I purchased nine (yes, 9!) of these lights as a newbie setting up a KZbin studio with different sets. I ceiling mounted 6 lights using scissor clips on the drop ceiling rail of a rented office. I struggled for weeks trying to properly light my back wall scenes and subject with different angles, settings, near/far positions, and adjustments. This video taught me a lot about light diffusion methods. I’m now seeking a video on how to best create “groups” of lights in the latest Neewer app version. That is, 2 lights (Group 1) run on the same settings while 2 other lights (Group 2) run on different settings/channels, without having to manually set each light.

Thank you so much for all of this info! Taping parchment paper to my light is a little too unprofessional looking so I started doing more research and here I am. After having pondered this decision and going back and forth I think I finally decided: The round softbox is what I am going to go with, even though it is more expensive, simply because it allows the softbox to be fixed to the light without having to take off the barn doors. In situations where we have to pack and unpack often, this is the best way for me.

I had almost all the lights you are talking about and need to add my opinion on them. The 660 rgb, when it comes to only the whites, is much brighter than the regular 660 bi color. Even with less lights for the whites the RGB still very much outperforms on whites only. And of course you have the benefits of the colors as well. I recently upgraded all of my 660 rgb to the pro version. And the pro is definitely brighter all around on both whites and colors. It's also has higher wattage. Hence the reason it's brighter. And why I upgraded. I also own all the softboxes and diffusion equipment you mentioned. One thing not to forget is the convenience of the neewers. Because they attach right on the light and fold up in a very small/portable package. One thing you should have tried is neewers all white one. I have those as well. I would assume that they would be a bit better at removing shadows in the face and neck. But they will probably also spill some light onto your background. I would love to see a comparison video made comparing the all white, the black sides, and the the black with the grid added. I may do my own testing but don't think I'll be able to make a video to upload.

Hey hey Adam! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! Awesome to hear that the Neewer 660 RGB Pro's are brighter than my old 660 bi-colors. I don't have the newers 660 series to see how they compared to these older 2.4g models. @@TLDR_filmmaker it's not just the pro rgb. I had the non pros as well. The regular 660 rgb. When I ordered them I also ordered 2 of the of the bi-color. This was a perfect comparison! I bought the Neewer NL660 set about 10 months ago. Unfortunately I got the version without any display on the back of the LED making it impossible to know which K values I am using the LEDs at. I am using this set for my KZbin channel, where I do drumcovers in a super tight space, which is where those LEDs really seem to shine due to the limited space (thank god for Manfrotto's autopoles!) . In my studio I am using the circular and the square softbox and when I use the LEDs in my living room, I tend to grad my cheap umbrella (lots of spill though...) or my 5in1 reflector. Atm I am saving up for the Godox VL150 for my talking head videos. I will definately keep my 660s though, since they are super flexible (with color gels, as a hair light, lighting the wall, etc.). Btw the cheapest option imo is baking paper (color shift can happen), a plain white shirt or a piece of bed lining.

@TLDR_filmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
Hey hey James! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! If you are doing "talking head" shots for instagram, these Neewer 660 LED panels are more than enough. If you are trying to light up your entire body for instagram with the camera further back, you'll want to look more into more powerful COB LED's around the 60-100watt range. From there you can determine if you want to diffuse them or not depending on what look you're going for. While the Neewer 660 can technically light you from further away, its going to look very deer in the headlights. Thought you do mention its in a small space, so I'm assuming you are just lighting up your face mainly and maybe half of you're torso. To which, yes, the neewer 660 diffused is more than enough for your needs. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

I did a massive comparison here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4HbeHSLfd2KmLM Based on the LUX reading of the 528W model, the Neewer 660 looks to be brighter, mainly because of the spot beam, but even so the fall off is still decently bright. For reference, based on the numbers and some math. the Neewer reads 805lux from 2ft away, the 528W would be approx 320lux from the same distance. Hope this helps.

@@TLDR_filmmaker hi there...how do you find the time to respond so many questions?! Thanks...I actually decided to get a Neewer NL 660 and I tested it against my old AL-528W.. since the 528 is daylight only it was brighter than the 660 of course at 100 power in DAYLIGHT colour temperature. I used my Canon 90D and a Sigma 18-35mm lens to test the lights and with the 528 on only it made my living room brighter than with the 660 in Daylight setting. The spot beam of the 660 might help a bit in some instances. The 528 throws light all over! which for weddings etc may be ok. But since I use the 528 indoors mostly, I always use a 1/2 CTO filter to convert the AL-528W from daylight to almost tungsten (don't like going all the way to 3200K), This makes the light about 4200K which is a good compromise I think and it doesnt cut the light too much. Then with the filter on I compared the output of the 528 against the 660 in tungsten and the 528 was a bit stronger hhh, but next time I will try setting the Neewer 660 to about 4500K which will have all LEDs on and roughly in the middle which perhaps will give me more output out of the 660?! I can't say if the quality CRI of the 660 is better than the AL528W. I hope so. Those aputures are older models. Dunno...honestly, the Neewer 660 is an ok light. Any videographer with 2 or 3 of those NL-660 lights could make a small set look good-but of course bargain lights are not meant for serious abuse but I like it-the remote will come in handy- and I think it will be useful. Only cost me $120 Cdn deliverd to my door so it's a bargain- I think that if I really need a stronger light I will look at the Godox ML60Bi- I like how portable it can be. That one could definitely light a podium for speeches etc- But for now I will "survive" with the Neewer 660 and 2 aputure AL528W...I'm not a pro yet. Thanks for your videos. Really hard work!

