I just purchased a 1980 Seiko that was running +96 MINUTES a day(+4 minutes an hour!!!). Seller offered to pay for shipping to return it, but instead I bought a $20 demagnetizer, followed the above instructions, and now it's running as it should. I get to keep the watch I love and the seller doesn't have the headache of dealing with a watch that most would deem unwearable. Thank you!!

Sounds like your 1980 Seiko was trying to catch up to 2024 (as I write this). Wearing that watch, you spend your whole day saying, "Whaaat, is it that time already?!"

The little transformer housed in the plastic case is used to magnetize or demagnetize a watch. The idea is, you want to create chaos in the molecular field of the magnetized watch, or scramble the molecular structure. If you simply leave the watch on the top and press the button for 10 seconds without moving the watch, you will align the molecules up and create a magnetized watch, if you push the button while holding the watch about a half inch above and slowly move the watch around to crown up to crown down to crown side to side, it will scramble the field and demagnetize the watch. I am guessing slowly moving the watch up will eventually do the same thing. Also, since it's the balance spring your demagnetizing its best to stop the movement (Hack it) Good informative video for anyone with an automatic/mechanical watch, as these little 20 dollar magnetizer/demagnetizers are a must-have.

Great video, however here are some corrections: - You should move the watch away from the demagnetizer slowly to get the best demagnetization. You can also do it with the watch in several different directions to get all the spots in the watch. However it is only the demagnetization of the hair-spring that is important., and it might be difficult to do this with the back still on the watch, especially if the watch has a magnetic shielded back. - The phone does no contain a magnet, it contains a magnetometer (used to measure compass direction). Hence any app that can show the compass direction or even better, the strength of the magnetic field, can help you. The app mentioned in the video seems to only show yes or no which is not so helpful as the actual measured value.

@Richard.Andersson

@@Chrono24Official For Android I like the app "GPS Status". It is mainly used to show detailed GPS info, but in the menu you can go to the option: "Diagnose sensors". There it shows you a list of all sensors on the phone, including the magnetometer in X,Y, and Z direction. I recommend to use the raw-uncalibrated value from the sensor. It also has a "calibrated" value, but this is deceiving as this tries to eliminate all external fields in order to calculate compass direction, hence not recommended for actual measurements of external fields.

Using a magnetic field sensor to diagnose a magnetized watch (as you said what these apps actually do) is something that I can understand. But I really struggle to accept what some people on internet say about using a compass for diagnosing a magnetized watch. The compass hand is nothing but a magnet. So, even if you take a piece of not magnetized iron close to it, its hand will still move. So, I don't think that test can be correct. Do you agree with me, or you think that I am missing something here?

@@a000ab A compass will show movement if a metal object is placed near it. A compass that shows a slight, tiny movement when a watch is moved close to it, indicates that a watch is not magnetised. A compass that shows a lot of movement when a watch is moved close to it, indicates that the watch is possibly magnetised. A compass should only be used as an indicator to help diagnose if a watch is magnetised or not, it should not be used as 100% definitive proof. I use a compass and I also use the Lepsi app, which is easy to calibrate, easy to use, and best of all it is free. Something to keep in mind is that watch bracelet clasps, spring bars, watch buckles, etc, can also be a source of magnetism and cause a watch to become magnetised. I only recently became aware of this from watching a video called “How To Avoid Magnetisation In Your Watch Collection” by “Peter Kotsa” it is about magnetised watches, bracelets, spring bars etc,and how to check for and demagnetise them. Edit: The cheap watch repair kits that are sold on Amazon, eBay and AliExpress can also be sources of magnetism. I recently checked my watch repair kit and found the majority of the tools including the screwdrivers and watch case back opener were magnetised. I know it is obvious to most people, but for anyone that doesn’t know, never leave your watches or tools anywhere near your sound bar, speakers, subwoofers and obviously anything else that has magnets in them.

You can always use a compass to detect magnetised watches, either a real one or one that you can install on your smartphone. A 1° change in the presence of your watch is normal, but if introducing the watch causes the compass to swing more it needs demagnetisation.

I have a Tudor that was running very fast so I found one of these demagnetizers on Amazon. It took several times to get my watch to slow down. Several times with me keep the watch on the pad for a minute or two and there is still a trace of magnetism. I don’t know if my watch was just heavily magnetized or my demag device is weak. But it did work eventually kinda.

Thanks for the video. I have a Breitling Superocean Heritage ii that I felt it may of got magnetized while moving as I carried a pair of speakers. The watch was running well and then gaining time and then it just stopped. I downloaded the Lepsi app and confirmed that watch was magnetized. I checked it a 2nd time and noticed the second hand moving again. Now it's been an hour and still running spot on. I just ordered the blue demagnetizer anyway but weird how the watch just started working. Could that 2nd pass over the iPhone have corrected the problem as it did not read magnetized the 2nd time. Well my watch is working again. Thanks

There's magnetism all around you especially from electronic devices. If you have a sound system or any type of speaker there is a very very strong magnetic field around those devices, far more than there would be from that demagnetiser. I've never heard of a magnetic field being harmful in any way. The earth has a magnetic field which is how compasses work. You're probably getting confused with radiation from x-rays extra which would be harmful over time but as far as I know a magnetic field only effects metallic objects not an actual person. Hope that helps explain it.

