Not really, I got an automatic espresso machine that doesn't require all this hassle lol.. It can be fun perhaps but after a while u just want a machine to make your coffee quick & nice. I don't see the advantages of a semi-automatic machine like this, it looks nice, but what are the advantages? Only thing I can think of is the powerful steamer to use on milk drinks, but that's not something u need an expensive machine for.

@@bekeneel I can respect your opinions, but there are some people that thoroughly enjoy the art of the craft and learning/knowing how to fine-tune pulling a decent shot. No matter your preference, that still doesn't detract from the quality and educational factor of this video. I went from almost giving up on my "semi-automatic" machine that I wasn't using out of sheer frustration to using it multiple times a day because of this video.

@@bekeneel the big benefit of having more manual control is taste. If you are masking the espresso behind syrups and sugars then you probably wouldn't notice so a super automatic machine would be perfect for that.

Good explanation :) also a good note that no one really touches on: The finer the grind size, the less volume that the ground up coffee takes up in the portafilter, so it appears like there's less coffee because the size of the coffee grinds is smaller. Fear not, you still have the same grams of coffee, it's just compacted into a smaller volume. The tamper must therefore travel deeper into the portafilter to achieve the same tamp pressure. The pressure of tamping must remain the same when tweaking between different grind sizes to keep within the boundaries of changing one variable at a time.

That’s very helpful thank you I assumed I had to increase the quantity as a decreased the ground size which was incorrect. Thanks.

Close to perfect video!!! Wow this is so detailed!! I’ve had this machine for about 3 months and it’s a real game of trail and error 🤣 one thing I want to let you know (if you didn’t know already) is with the single or double shot button, you just have to hold it in for a second or two and then it goes onto manual mode. That way you can control exactly how long (in seconds) that the extraction time goes for. Keep making great content! Just when I think I’ve learned it all, I find a helpful video that humbles me. Thank you so much 👏👏

This is exactly the espresso maker i am planning to purchase, and am also planning to use exactly the same accessories. The only other two accessories I plan to be purchasing are a WTD tool and and portafilter screen. This is an excellent tutorial! The only part that was left out is that the portafilter should be heated up in hot water or by pulling blind shots because the Barista Pro does not heat it up. Also, it doers not warm up the cups.

You can use pre ground coffee but you will have to use the pressurized filter baskets which came with the machine. Look for the dual wall baskets which will only have one tiny hole on the bottom as opposed to hundreds of holes. Measure/dose 18-19g of the pre ground coffee into the portafilter and proceed as usual. Hope that helps!!

Also this machine has a manual mode. So you can hold down either shot button and it will pre infuse until you let go, when you let go it will start the shot, and press again to stop the shot. Barista Express user here, I usually bang down the portafilter on the mat after transferring the grounds from the dosing cup. That way they even out more to where the lips were. Hope you're using a slightly bigger basket than the stock one before doing so, as 19 grams could potentially be brimming over unless it actually settles just at the edge. Also if you feel extra finicky, use a WDT tool (acupuncture needles held in place by a handle) to de-clump and fluff your grounds before running the distributor over. It could eliminate channelling in your shot, as was kinda happening in your video lol. Just extra steps to ensure a satisfying flow of extraction, is all. Keep it up.

When I started I was doing all that mess too, using towels under the whole procedure and spilling coffee grounds everywhere... I solved most of the mess by simply doing the distribution over my knock box, and then using a portafilter station for the tamping, my portafilter station is also a distribution and tamping station so it makes everything organized and beautifully displayed on my coffee countertop.

Really clear and useful video! Thanks for all the tips. I’ve just started using the Barista Pro myself. However, no matter how much I change the grind setting to finer, I can’t seem to get an extraction time anywhere near 25-30 seconds for my desired yield ratio of 1:2 (18g of coffee to 36g of expresso). The best I got was around 20 seconds when the grind setting was at 1. Perhaps I need to change the internal burr setting to 4 like you did (currently on 6). I’m using a distribution tool like the one you have and think I am tamping down hard enough (but not too hard) so can’t think what else may be causing such a fast extraction aside from the coffee beans themselves. Any tips or hints as to why you (or anyone else reading this) think this may be happening would be really helpful! Thanks in advanced :-)

As of late, my doses have mostly been around 18.5g with a grind size of 6-7 and inner burr set to 3. I could've stuck with an inner burr of 4 and a smaller grind size but I'm sticking with it. Hope this helps!

