Thanks, this was much needed. I hate it so terribly much when companies force their idea of a workflow to their customers. Just give as many efficient tools as possible so people can work out a workflow that works for them... gheez.

Very helpful. Thanks so much! For some reason my Photoshop switched back to its default settings. An upgrade I guess. Anyway, my regular 'Save As' is back thanks to your instructions!

Thank you. This works unless you are recording actions for saving your files more quickly, in which case PS ignores the changed preference setting and still appends “copy” to the filename.

Hi!! I don't have that option in mi Photoshop! It forces me to save jpgs as copies instead of being able to replace them normally, and when I go to File Handling, the option you mention doesn't even appear. Help please!

Hmmmm. That's strange. Are you using the latest version of Photoshop? If not, I suggest updating PS.

As of some day in early Jan 2024 my problems with jpegs went away. No update has been released since I had a problem in 2023 and earlier. If send Photoshop a jpeg and I say Save Copy, the file type is automatically JPG. I just hit save and Jpeg Options appears, etc.

That’s good to hear. Not sure what would’ve caused that to happen. Are you certain that you only have one copy of Photoshop installed? An operations system update could have effects too. Either way, glad your problem is gone

As of today, this no longer works. They just plain force it on you now. Is Adobe speed running the 'how to alienate your user base' handbook? It's gotten so bad, just opening Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom, Indesign or Premiere makes me cringe. Instead of fixing existing bugs and improving features, they are more concerned about releasing half assed updates and features nobody wants, forcing workflows on you, changing established tool behaviors, and introducing new major bugs with everything they do. It's just gone from innovative to tedious in the past decade.

Yeah, Save as copy is really annoying. I know Adobe is just trying to protect people who don’t know how to use Photoshop, but in the process of making it harder for those of us who do. Luckily there is a workaround.