Brilliant review. I’m looking at some lighting for an online course I’m putting together. At the end you mentioned that these lights are great for a medium shot. What would you recommend for a light that can do the medium shot and some indoor full body shots at home?
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
Hey hey DogmannUK! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! For full body shots indoor you'll want to at minimum have a 60w COB LED. Assuming you will diffuse the 60w to lessen the harsh shadows, you may do a slight dance with your camera exposure and aperture setting to ensure you get the right exposure. If you were to get two 60w COB LED's so that you have one on each side of the camera, then that should be more than enough for an indoor full body shot. Here are the current 60w available that you can take a look at and see which is best for your needs: kzbin.info/www/bejne/apCVeXd8qqeniNE Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! @TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 3 жыл бұрын
Hey hey again L'ORAGE! General rule, bi-color panels will usually be more powerful because you have more LED diodes per color. When you split those with extra RGB diodes, you're losing brightness. 2nd general rule, if the LEDs have "lenses" in front of it, it will artificially have more power by focusing the light. But of course this means that lighting up a diffus material will be a smaller area than a larger area (for softer light). For future reference, every light I have every tests I have all the results on TLDRfilmmaker.com so people can compare output between panels.

What are your thoughts on the Godox SL60 COB light vs the Neewer 660 panel for a starter kit? The SL60 has 4500 lumens of output vs the 660's 2700 lumens. The SL60 also has an umbrella mount built in. Apparently the newer SL60s have much more quiet fans, but I'm not sure how to tell which ones they are on Amazon.
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 3 жыл бұрын
Hey hey again Chris! TLDR, go for the Godox SL60. Bi-color on a panel sounds cool and all, but its really not all that practical for a starter kit. 99% of the time you'll be in a "daylight scenario" so you want the most power possible. The Godox's power will open you up to using light modifiers and have it easily attach and you'll have the extra power to push it if needed. The neewer is a great at home youtuber kit because you're never going to move it. But you're somewhat capped in certain scenarios of lighting and because of its "Beam" nature instead of flood. Getting to most soft light is hard. Also its harder to cut the light compared to a COB LED with a bowens mount. I will say do not worry about the fan noise, if this is your starter kit it will, and should, be the least of your worries. Based on your questions you need to understand lighting and crafting your look first before worrying about the sound of a fan in your recording (which is fairly easy to remove). Those are my thoughts, I would also recommend you check out this video on how I come up with buying decisions here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aauyapSurtmZgZo Hope this further helps!

Hey hey goodelleric! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! If we're talking about SMD vs Lensed LED panels in these smaller softboxes made for these panels. While the SMD is technically the better type of LED to use for these softboxes. Because the softboxes are small, it really doesn't make that big or a difference in your final image. If you went with the circular one you might see a little more difference, but again, it won't be night and day. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! You mentioned the SMD version (P-600 2.4GHz), which doesn't have the lenses and offers a more a "flood" light to more uniformly illuminate an umbrella. I looked into it, but it only has 600 LEDs and 1700LUX/m output, as opposed to 2270LUX/m in the 660. I also found a "660 Advanced" version on Amazon, which claims to have 3360LUX/m (It's listed as "Neewer Upgraded 660 LED Video Light" on the Neewer site). The downside of this version is that it seems to be non-compatible with the 2.4GHz remote. But the extra output is tempting... Ugh, so many options! My OCD is going into overdrive.
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 3 жыл бұрын
Hey hey Chris! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! I hear ya, chances are the newer non-2.4ghz version uses a smart phone app instead. As far as the numbers they quote, I would take those with a nice grain of salt because chances are they are quoting the top end daylight color at like... 6000k+. A blue light spectrum reads much higher than an orange light spectrum. So when you go down to normal 5600k, it may all end up being the same at the end. Ideally you'd want that flood beam going into a softbox, especially if that softbox is very close to your face (which you want for soft shadows). But if you plan on keeping the light further away from you, then it's really not going to matter and you should probably get the one with the most output so that the light can reach you. @TLDR_filmmaker

Hey hey again Chris! The larger umbrella will not get much better results mainly because the Neewer 660 is a "Lensed" LED panel, which means the beam is more spot. So a larger umbrella won't really help because the light isn't lighting up the further outer parts of the umbrella.

No problem. The cool thing is point lights are usually harder then keylights and a one light setup works for me a lot. Just seems the bounce ratio to hair light just works for some reason. Thanks for all your hard work. It is appreciated!!!

