In this lecture, I have discussed briefly how to decide the position and orientation of columns in a building structure which is going to be an add-on to your civil engineering basic knowledge.

After framing an architectural plan of a building, structural planning is done by deciding the Position and orientation of columns followed by positioning of beams, spanning of slabs, the layout of stairs and finally selecting the proper type of footing. Overall, the basic principle of deciding the layout of these components is the transfer of loads from the superstructure to the foundation along the shortest possible path.
The columns should be oriented in a way that the depth (i.e. shorter side) of the column is perpendicular to the major axis of bending. In simple words, when a column is connected to beams, it is subjected to moments in addition to the axial load. That’s why the shorter side of the column should be aligned perpendicular to the major axis of bending. This way, we can get a larger moment of inertia which means a greater moment-resisting capacity.

Simple concept...align the column along long wall...at intersection cancel out opposite length then consider it...we always increase depth instead of width because in column and beam with depth moment of inertia and section modulus both increases which decreases the bending stress in our structure...bending stress is M/Z so Z increases ratio decreases...Z= bd²/6 for rectangle shape...also Z = I/Y ...so more inertia more section modulus..more strength to structure...everything is interconnected. 👷

Hi sir, what if there is a beam (larger dimension) and other beam(smaller dimension)? it is still used the same way to determine it or the larger beam is always connected to the short side of the column

Here our beams are mostly 425x150 with the top of the beam being the thickness of the slab (125 mm.) The web part of the beam (height=300) is cast first to enable shuttering for the slab and the top part of the beam is cast together with the slab (=125mm). The slab is connected to the beam by its weight and by its reinforcement but they do not share a unified concrete cast. I will like to know how you consider the beam dimension in that case according to your code? Thanks.