Hi I bought that demagnetiser about a year ago and never used it. One of my mechanical watches then started to lose time so I placed it on the demagnetiser and the time keeping went off the scale. I tried it first with the watch face down and it started losing minutes a day. I then tried it face up and the watch started gaining minutes a day!!! I think I was leaving it on the demagnetiser too long and then suddenly removing it. Either way it messed up the watch big time. I then saw your video and tried it face up for 10 seconds only and removed it slowly upwards. The watch has now returned to good time keeping but I don't understand why the demagnetiser ruined the time keeping previously. Does this thing do harm to a watch if you leave it on the demagnetiser for too long, and what's the correct way the watch should be, face up or face down when demagnetising? That Lepsi app is iPhone only but I found similar apps in the Google Play Store.
@Chrono24Official
@Chrono24Official 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, thank you for your questions. Well, I don't have all the answer to you but this is what I know. The watch should be placed on the demagnetiser face up. You then push the button. While you are pushing the button with one hand after counting to 10 firmly lift the watch upwards and when about 30-40cm above the device let the button go. I only ever used the Lepsi App on iPhone so not sure if there is a Google Play version, but I think there might be apps for Android as well by other companies. Hope this helps!
@deepseagaming5386

Hello Mike, the demagnetizer relies on an alternating current electromagnet, this means it is switching the magnetic field from one way to another very quickly. If you leave the watch in place on it it just ends up being magnetised one way or another. To efectively scramble the aligned magnetic fields of the watch and thus demagnetise it, you have to slowly pull away so that the switching magnetic fields slowly taper off and "scramble" the magnetism. If the magnetism is scrambled, all the tiny bits fighting each other cancel out, resulting in no net magnetism.

This demagnetizer works by putting changing magnetic fields through everything. You have to hold it close, then slowly pull it away, so the magnetic fields in the watch steel don't disappear, but slowly taper to a net zero. Not polarized and not big.

Do not rely on a compass or phone app to indicate that your watch is magnetized. I've had two watches suddenly run unusually fast and neither moved the needle on a compass. But, both returned to their normal accuracy after several passes over the demagnetizer. Sudden inaccuracy is more of an indicator than an app or compass.

Going fast is usually magnetism, going slow is need of service. You could regulate it so it advances a bit but that would last you a long while but it will slow again needing further regulation. You can get away with this until you get to the end of the little +- gauge on the balance cock, any further advancement will likely damage your watch needing a more expensive repair. If you get to the end of the gauge it really is service time as your watch is indicating it is tired, it is dirty, it is dry and beginning to gum up from dried oil particles, small worn metal particles and of course the ol' favourite... mangunge, yes our skin, sweat and other doings get into even the best sealed watches.

I tried this app. I’ve done its configuration putting my AirPods Pro inside the case (it has magnets inside to keep the headphones inside to make them don’t fall off opening the case upside down for error). The app has counted 1400 circa of magnetism when I’ve put my AirPods Pro with case near my iPhone 11. The position of the sensor was the same as yours. When I’ve putted my mechanical watches near my iPhone the app always said “NO MAGNETISM”. After all my watches tests I’ve put again my AirPods Pro with case near and said “MAGNETISM DETECTED”. So my mechanical watches are not magnetised, right? Can I rest calm and assured that all of my watches didn’t make “MAGNETISM DETECTED”, so they’re not magnetised? When I’ve put my AirPods Pro near has said “MAGNETISM DETECTED”. Thanks dude💪🏻💪🏻

But doesn’t putting your watch close to your phone also magnetize it?
@Chrono24Official
@Chrono24Official 4 жыл бұрын
Legit question. As the magnet in your phone is pretty small/weak and you do not touch the phone with your watch, it will not magnetize it. That's how I would explain it. That is why it says in the app "Don't touch the phone". However I could not find an official explanation in the app why it does not get magnetized. But most importantly is that the demagnetizer works fine. Best, Pascal

Your phone does not have a magnet but it does have an accelerometer that can detect a magnet movement or use a compass to detect magnetism on your watch.

@@zepp3lin iphone 12 have a bunch of magnets on the back for the wireless charging, also the speaker in the phone has a magnet, and those are pretty powerful.

I don't know what to think about this. All my watches are magnitized but only one is off track. The rest are very precise. I tried to demagnetize the faulty one but nothing happens. It is still off track like -10 minutes in one hour

It's a very terrifying procedure until it actually works. I got a watch with ETA movement and it's running +20s a day. When I first try the demagnetizer it magnetize it even more, the watch is running +150s! Until I do it the right way, the watch now run +2s, I'm happy with the result.

I brought my watch close to a compass and it didn’t move. I brought it close to the app and it said it was magnetized. I thought a compass would be more accurate? No?

What?? The iPhone has a magnet inside?? You clearly don't know what you are talking about. The iPhone has a magnetometer sensor, which is very different. It's normally an integrated circuit that measures a magnetic field by the current it induces on an electrical conductor or coil. This is called the Hall effect.

Video interessante. Ottimo 👍

So, I've watched every video on KZbin about demagnetizing a watch. Downloaded the app from Lepsi, set it up with a magnet and the location was the same as on your phone. I then checked two of my mechanical watches and both showed magnetism. After following the procedure as you and every other video detailed, both watches still showed magnetism. Now what?

@JP JP Mate, gonna call this out, its impossible to rip out a hand if you have the caseback face to the blue brick, also most hands are made from brass not steel unless it is a very cheap watch. The blue bricks do not have enough "magnetism" (rather the opposite) to start tearing hands off, even a high power neodymium magnet unlikely to rip a hand off and the blue bricks are intentionally low yield because if they were full welly you would be killng ipad's off from the next room. It may well be you ended up with the ONLY nuclear power level blue brick, made not with an oscillating magnetic source but a small cube of kryptonite whose powers held in stasis by the huge red box attached to it to power the morphic field that stops the blue brick from erasing humanity...

no, if the watch does not touch the screen. You need to move the watch close to the screen but not touching it.
