Bernhard Mathäss from Duttweiler in the Palatinate region practices one of the oldest professions: He works with natural stones. The stone sculptor designs gravestones. The specimen that "Handwerkskunst" looks over his shoulder as he makes it is made of yellow sandstone and Corten steel. In a quarry on the edge of the Haard, Bernhard Mathäss searches for suitable material with a very special grain. The production is time-consuming: From the first sketch drawing to the clay model to the finished stone, the stone sculptor is busy for over a week. And working on natural material holds surprises that only become visible when the stone is hewn. The 57-year-old Palatinate native has to react to them - but he has learned to do so.
