Have you ever been asked "Who are you?", answered with your name and then realised that a name is just a name and doesn't really define who you really are?
As a cultural graduate, traveller and bilingual creator identity is a topic that has always been incredibly important to me. I prefer the question "who are you?" over "Where are you from?" because it goes so much deeper and avoids prejudice based on your country of origin, mother tongue or skin colour.
The tiny community (called family) we grow up with in most cases has a major impact the first years of our life. Family can -but doesn't have to - become part of who you are. However, every single one of you is their very own person and it is our choice alone who we decide to be our community, and were we find our tribe of people.

I don’t know who or what I am! The culture and history of my country and the experiences I have had shaped me, as these change so do I . Where am I going? I don’t know that either, I will find out when I get there. I go with the flow. What I do know is that I want to be a better person, a. better husband, father, grandfather, or friend, a kinder, gentler more understanding man and a better photographer. I will judge no one but myself. Your video did make me reflect and think, thank you.

Bringing up some basic questions - nice to think about it! Feeling common and comfortable with you in looking for the origin and in expanding.

Wow, deep yet short and to the point, loved it Nellie. I'm the result of my experiences so far, and I'm not near close to the end result of my self, forever growing and changing with each human interaction and life experience. Cheers 😁

30 years in the fire service taught me the value of teamwork and belonging. Every day I put on my uniform it gave me a sense of belonging and pride. It also created a sense of trust as it was about ensuring no harm came to each other when in a dangerous situation. A very interesting topic and discussion Nellie 👍

That makes so much sense! Glad you were able to experience that kind of feeling, it feels amazing when we find our tribe. And what's even more beautiful is the fact that we can become a part of different tribes throughout our lives :) Thanks for sharing!

"Where are you from?" is by far the best question you can ask a traveler you haven't met yet! The question is so simple and at the same time so deep.

Hello Nellie, I love your videos because they have depth which is rather unusual and rare nowadays. The subject of identity is a fascinating one. What we do for a living is just a role we play. It might reflect who we are; however, it does not define who we are. I also believe that our identity changes and evolves overtime, depending on the experiences we go through in life. As for friends who might judge because our diet is different from theirs, we have to ask ourselves if they are real friends and if we want to keep them in our lives. Part of being a good friend is to accept the difference.🙂😷☀️

Thank you for the kind words Danielle! You are 100% right, our identity changes as we grow older and go through the different stages of our life. We become part of different communities and through them learn more about ourselves. And you're right, a good friend accepts you the way you are, but sometimes what we need is more than acceptance, it's being truly understood. My family and friends here in Germany totally support and accept my lifestyle, but do they really understand it...? I don't think so. Which is not something I would ever blame them for and it's totally okay, because I have other (travel) friends who DO understand. Hope that makes sense.

Yes, we also need to be understood and in an ideal world, we would be. Unfortunately we don’t live in one and being understood is not always part of the package. We need to accept it. I am not sure that our families can truly ever understand us, especially if our lifestyle is very different from theirs. I think that, as we grow older and more mature, we don’t need other people’s understanding or even acceptance as much, but we always need to be loved. Take care Nellie.

A deep subject but those initial meetings and behaviour determine who you are in the eyes of the other person, first impressions do count or do they

I really enjoyed hearing about this topic! I totally agree that identifying oneself is more than just a name. For example, I could tell someone, "Hi, I'm Scott," but I feel that does not tell my whole story. I would respond by saying that I am a traveler from the state of Michigan in the United States whom enjoys discovering new places, meeting new people, learning about new cultures, and trying new foods. With that being my biggest passions in life (more than even my full time job I have right now), that is how I would define myself.

I agree Scott, that sounds perfectly like you!! Our greatest passions usually define a big part of who we are :)

I believe we are an amalgamation of thoughts, concepts, and ideas which we broadcast into the world and the world reflects back to us. I also believe in the saying "When you label me you negate me". That being said allow me to introduce myself. My name is David. I live in California and have been watching you and Greg for quite awhile now. A self proclaimed photographer I started KZbin a bit ago, all to keep me from getting a real job. Just kidding...not kidding. I'm happiest when I can sit and ponder the nature of reality and our existence as human beings. When I'm out on the trail, alone and find something beautiful I want to capture the moment because it's when I feel the most connected to existence. I appreciate the way your videos are going and i hope you don't mind the long winded comments. No one I know cares to converse about such topics so I took a chance to belong. 🥂

Hi, Nellie! At 66, I'm finally doing what I wanted to do when I grew up. I live in New York City and photograph nature wherever I can, either locally or while travelling. Two weeks ago I launched my own KZbin channel! So far, so good in a short time; I'd love you to check it out and I'd appreciate any feedback. I've been following you, Greg, and BvS (among others) around the world through your videos for several years, and you've all inspired me to try video myself. Better late than never! My timing regarding expanded travel couldn't be worse (smh), but this too shall eventually pass. I look forward to your content, and maybe our paths will cross one day.