Any recommendations for shooting product reviews? Thoughts? I don't have very much lighting options now, bc I usually shoot outside. However, I want to film more inside now.. will be ok? should I go with Umbrella or Soft Box? Please help.. thanks!

Hey hey TheTrailDancer! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! Yes, these LED's are strong enough to do product shots indoors. The Umbrella would technically be the most versatile setup. You can have the umbrella further or closer to the panel to get various levels of diffusion on the product. Of course this is all assuming the product can fit onto a standard coffee table and nothing something super huge. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Which led system is the strongest on the market so far? Of 2022
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
Hey hey Warrior Functional! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Aputure is easily the strongest followed closely by Godox who are transitioning to having a more fully cohesive family of LEDs at a slight discounted price with a missing feature or two. If you're looking for pure budget LEDs without the bells and whistles, Neewer is sorta there but not really rebranding high power LEDs. For those you will be looking at one off third party brands that appear and potentially just disappear in the market. At the end of the day, Aputure is currently the brand I have the most faith in even though its not a pure budget brand. They track record and company innovation ideas are on par with what creators want and need. Godox is almost there but they were first and foremost a Photography company first, so a lot of their early decisions were for photographers. However in the last 3 years they have slowly blurred the lines together and as or recent are starting to try and distinguish differences between what is better for video and what is better for photography. Aputure is purely with videographers in mind, so a lot of their decisions are for them. Of course it can be used for photos too, but its not their primary market. Hope this makes sense! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

hey TLDR thanks for your reviews.. thanks for the video. Can you confirm if the neweers 660 at 0% is the light completely dimmed like off ? I want a light set to be able to dim almost no light. (some other lights I bought let you put 0% on dial but in reality, you have like 15% of light and it is too much.) I need something reliable on that 0%. Thanks in advance

Hey hey Evans! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! The 660 Bi-color version does go down to 0% which is completely off. It does not have a 1% increment rather it goes in 10% increments. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Hi, thank for this video, I'm hesitate with the 660 pro, but as you said at the end of the video It will probably not be brighter as the bi-bicolor( did you saw both side by side ? to compare ?) , do you think I will be noticeable ? very much less ? I think the possibility of the pro with the rgb are very cool, but vs power ...brightness, does it worth . I also thought of bi-color with color filter ... but not easy as the pro .. thanks

Hey hey John! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! I do not have a pro to compare side by side, however knowing how marketing works when they say you get 10w more power, keep in mind thats 10w divided by the Daylight, Tungsten, and RGB LED. Meaning you're only getting an extra 3.33w of power out of each. So in my mind, its not worth it and probably makes minimal difference in actual use. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

@@TLDR_filmmaker Hey , thanks for your answer ! and do you think that 660 bi color ( normally it's with 2 x 330 white led) will be more powerful that 2 x 170 white led on the 660 pro, probably... or maybe egal ? because 2 time more led hum hum ..! what do you think ?

Hi. Is the SMD version better for makeup artists? Thanks
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 3 жыл бұрын
Hey hey agan Amby! The SMD will help better fill out a diffusion layer, but when you are dealing with a panel this small and using it through diffusion, the difference between the two is not large and your final use case won't be affected by it. Both types of panels are SMD's LED diodes, one simply has a lens in front of it and the other one doesn't.

Fantastic review. You touched on all the points that I needed to hear. Furthermore, I didn't even realize about the umbrella option and how good it looks. Where would you attach it to the light if i got the Neewer 660? Cheers!
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 3 жыл бұрын
Hey hey Gavin! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! The umbrella adaptor attaches to you light stand, and the on top of the adaptor is where your Neewer 660 goes. Its basically just an imbetween piece for the light stand and Neewer 600. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Great idea and very considerate to use those settings 3:00, which give an overview for any system !! They should learn it and do the rest of the community !!! I am a user of a Panasonic G85, m4 / 3, 16Mpx .... I am tired of seeing tests with wonderful Full Frame cameras, full frame lenses f1.2, even with the Sony A7SIII and that in the tests they put the ISO at 125000. ... of course it gives good results !!! but ... can I lend you my camera? See if you get the same results?!?! XD Thanks again for your consideration.

Hey hey again Hackerockmedia! I know right? This is why all my color and luma tests on lights are still done on my Panasonic GH5, because if you know the GH5 can handle it, then any full frame can handle it. That being said, on your G85, you will want to use ISO 400 to be your baseline ISO in general. With a MFT 2.8 lens and in a controlled lighting situation, you should be fine for a close up youtube shot. Hope this further helps!

Is there much value in leaving the diffusion plates on the light underneath the diffuser box? Or is the rule of thumb to pretty much always take them off?
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 3 жыл бұрын
Hey hey thelachster! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! There is technically some value to leave the plastic underneath a diffuser box, but the difference you see is not enough to warrant this approach as well as losing a noticeable amount of output to work with. With small budget LED panels like these, rule of thumb if diffusing is to take off that plastic cover. If you are using a much much more powerful LED panel, then you don't necessarily have to take off this cover because it will further help get you more diffused light for soft light looks. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!
