A few tips to deal with FOMO: make a budget for planner supplies and stick to it (this will help you make better decisions when buying), before purchasing think how often you'll use the item (step away from the shiny objects), go through your stash and see what you already have (sometimes we forget what we already have), shop your stash, and one that helps me a lot is that I will only buy something if I sell another planner item first (something that I'm no longer using or don't see myself using again).

For me, a time out is essential. When I see a non-essential, “gotta have it” item in the store, I look at the price and carry it around the store for a bit while I continue browsing. I can usually talk myself down by reminding myself of the price and thinking of what else I have at home that serves the same purpose, and what else that money could be used for. If I go home and can’t stop thinking about that “gotta have it”, I often allow myself the purchase.
@nats61905 жыл бұрын
I like how you think regarding FOMO. I was able to break the cycle by creating a Pinterest board for “Things I Want”. Instead of buying, any wants get pinned into that board. Every few weeks, I check the board. If I’m still thinking about something on a regular basis, I’ll consider buying it. In most cases, though, the board helps me see how unimportant and fleeting most of my impulse buys would have been, if I had purchased them at the time that I pinned them. I purge that board every once in a while by moving pins to a “Things I Wanted” board, which is a pretty much a place I go to laugh and shake my head at myself.

In my shopping list app (Google keep) I have a fight club quote to make me not spend so much "We buy things we don’t need with money, we don’t have to impress people we don’t like” -Chuck Palahniuk. Also I have a small budget for planning stuff, and if things aren't in my budget I either have to give up something else or save up. So I'm not spending money I don't have.

I used to be a total victim of fomo. Especially with a certain thing, once I skipped a couple of “special releases” by not staying up till 1am it got so much easier to just say nah not for me. I go there a couple of days later and add to cart but I haven’t committed to buying. Removing that must buy at 1.01am pressure made such a difference.

With regards to the #FOMO thing, I have a couple of suggestions for people who don't want to fall prey to these selling techniques that seem to possess so many of us with their witchery ways. First of all, I'm really not that into wanting my planner to look just like everyone else's does right now. One thing that really pisses me off with sticker releases, is just how many sellers are selling basically the same artwork by about three different creators in their stores, which just creates a boring old glut of sameness. I don't have an EC because it doesn't do what I need it to do. I use a Scribbles That Matter notebook that I then create various pages for every month, one of which is a weekly 'Meds, Meals & Hydration Tracking' page designed using the EC vertical layout which I recreate by hand. (You can see examples of what I mean here on my Pinterest board: www.pinterest.com/BadGirlBexx/bullet-journaling-planners/my-bujo-spreads/ ) I make a monthly header page and a bunch of other pages like Habit Tracker/Gratitude Log/Sleep Tracker/Physical Symptoms & Mental Health Tracker etc and pick a theme which then runs through the month. Sometimes I might use a sticker kit or theme that is currently popular for one week, but I really like to go back through the older kits available to find something that works for me, looks cute and is a bit different to everyone else's spreads. Pro tip: older kits are often cheaper too, so you get to be a bit different whilst being a bit more thrifty! Secondly, there are some great creators out there who make FREE kits you can download every month to use in your planners. Two of the best examples of this are Victoria Thatcher and Pink Pixel Graphics, who make shop quality, beautiful, interesting and different kits that you can get for absolutely nothing. All you have to do is print them off onto sticker paper and away you go. The other thing I like to do is create sticker stuff myself. When I have a theme in mind, I go onto places like Pinterest where I keep a board dedicated exclusively called 'Stuff To Print Off For BuJo". I find a bunch of images I like and then arrange them onto an MS Paint document, then print them off on white A4 sticker paper. It allows me to be more inventive and find exactly what I want without having to fork out a fortune for them. I'm in the UK so a pack of sticker paper is about £10 for 100 sheets and that usually lasts me months and months. You just need to get creative and think about ways to make your planner more interesting and unique to your own sense of style. It took me a while to figure out my system, but now I have one it's perfect for me and I really enjoy the time I spend looking for stuff I can use to bring that system to life, artistically. #FOMO only really works when you want to be like everyone else in the room. I'm not about that. I like to be a bit different. I watch a few creators for inspiration, but I never feel like I need to emulate them. I'm me and they're them. Maybe it's something that comes with getting a bit older (I'm 39) but your planner is supposed to work FOR you. Yes you can want to put the work INTO it to get it the way you want, but if that's the case and you're interested in making your planner your own, why try to do what all the alleged 'cool kids' are doing? Screw that. I'm a grown up. I decide what's cool, what's interesting and what's worth paying for. #FOMO works by playing into your sense of self worth. It makes you take your own self esteem or lack thereof and tells you that you aren't good enough if you don't have/do 'X'. Don't let yourself be played that way. Just my two pence there Cindy. Sorry for the long waffle. Loved the video (loved the spread too!) Tl;dr YOU'RE YOUR OWN PERSON - YOU DON'T NEED TO BE LIKE EVERYONE ELSE - YOU DO YOU! lol.

