Can you Degas Wine or Mead with a Vacu Vin Winesaver? Though not intended for this purpose, it's been told to us over and over we should try it. The Vacu Vin Winesaver is meant to remove air from the bottle and seal it up so wine doesn't spoil. But we're going to try removing the CO2 from our brew and see how it does. Can you really degas a wine or mead with a vacu vin winesaver?

Learned a valuable lesson yesterday. Don't add sugar to a brew before you degas! It was an explosion of froth and wine! I lost about a quarter of my brew all over the table, floor, and other things I had around. Lesson learned!!!!

Can mix it with a cup of the mead itself out side the main container. You just have to get any powder you want to put in wet before you put it in to keep it from foaming up. Sugar is unique in it takes very little to dissolve it if you apply heat so dilution can be mitigated in more than one way... it is better to lose.001 gravity point for adding a tiny bit of water than half the brew due to foaming

I wonder if one of those hand vacuum sealers would do the same thing so you don’t have to pump and it can degas from a smaller hole. I might try it just to see. I use mine quite a bit to get air out and vacuum seal some of my extracts.

Hey, great suggestion. A piece of advice that I learned the hard way... I was using this in a small mouth carboy with the airlock bung on. It made such a large vacuum that the bung got sucked in without notice (the widest part of the bung was significantly wider that the mouth of the carboy). I had no spare bungs or carboys so I had to bottle that day even though I wasn't planning to do it yet (fortunately it was ready to bottle, just a bit cloudy). Lesson: either fit the vacuvin stoppers directly on the carboy or if you're using the bung make sure you don't pump further when you hear the click and wait a while before pumping again... Also keep an emergency bung and carboy handy I guess!

Hey guys! My brother and I are going to start our first mead soon, so I will definitely pull out my old vacu vin (that I never use anymore). Just wanted to also let you know, you don't have to pull the stopper out of the bottles to break the seal-if you press the little 'nub' at the center of the top of the stopper towards the side it will release the vacuum (at least it does on my old ones). Love ALL the videos, thanks!

Try this. Use a 1.5 to 2” piece of 5/16 racking tubing inserted through the top of the 1 gallon fermenter wide mouth lid. Then (after everything is sanitized of course) slip the piece of tubing in place of the airlock. Now sit the wine lock piece on top of the tubing and pull the vacuum. The tubing piece will pull down into the jar. Don’t have to worry about losing vacuum. I use this regularly since this video. Just a new and improved method. Just cut the piece of tubing as level as possible, but I’ve found out if it’s close it works. Robert

Never even thought of this as I've been doing this with a vacuum sealer that came with a like pump for bags and I've been using it with a bung to pull all the CO2 out of suspension when doing wine. I just made a lot of sense to me to naturally use this and happy you all covered it as it does work really well and really easily. Funny someone would take a current invention and apply it as a new one for a new purpose, just never thought I was doing anything special.

I haven't read all the comments but I accidentally found an expansion on this technique on my own. Btw, I had this gadget at home but it didn't occur to me I could use it, so thanks CSB for giving me the idea! 🙂 Nevertheless, I was pumping out the gas to make vacuum and indeed, I got nice bubbles, just like you. Then I repeated, of course, wanted to keep the vacuumlike environment as effective as possible, and as I was pumping vigorously, I managed to lift one side of the fermenter and then smash it back against the table - boy, I got EXPLOSIONS of bubbles! So then I remembered those funny videos where people hit the bottle of american beer on the side and it foams out - I pumped out as much as possible and then started to hit the side of the fermenter with the pump. THAT WAS SOME BUBBLES. I mean, what you get by pumping is like 10% of what you get using this method. Of course, it's risky, because of the glass. This wants me to get some plastic bottle and "beat the bejeezus out of it"! 😀

Well, absolute degassing isn't crucial for a good brew. Just a little helps 👍
@mmiYTB
@mmiYTB Ай бұрын
@@CitySteadingBrews I'm not aiming for absolute, but some happy middle ground. Try it yourself, carefully! 🙂 One way or another, this method of degassing is great for a big headspace in secondary IMO, because a lot of CO2 gets drawn over the surface and protects the brew. I got a wee bit more lucky than you in this case, because the sealant plugs from my pump fit my airlock holder and keep the fermenter underpressurized even after I remove the pump.
@CitySteadingBrews
@CitySteadingBrews Ай бұрын
Degassing is lessening the co2 that can protect the brew... in other words, leave it to degas naturally if you are worried about too much headspace. The brew is letting off the heavier co2 constantly so that should help against oxidation. Removing most of the co2 at once just means if that bit on top is disturbed, oxygen can get to the brew.
@mmiYTB

@@CitySteadingBrews I am talking to a chemical engineer in parallel (that type of guy who can't recall the name "Aspirin" but will give you the complete acetylsalicide acid active-compound name 🙂) and he's also saying the CO2 works as a natural conservant of sorts, so I guess, with such agreement on the topic, I won't be doing that much of the degassing after all. It's as if I just heard happy glass jars noises. 😀

If I remember my high school chemistry correctly, you’re very wise to degas a brew that’s going to be carbonated. Gases in solution fight each other for “space” in the liquid. If you try to carbonate a brew with CO2, SO4, and other gasses already in solution, you won’t get much more CO2 into it.

That said, I've had some ideas for brews but am clueless on how to pull it off, that's on top of honeysuckle mead I'm thinking of. The first is a blackberry and blueberry wine from bottled juice. The next 2 are similar. One would be like a spiced cranberry orange wine then a Russian tea wine, possibly with a shot of cranberry juice, for Thanksgiving or Christmas. I'm just not sure how to pull it off or how to add nutmeg, since I think that might come in handy.

Anybody able to confirm this? Otherwise, grat method for degassing and exercising! :P PS: I had to improvise a stopper as you comment at the end of the vid- I recommend sacrificing one mouthpiece and use silicone to make it a permanent degasser for that very carboy. Nope. Not concerned at all. The tiny amount of surface area means nothing and... there’s still co2 in there.

Didn't know where to ask this...did you remove the hibiscus blueberry mead video? I wanted to tell you how mine turned out but I can't find the video. I made 2 batches in September, and today I brought a bottle from my first batch to my air bnb honey bee experience that I host for the group to try and they liked it very much. I wonder if mine turned out because of the blueberries I used? I made another batch a few weeks later and that one tastes almost the same as the first. I got organic dried unsweetened oil free by Brownwood Acres sold on Amazon. I also added Just Blueberry juice by Knudsen, to fill up headspace when I racked to second gallon.

A possibly interesting question - after doing a fair bit of research on degassing, it appears there is a large part of the community who are against a vacu vin / vacuum degassing as they claim it removes desirable volatiles and significantly changes the flavor of a brew vs drill / stirring / time. I know you rely generally on time to do this, though wondering if you’ve ever noticed a difference?

Have you ever taken hard candy like butterscotch or peppermint and turned it into a wine? I had seen a few years ago where a company had taken old candy in turned it into alcohol. sure the alcohol was distilled for use in cars. If you have done one already please give me the link so I can watch. Thank you

The gasses built up in a brew can slow and possibly even stall fermentation in some cases, they don’t taste good, and it can prevent bottles from exploding.

I wonder if this also degases some of the less wanted gases, or if that is dissolved/mixed too well. I've noticed that a few of my last brews (a mead and a cider) would have that rotten egg smell (the net suggests starving yeast and patience- although I have used nutrition tablets on the mead). It's going to age a while before I'm going to try it.
