Coil split humbuckers are electrically equivalent to single coil pickups. They can be just as noisy. My Gibson Les Paul Classic has coil split capability, and the noise increase in that mode was quite noticeable. I decided to shield the control cavity with copper foil tape. I was surprised to find that the 3-way switch cavity also required shielding. The noise level climbed as I held the switch cavity closer to my body. After adding the foil shielding, the noise floor was greatly improved. There was even a small noise floor improvement in humbucking mode. Guitar manufacturers should shield all their guitars.

This channel has been surprisingly helpful. Guitar player here. Amp hums/buzzes uncontrollably in some places more, some less, some not at all. Is the Humno just a better/more versatile Hum Exterminator? I live in 🇨🇦 and have a basic setup, so which one is more ideal for me. Thanks for the help. Subbed! MJ

Great to hear that! The Humno is the latest evolution of the Hum Exterminator and works worldwide. Works with higher amperage too. Sounds like you're getting ground loops at some venues which the Humno would resolve.

So is the HumNo the same as the HumX, just a different solution? Have the Hum X at home, haven’t gigged in a while, just wondering if the HumNo is better.
@MorleyProducts

Think of the Humno as an advanced Hum X. They accomplish the same task, but the Humno works worldwide and has a higher amp rating.

Does this also work for speakers and monitors and subwoofers?
@MorleyProducts
@MorleyProducts 5 ай бұрын
Yes, but we do not recommend it for subwoofers as those usually exceed the max amp rating. That said, if you have a ground loop you just have to break the loop so it could be placed on one of the speakers and achieve the same result.

Hopefully it's not the power capacitors in the amp. Then you'll have to take it to a amp technician, unless you know how to do it yourself.

How many amps is your subwoofer? I'd recommend the bundle. If one doesn't solve it the other will and it's at a discounted price vs. buying the two separately: www.morleyproducts.com/hum-removal-tool-box/

Is it the Yamaha GNS-MS01 Speaker System? Since it uses DC with no ground prong the Humno or Hum X are not the right tool. Have you checked the cable? And is the power supply or cable running near another power source? Might just be EMI or a bad cable.

How can the humno or humx work when the amp has only 2 core mains cable
@MorleyProducts
@MorleyProducts 26 күн бұрын
If the power cable doesn't have a ground prong the Humno or Hum X are not the solution as they filter hum on the ground line. Plus, without a ground prong you can rule out ground loop hum as the issue. It's likely either EMI, Pickup Hum or something internal with the amp like a bad component or bad ground.

The humming sound only comes when i increase the gain on the amp. When i unplug the guitar the sound is gone, what can i do?

Best to look at getting a noise gate. That will mute your signal when you're not playing and reduce the hum.

Can a ground loop be created by two amps on the same power strip? If yes how is this possible when they have common ground?
@MorleyProducts
@MorleyProducts 7 ай бұрын
Yes, that's actually how we created the ground loop in the video. The "loop" is created when the second amp's grounded power cable is introduced to the connected grounds. This causes small interfering voltages to contaminate the signal. Ground loops can occur like this before the outlet, or after the outlet if there's improper wiring. Higher quality power conditioner strips can avoid this, but are pricey.

@@MorleyProducts Sorry if this is a dumb question but... What do you mean with before and after the outlet? Are you referring to different power sockets in a house? If yes it's known that they could have different ground potentials, that create ground loops. What I don't get is how can the same power strip, bad or good, develope a voltage differential?
@MorleyProducts
@MorleyProducts 6 ай бұрын
No such thing as a dumb question :) To clarify, they can occur before the power cable reaches the outlet if you're using a power strip or multiple strips to connect multiple devices. Sometimes the location does not have enough power outlet inputs available. They can occur after the strip just as you mentioned. One of our longtime employees recalls playing on a stage that's circuit was wired with the kitchen so there'd be terrible hum until the kitchen closed. In the case of the power strip there's a closed loop of ground connections in which current can flow rather than two separate paths to earth.

What guitar cables have shielding that won't cause audio hum from transformers? there must be guitar audio cables that have a certain type of shielding so you can use them close to transformers. Why doesn't Morley make a Guitar Pickup Hum device that can filter out the noises and hum from single coil pickups.
@MorleyProducts
@MorleyProducts 7 ай бұрын
High end cables with proper shielding like the Gator Headliner Series are better at preventing interference, but it ultimately depends on the power of the source and the proximity. Transformers are just one of the many sources that emit EMI. We are not in the pickup business and the technology to completely eliminate single coil pickup Hum does not exist yet. There are brands however that make "Noiseless" single coil pickups that significantly reduce that Hum.
@JohnShalamskas
@JohnShalamskas 5 ай бұрын
The shielding on a coaxial cable is electrostatic shielding. Transformers have a fairly strong magnetic field that is not stopped by electrostatic shielding.
@waynegram8907

@@JohnShalamskas What Shielding would STOP the transformers strong magnetic field? since electrostatic shielding doesn't work
@JohnShalamskas
@JohnShalamskas 5 ай бұрын
@@waynegram8907 Something ferromagnetic, like steel or iron, would shield the signal cable from magnetic (inductive) interference. That's not very practical in most cases, though. The next best thing is to run your signal cables as far away as possible from power lines and transformers . If you have to cross a power line with a signal cable, try to do it at a right angle.

The two amps that Hum likely have a ground loop. You would need a Hum X or Humno on one of those amps.

Correct. The second amp doesn't need to be turned on to demonstrate the ground loop noise. The Hum is present on both amps once the ground loop is facilitated.