I really love DIY'ing stuff myself, like I literally have a traveler's notebook in about every possible size to try out, and then I still have a ton of leather scraps left over as well as more elastic to make other things. I only just recently costed out and budgeted for getting started on a discbound set. I actually got the Erin Condren Knockoff..dupe? the Michael's planner one for about $15 or so when it was on sale, and I used it, it was alright, I just didn't love it, it was so large, just hauling it out to check regularly was a pain and then I like to have the option of bringing my planner with me for trips(probably why I keep coming back to like the 5x8 medium moleskine-type notebooks) and I really learned I like and use pretty heavily, my daily layouts. I currently use a bullet journal made from a cheap moleskine I think I paid like $2 for, it was in a discount store and someone had written on like two pages that I carefully used a boxcutter to excise, and bam, good as new. I Like having things cheap because then I don't feel bad about destroying them or using them to death, either. It makes a difference. So yeah in a month or two I'll probably switch to discbound, if only because I already have a laser printer so I can print out as many inserts as I could possibly want, and then with a punch I got for $30 and someone else's lightly used TUL cover and dividers, zipper pouch, etc, and especially for like, filofax and other systems, it really pays to buy used in good condition, you can save a lot of money and often inherit a lot of stuff they bought and either never used or lightly used things.

@@Nenona1200 It took a while of me mucking about with layouts and notebooks and Filofaxes and my TN until I worked out a system that I could really use and benefit from. I've also found helpful to recognize that something I see on the internet is pretty, beautiful, even gorgeous - but I can appreciate that without "needing" to buy it, because there are ZILLION things that are equally beautiful out there. I also use that rule of "wait a few days etc. to see if you really want it". Of course if the item is something that I don't have already (for instance, if I don't have a similar washi tape), simply recognizing its beauty is difficult, but usually I manage to not to buy it just because it's pretty - and I think that "I need to have that, it's SO pretty!" mentality is the main reason people buy so much stuff. I use a bullet journal partly because it helps me keep my planner-envy in check: people are really into Hobonichi Weeks at the moment, but I can always make that layout in my bullet journal without spending any money. Washi tapes are something I could buy truckloads, so I've made a rule for myself, one which I apply to all stationary stuff: if I already have that colour, I don't buy it, or if the pattern is very similar to something I already have, I don't buy it - so that I don't end up with 10 pink floral washi tapes. I can have a few florals in different colours or a few different shades of red, but never the exact same colour etc. and not too many shades of the main colour, either (for instance, not too many shades of that red). With arts and crafts, I've also made a shopping list so that I don't buy all the floral stencils or all the woodland stamps, even though I like those themes. I highly recommend making theme-based shopping lists!

First of all, loving this! Started watching you for the planning but feel I get so much more, you are sharing awesome little nuggets of thoughts, a perfect way to start my day! When it comes to fomo, I think I already been there, my first entry into internet spending world was 2004 and cross stitching. And even tho I had much less money then, I did spend more on kits that I never will do than I want to acknowledge. I’ve learned through the years that even if you don’t buy you will never miss out. Because when you finally have time to use what you bought, then maybe you don’t like it anymore. I try to be limited in what I buy, it’s not the easiest thing to do, having a craft channel that I try to treat somewhat like a business, I still need to be restricted in what I buy, I only have so much space and time. For anyone that have fomo issues I would recommend to go back a couple of months, look at what you bought, is these things something you will use? Did you buy them because they fit in your life or because everyone else got them? And then next time you get fomo, take a deep breath and try to picture multiple ways you can use the product if you can’t then maybe you don’t need it :)

