Fire shelters save you from radiant heat, so direct heat would burn it. It all depends on where you deploy. If you deploy a shelter in grass, or brush. You probably wont make it. If you deploy in a bare spot, or create your own spot free of fuel you'll still get hot, probably even some foot burns if you deployed the correct way. But you'll probably live so long as flames aren't smacking your shelter. This is as good as shelters will get for a while. We all know the risks, all we can do is train and learn.

@robwall44226 жыл бұрын
Indeed :( The shelters are rated for sustaining durability in heat reaching 500 degrees (akin to a rolling grass fire) but they got trapped in a flash zone and (as A-a-ron said) the heat there sustained itself at over 1,000 degrees. Very sad times.

That’s why I always carry a pistol. If facing a total entrapment by fire that’s known to be popping trees (indication that its way beyond fire shelter rating) then I’ll be dead before the fire gets to me, and I’m ok with that.

and this is the best we can come up with in the 21st century.... see why they're nicknamed 'baked potato bags?
@dylanjohnson70914 жыл бұрын
Well you cant do much more because of weight and carrying it around and the real ones are made of foil like the fire retardant suits you see and they are acatully quite effective considering, only 40 some odd people have died in thousands of deployments, if they could carry more protective shelters they would but it wouldn’t be very practical and might even cause more harm if they can’t evacuate fast enough if they are carrying more weight
@94XJ4 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of advancements in materials that continue making these better while still small and light enough to fit in a backpack. The technology is impressive that a pound of material is enough to provide a life-saving barrier against a wildfire. The nickname comes from the aluminum foil look of the real ones which very much resembles how you would wrap a potato... but unlike pure aluminum foil, these insulate instead of transfer heat.

need a "moving shelter" that can be put on as one runs from a fire to act as a heat shield - a second shelter that is a static shelter like in the video.
@kilo56594 жыл бұрын
It's not really about the heat on your skin, it's mostly about the hot gases your breath in. Fire shelters allow you to create a basic seal, preventing the spread of said substances, and access to relatively cool ground to breath through. "Shelter suits" were experimented with when the first fire shelter (the tent) iteration was developed.
@STARDRIVE3 жыл бұрын
A reflective suit with F1 underwear makes sense, since the time of exposure is limited when running (although upright). For oxygen a small cannister (airplane?) will do, providing cool & clean air for your mask/helmet. At that point, I´m thinking dirt bike. Not cheap, but neither are shelters. They can get you out of harms way, carry stuff and work faster. There are many documented trails that can be used for burning. The terrifying thing about those ¨hot pockets¨ is you have to choose between running and digging in, hoping for the best. Although I am impressed by them. I found that ¨fire bikes¨ are used down under, even for wildfires. They need to be adapted for those circumstances, but on the positive, you need less fire fighters (or should I say Ghost Riders ;) for the same job.

About 500 degrees. Shouldn’t have much direct contact with flame. If a fire is hot enough to cause the moisture inside of trees to flash boil and cause the tree to pop like popcorn then you know it’s too hot. Just run! The shelter cant take that heat. If you’re facing total entrapment in that kind of fire then simply commit suicide. I always carry a pistol for that reason.

Our fire environments must be very different. I can't imagine anywhere in the bush I could actually deploy a shelter that couldn't be accessed by a tanker. The active crew protection on a tanker will always be better than a shelter. Not knocking it to bad. Just can't see it working for us
@shockabra19 Жыл бұрын
you never hike out to cut line?
@hairy-dairyman Жыл бұрын
@@shockabra19 we use heavy equipment. Bull dozens and graders mostly. If they can't access the spot we want to put the fire break we don't usually go there. In exceptional circumstances (I've only done it once) we will. But it's really somthing we avoid as anything we can cut by hand usually won't stop a fire. Embers and radiant ignition will beat it unfortunately

People need to know the everyday risk and how these firefighters keep themselves safe when there's no way out. it was extremely depressing to hear about the deaths of the 19 firemen, I was totally crushed! The shelters back then were not as durable as the shelters in this generation we are in now.

Out of over 1,000 deployments this past 40? years, these bags have succeeded. 41 men in that time have lost their lives not to the device, but to the ridiculously dangerous environment in which you pray to never have to use this device. Please, don't devalue the hard work these men and women do. Tools of last resort are there, again, as a last resort, and the baked potato bag has saved countless lives caught up in grass fires etc. The Yarnell case bowled in and the temperatures went over 1,000 degrees farenheit (while the shelters are rated to sustain at 500 degrees, akin to a moving grass fire). These men stack among the best of the best, and even still nature is a beast worthy of our utmost respect. Have a beautiful day, Ms. Gina.
