Correction: Those TV westerns were in the late 1950s and through the 1960s.

I used to do Cival War re-enacting. Usually these were three or four day events. On Fridays the school kids and Boy Scouts would come out to the event. It never failed that some kid would ask "What time is it? With all seriousness I would hold my hand horizontally to the sun and squint at it. Then I would stick my forefinger in my mouth and hold it into the breeze and say." It's 10:35". Of course I knew what time it was because I had just checked my watch in the tent a few minutes earlier. The battle would be starting shortly. I would leave the boys with this word of wisdom." Remember boys, leaves of three, for toilet paper be...."

Mr. K, you young kid. It was the Lone Ranger and Tonto (Jay Silverheels) who you saw so many years ago. I also saw it. Now at 80, I teach the trick to as many folks as possible. I actually got to meet Jay years later. Nice man. I am building your Bright Betty Lamps and thank you for those videos also. John C.

My father taught me that as a little kid over 60 years ago. Water (saliva) can hold 1500 times the calories of heat than air. That's why you feel it. It sucks the heat out of your finger.

I've got to say, your area is beautiful country. I knew about the finger-thing, but not all of it. The pivoting just makes sense and of course, you have to pay attention closely about the temperature.

I knew this already but this reinforces my knowledge. I want to use this to anchor a boat. Alway anchor downwind so the line doesn't end up under the boat.

Hi. Ive known this since a kid. I find its better to lick the hole tip of your finger all round and the coldest part is instantly obvious when youhold it up, without having to turn/probe. Im from South Africa 🤟

My grandpa (about your Dad's age, Herrick) taught me this when I was knee-high to a grasshopper. It works...but of course here on the Great Plains it only takes a couple brain cells to figure out which way the wind is coming from when it's gusting 30 mph 🤣😂

I've been doing that most of my life. Been licking all around my finger. I will try just the pad. That may be better. Thanks.

This Indian must have pinched the information from me! Or else, I must have gained that information along the way from the TV screen as well.

Didn't your mama teach you not to put your fingers in your mouth without washing them first?😂 thank you for your hard work on this video.

In European countries, priests ask you not to stick your finger like that, the reason is, i guess, since god is everywhere you might be sticking it on his private parts, which can be a nuisance for Him. There are nowadays other methods such as checking windguru online, God will thank you for that 😊

That’s how my father taught me, stick your entire finger in the air and the cool side is where the wind is coming from. I’ve taught my kids the same. I‘ll have to try pivoting next time.