I combat FOMO with several methods. First, by imagining, in excruciating detail, having to store, organize, and keep all of that junk clean. Then I let myself feel the guilt of having all that junk and not actually using it all (because let's face it... you probably won't). My third tactic is space restriction. I have ONE dresser drawer which holds my art supplies and stationary, and it is full. If something comes in, then I need to get rid of something else that I paid good money for and loved in the moment just as much as this new thing. Fourth, I remind myself that it is STUFF. There is no real "missing out" on stuff... only experiences. Fifth, I put that cost in terms of something more important... $20 sticker book? That's two hours of your life, GONE, to make that money (or whatever your income works out to). Is that sticker worth that much of your life. $20? That's movie night with hubs. Is that sticker bookhave he same worth to you as that time spent with a loved one? Etc.

I think of all the more important things I could buy with my money, especially with food. I aim to spend about $50 a week on food, so it would cost me about one week of food to buy an Erin Condren planner at full price. Yeah...that's gonna be a no from me. I try to look for cheaper options, and there are many times where I just walk away and go occupy myself with something else. I will spend weeks thinking about if I really need something before I actually buy it. I did recently buy some Krissyanne Designs stickers from Michaels. I thought they were half off, but they rang up full price when I got to the register. Oh, well. Now I can experiment with stickers. I have a tough time spending money in general, though, so that works in my favor.

It's a set amount each person in our family gets paid from our budget and we get to spend it on anything we want. So when I see something I want, like that Simply Gilded Sub box that I now 'need,' I can just buy it. As long as I stay within my budget I am fine. Before we had this system I found that restricting myself so much made me want more items and I actually spent more than I do now. The "freedom" of buying whatever I want has made me spend less. Might not work for everyone but it certainly was the ticket for me.

So...now that I know what it is, I love sites that have Wish Lists. I add it to the Wish List and leave it there for a while. I check back on it every few days and then see how I feel about it. I can't really think of anything that sold out before I got it that would have changed my life in a bad way. If I don't get it, I look for other things that please me...and there are always some of those. :)

100% agree with this! I love Amazon for this. I have created a bunch of separate wish lists on there for books/stationery/handbags/clothes etc and do just what you said. Stick it in the wish list and come back later. Only very rarely do I need to have something immediately. I go back into the wishlists every so often and cull a lot of stuff from them. I also keep a lot of things in there for future times when I know I might want/need it and will appreciate having put it somewhere I can find it at a later date. Sometimes I laugh at the things I thought I wanted at the time. Fads pass. Also, being a chick, certain times of the month can make one more susceptible to emotional purchases, so using the wishlist feature is a great way to moderate myself.

I took the autofill off my phone and computer so I have to pull my CC out and manually enter in the number when making a purchase online (except when stores accept Apple Pay or PayPal, sigh) I also have a post it with my big financial goals in my wallet and on my laptop and look at them when I’m about to make a purchase, and ask myself if the item I’m about to buy will be worth putting less toward debt or savings this month. Honestly though, for as much of a shopaholic as I used to be, I’m getting way better at not shopping at all lately. I’m already living in an expensive city with a tight budget, so I’ve been sticking to essentials mostly out of necessity.

I don't really have the Etsy shop experience due to lack of funds. As for the stickers I buy random places, I have got to be doing a no spend on extra stuff until further notice do to a death in the fam. I find that not I am utilizing what's in my collection instead of hoarding. I'd love all the HP sticker books that came out recently, I just can't have them for the moment.

I check the price. Is it on sale? How long is it on sale for? What other necessities (for home/kids) could I purchase instead of this thing I WANT but dont need? I usually want more than 2 things so.. if I buy the cheaper of the two now.. I will have to wait to save even longer for the more expensive item. Most of the time I will leave without the item I'm lusting after... i think I do ok living vicariously through Cindys' videos 😂😂 OMG her declutter videos 😍😍

If the thing I want isn't on sale I usually don't get it. If it is on sale then I struggle to stick to my "planner stuff" monthly budget. For example; Good Morning America had a Tombow 1/2 price deal last week & I bought all 3 packs of the TwinTone markers. 🤦♀️ I try to be strict with my budget but dip into other nonessential categories occasionally when a great deal comes along.

