In this Tutorial I will show you how to determine the speed of your homemade silver gelatine emulsion or any other light sensitive material from analog films to paper. I will guide you step by step through the whole process including equipment, materials and many tips and tricks I learned through the years. I noticed that even though there is a lot of information out there regarding this topic they are often difficult to understand without a visual presentation. So I have decided to make a video tutorial where I will show a simple way of determining the ISO of the emulsion by using constant light conditions and a step wedge technique. This technique can also be applied to any other light sensitive material like paper or film. Knowing what is the speed of your emulsion is very important if you want to get constant results and if you want to know how and for what it can be used for. Enjoy 😊

I gave up estimating ISO of my dry plates. Living in Edinburgh (55° North) the UV varies A LOT through the year and day. Also it strongly depends on what is reflecting light into the shadows. Natural subjects will absorb a great deal of UV so the shadows can be really dark. As you want to expose for the shadows but develop for the highlights then my effective ISO is usually well below 1. In open shade in a natural scene I might start with f16 for 30s to be sure to get some detail in the shadows. The highlights would be really dense but can be scanned or salt printed OK. If the subject was in sun in a built up area I might use an app and measure for 1 ISO but I'd expect the shadows to still lose detail. As you hint ISO is only really relevant for panchromatic film. Indeed ASA/ISO was only standardised after panchromatic films became normal. Bottom line is a combination of experience and development by inspection is the only way to use simple dry plates - according to me that is. It is just like wet-plate collodion really. It is the same chemistry.

Very helpful! What’s great about your videos is that you actually experience the same problems we all do. Then you show us the solutions to those problems. Bravo. Well done,

Hi! At what ISO would you rate Foma's liquid emulsion when using it on dry glass plates? Keep up the good analog work/ Regards, Johan.

Thank for your video. I don't work with emulsions (yet?), but like experiment with different films and papers. I have a question about UV sensitivity: is it possible to use a UV filter to block unvisible light and take more predictable results with custom emulsions on different light conditions?

If you use an acid stop bath between the developer and the fixer bath you won’t need the chrome alum to prevent frilling the edges. Which emulsion was this?

hi lost light art i cant find a HC110dilution B developer here in my placee what they have is a C41 can i used thidss for my zebra plates?
@lostlightart6064
@lostlightart6064 2 жыл бұрын
Hey. C41 is a colour developer so it would not work. I would recommend you to search for D76, Dektol, Ilford PQ universal or something similar. What you want is a fine grain paper developer ;)

I bought one of your Zebra 4x5 Glass plate film holders. It has exposed sticky tapes at the hinges ( on both hinges ). What has happened? I do not think this shall be like this since I cannot load my glass plates without touching these nasty glues. I tried to dry them out but no luck yet. I wanted to let you know so you can fix this problem for your products. . Thanks
@lostlightart6064
@lostlightart6064 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, First of all thank you for becomming a part of Zebra Family! Regarding the hinges, whenever they are fully opened plate can slide in and out with ease without any touching of the hinge tape. However since Zebra products are constantly improving I will keep your suggestion in mind 😉

I don’t understand why you subtract from metered number like 12 seconds to 6, 6 second to 2.....4 sec to 1....?

Because you make exposure steps and the bottom strip receives the sum of all wedge exposures
