Thank you so much for this. I've been trying to understand how to do this for 2 weeks now and this finally helped!

I love you, thanks man. I needed to draw a social indifference curve but it's the same principle as mentioned in the video, as you just need to replace x and y with Ua and Ub.

for the MRS at the end. aren't we suppose to put a minus sign?

Thank you. Very helpful. However, what if instead of u = 100, I had u=sqrt of x*y, I followed all your steps except the fact-checking. Help would be appreciated. The equation is 4x + 2y = 40.

Sir, how u get equation U = X^2*Y? i mean, how u derive that formula? im so confused and have no idea where does it from, help me pls:)

You got -1.6 at first and 1.6 on the second one. How are they the same like you said?

The MRS equals the slope of the indifference curve after dropping the minus sign, which mathematically is the same thing as taking the absolute value of the slope of the indifference curve. For example, say the slope of the indiff. curve at a particular point is -4. The MRS at that point is 4, meaning the consumer is willing trade 4 units of good y for 1 unit of good x, all while maintaining the same level of utility.

Is it U = X^2*Y is absolute equation or you can derive the equation to whatever you want? im sorry if my question looks dumb, but it would be nice if u can help me to understand this
@EconomicsinManyLessons3 жыл бұрын
There is no single or absolute utility function. I didn't derive it. The utility function used in this video is called a Cobb-Douglas utility function (the most popular) and takes the form U =( X^a)(Y^b), where a >0 and b>0. I randomly selected values for the exponents a and b. I could have used different examples U =XY, U = (X^0.5)(Y^0.5), etc.

can a utility function be what you just made there? I mean shouldn't more goods lead to less increase in utility/satisfaction? (say if ur eating pizza and burgers, the more u eat the more ur full and utility would increase less), with that somewhat exponential utility function that u used, doesn't it defy the assumption.