I am going to Canada this year and I really need to save up some money for it. So I started unsubbing all the channels/persons that promote stuff I really like but don't want to buy right now. I've deleted Amazon and other shopping apps from my phone and changed my search engine from Google to ecosia so I don't get any ads based on my Google searches. I just slowly try to step away from all the offers on the internet and for now it's working. :)

I personally don't think I suffer from FOMO when it comes to buying things. I have never in my life owned washi tape, because it's expensive. And once I saw how expensive it was, I was like "well, okay, no washi", and moved on. When it comes to things, it's okay for me, I don't mind using a cheap notebook. For my birthday and for christmas I do get myself one or two things as a treat (and it happens to be every six months pretty much, so it works), but in general, I feel more FOMO with experiences. And the problem is, they are a lot more difficult for me to get... For example, going to a music festival, or going to an art gallery, or traveling, stuff like that. And, while I know it is a stupid idea, I feel like I can't do any of that on my own. I really want to do them, but both money and being alone doesn't help for me to experience all those things.

I could not work for myself. I am an excellent, hard worker and I thrive at work. However, being accountable only to myself would definitely not work. I suffer from depression and when I am on my own time at home, I tend to sleep the day away. I am willing to bet that I am the only person who does not look forward to holidays and days off. If I make plans with someone I WILL BE THERE. It is basically the only way I can get myself out of the house. I work from home three days a week. It works for me, but only because I am accountable to my job. I don't know how you do it, especially having a chronic illness. Many people my age are looking forward to retirement. Not me. The two days a week I have to go into the City are a necessary evil for me, as I also suffer from mild agoraphobia. Without these two mandatory outings, I could very well see myself not going out at all. I do not see me retiring when the time comes and this is fine with me. As far as the FOMO. I'm getting better at resisting the urge to splurge. I do what you suggested.....give it time. If I can forget about, then I did not need it. It works. Thank you for another great video and topic.

At the beginning of this year, I went through and organized my entire sticker collection. It made me realize just how much I *already* had. It was very clear that I could do with no spending for a full year, if not longer! I was a bit annoyed with myself when I saw the latest new Happy Planner releases but I still hadn't really used the several books I already own and really like! I'm on a year long no spend and so far, so good! I've bought 1 pen since January 1st (although it's most likely mid-December). :) The easiest way to fight buying stuff is putting all your planner stuff in one place and go through it. You'll be surprised how much you forgot you had and how much of it can last you for a long while. If anyone wants to join in, I'm using the #craftwithyourstash tag on IG. :D

I write a list and put a date if when I first saw it, if I keep looking at it over and over and over again and I really want it, after say a month or so I buy it. Saying that it took me almost a year to buy something of this list and converted that more than anything else on that list lol. I try and keep all my stuff together so I can look at it and think, I don't really need that do i? cos i have X Y & Z. I try and also watch KZbinrs which use what they already have or recycle/upcycle things which can be really cool =) xXx

Jellekee She mentioned it in either the first plan as you go for April or the set up for April PAYG! It’s some sort of palette something-or-other since she has a hard time grasping a card. Hope that helps a bit!

You're talking to a woman who puts on her Guerlain or Chanel perfume to clean out the cat litter tray. I'm not sure if that means I'm more or less susceptible to promotional stuff, but my approach to #lifestyle leaves a lot to be desired compared to these online influencers. " Oh, hi Mark!"

@@CindyGuentertBaldo Because you're worth it. And why the frick not! No point buying all those nice cosmetics if they go out of date and gross, just waiting for you to save them for "a special" or "worthwhile" occasion. Eff that. Mirrors are a thing and even if the only person who sees the effort you've made is you, it was worth the effort if you yourself appreciate it. And that cat of course. Do it for the cats, lol. x

***Question!*** (is this what you meant when you wanted us to let you know we have a question for the next video? 😅) I hope you don't mind the personal question ... you mention your ex/the father of your children quite a bit, mostly in regards to custody. Do you and him have a good relationship? Were things awkward when he started dating again/you started dating and married Jesse? My ex boyfriend had a young son, and he forced his ex/baby mama and me to hate one another. Ever since he and I broke up though, she and I have become the best of friends. Just curious about how you you first dealt with the relationship issues with children involved! :) As always, love the video! Also, your nails look awesome and your ring is fucking beautiful. Good job, Jesse! 😆