Thank you for this tip! Since I uploaded this video, I've stuck with the press-and-hold double shot button, release when you want pre infusion to stop, and then press once to stop the shot (which I usually do based on espresso output more than time)

Thanks for that very well done video! Funny, I have the same scale, but from a different brand... I also have a Breville, but lower end one, the Barista Express, and now, I just bought a Lelit Bianca and I have to relearn everything... or to readjust at least. That's what made me watch your video. I noticed that even with the same bag of coffee, I have to readjust the grind size regularly. As time goes, I have to set it finer and finer. I think the variation of amount of humidity in the air also affects the required grind size.

I personally use both a dosing cup along with a dosing funnel. And it's good to get a dosing funnel that doesn't have the lip that goes inside the rim of the filter basket/portafilter. I then WDT and I don't have to worry about a gap around the inside of the filter basket/portafilter. Just my 2¢ and what my process has evolved into over the years with great repeatable results. Great video! And thanks for sharing!
@HijabsandAprons

Thank you for watching and sharing! I agree! My dosing funnel only has a lip that sits on the outside of the portafilter, so it's perfect for when I use my WDT tool now 🙂 though I find it a little difficult to distribute with the WDT tool; I need to experiment/practice and then share my findings. There's gotta be a particular WDT technique that works every time!!

I rarely comment on videos, but I figured maybe it's time to break the mould. I just wanted to say this is one of the best beginner videos I've watched. I've been a home barista for the past 3 years or so (I started with an AeroPress, then graduated to a Gaggia Classic Pro, which I modded a bit, just installed a PID, changed the pressure from 12 bars down to 9 and disabled the eco timer, but I'll be replacing the power switch with the normal power switch that comes standard on the American models as opposed to the rocker style switch on the UK versions,), so I can be a bit of a coffee snob at times, but this video reminded me of James Hoffmann's videos, both in teaching ability and videography skills. I love how you explained all the core components of good espresso-making in such a simple way and how you dropped some tips (along with the humour, lmao) in there. And props on your use of scales and a bottomless PF. Also, your latte art destroys mine, and I've been brewing lattes for like 2 years+ so fair play, lol. And if you would like to discuss espresso in more detail, then feel free to message me on here :)

WOW!! This is a high end professional video. The lighting, use of frequent camera angles, precise narration that is simple and precise and easy to comprehend.... Do you do create/edit content professionally for a living? My daughter is 25 and is still trying to discover her path. She mentioned a desire to work with people as a media editor for social media videos. How long did it take you shoot, narrate, and edit this video? If you don't want to disclose or reply that's okay. I just wanted to say you really did a outstanding job on this video. God Bless🙏

This was just a very nice Video, so first at all, thanks a lot! I have my barista pro for maybe 3 years and I've got a lot of very nice 53,3mm tools I can highly recommend (tamper and distributor by normcore, wdt tool and a funnel wich you can fix on the porta filter) but I was not drinking too much coffee the last time and I was a bit frustrated with some new special beans and how fast my pour was. So I needed your video to save some beans and get an idea again for the correct setting! Buy the way I really like your voice, it is so calming. I could run this video in the evening to sleep better 😅! I wish you the best and greetings from Germany Tom (Sorry for my bad English skills)

Fantastic tutorial. We've had a Sage Barista Pro sitting in the kitchen since Christmas, pretty much untouched after a disastrous initial attempt produced nothing but bitter brown water. Finally had another go this evening, using your video as my guide and managed to produce a drinkable shot on the first go. Shall keep tweaking it, but you've given me a great starting point.

Ah what a helpful video! As many of your viewers have mentioned already, your explanation and breakdown is so well done for a beginner! I’ll be shortly getting this machine and am researching how to pull the best shot possible and my favourite thing you reference is the words of encouragement at the end. It’s so true and cannot be overstated that despite all the research when we have the machine in our hands, we have to explore how it all feels to get the hang of it! Thanks you 🤌🏻🤌🏻☕️☕️☕️

Grind size😊 Inner bur set to finer set (default 6, she set to 4), she says inner bur set to 4 makes it finer. Outer bur set to 15 initially and said it was too fast, watery. Changed outer bur to 10 and shot was fast but still less than the first. Tried outer bur at 7 and was much better. Inner bur 4 and outer bur 6-7 is what she recommended for herself and her beans. General recs: inner bur 4 and start outer bur at 8-9

Just be aware that the inner burr adjustment is also used to adjust for the burrs wearing out over time, so if it's not needed, try to get away without adjusting it, or adjusting it only one step. They also vary with manufacturing tolerances. My Barista Pro (same machine), was able to choke without adjusting the inner burr, so adjusting it lower would have been a waste of time and actually would have made my dial in more difficult, but I will potentially still need to adjust it as my burr wears out or I switch to a different roast.
