IMPORTANT: If u still get an error after trying to reverse the process (if update still shows error/ an error when inheriting permissions for subkeys): First try going into the key UsoSvc. Try View>refresh if you dont see an arrow to expand the key. There should be two subkeys, "Parameters" and "Security". You will probably get an access denied error when clicking those two subkeys and this is why updates are still not working. Just follow the same steps used for the main key and Change owner to Everyone and then Inherit permissions for those two subkeys as well if they are unable to be read. Do the same for the subkeys of wuauserv and WaaSMedicSvc. Restart PC and start the 3 services again.

For people commenting that the yellow "update and restart/update and shutdown" buttons are visible, try to go into settings and pausing updates for 7 days. This removed them from me, pausing the 3 services didn't. After that I followed the video

@@parsnip82 easiest way to check this is after having removed the registry permissions for those 3 services, the descriptions of those 3 services should have shown an error in Services app (see 3:50). if you have restarted after performing the fix, those 3 services should no longer appear in Services app altogether (see 4:28) Next, you could check if you still have access to the 3 services keys in regedit. You should be getting an access denied error (error shown at 5:50) when trying to click on the service key in regedit. You can then go inside and change owner to Everyone, apply, and see if the permission entries have been actually erased or not. Maybe there was something youve missed while doing it... let me know after checking them :D

I remember trying to update to 21h2 and It failed and completely messed up my files. I had to reinstall, hope this works. There is another fix that works. A cmd which I can’t find anymore. It was straight up something like “delete” a service, found it on reddit and it completely deleted wupdate service, made wstore obsolete as well.

Thank you for the comment Deleting the service used to work earlier. But i think there are some other services which restore it to default in the new builds (maybe medic or orchestrator). And even if that worked, it would quite hard to reverse the process so you can update when you want to.

I have a Tuf a15 asus and I had black screen issues because of amd graphics and wupdate. Nearly sent it to the service because of it. Also had poor performance lately with any driver I used. Disabled automatic updates etc, it all went good until one day the software just closed down. I searched for it on my PC but it was like it was 100% uninstalled. I have several questions for you. I read the comments as well. 1. What if you did this method then install the new OS. Will the new OS install the update or will not install the new OS until you reverse it back? 2. Does disabling permanently or enabling windows update have consequences in the future such as Blue Screen, dll error, apps update like skype etc. 3. Win 10 pro update every 6 months,. If I plan to disable it permanently with your method on January and update it at the end of December, does windows update skip the 1st half month of update and update the December update the 2nd half month of update. 1) if new OS is installed, it will first format the disk. Hence all previous files will be erased and everything will function normally in new OS. If upgraded to win11, well you cant upgrade if the permission entries for those services remain erased. Reversing the changes by using the instructions in video + pinned comment will restore defaults and make everything function normally. 2) No. If everything is working perfectly when this fix is applied, everything will continue to do so. Individual software updates by themselves is not affected if it doesn’t go through the windows store or update service. 3) After reversing this fix and updating, windows will make sure all past bugfixes and patches released since your last update are applied when you update in December. It doesnt skip on any previous bugfixes/patches when updating at any time as far as i know. Cheers!

Updates usually end up causing more problems than doing anything actually worthwhile. quoting from a redditor, The ever-present risk of abstract Internet Boogeymen is always used as a bullet point to convince people they need to always update. Very seldom are exploits particularly applicable to home users, though. Stuff like CVE-2022-26809 has "security experts" telling people they need to update immediately to fix this critical flaw, but the vector of infection through the flaw could only take place over LAN, and isn't going to be a case of a remote attacker actually utilizing the exploit. It applies to businesses more because they tend to have much larger networks, with a variety of VPN endpoints as well. unpatched systems with exploits like this can be used as a point of ingress through a physical attack, or just through targeted Trojan horse malware or other social engineering attacks to convince staff to run a piece of malware. Patched systems can prevent that specific flaw from being used to spread. On home networks, which are much smaller, the risk is lower even though the attack is the same, because it's not going to be targeted. The most typical case might be a less savvy family member on your trusted, private LAN getting infected with malware that can use the vulnerability to spread. But at that point I'd argue that you lost the security battle as soon as you allowed that untrusted family member onto the same network as your other machines. Exploits are at best band-aid fix for that design failure. I was on Windows 10 2004 until last Saturday, which means I didn't get any updates, at all, for over 2 fucking years (I use the group policy to control updates). Visual Studio 2022 worked perfectly fine, so did Office. I don't know where this idea that if you get updates your computer's software environment will just magically start rusting or something came from but it's silly.

I have tried all kinds of fixes to stop Windows Update, and this one works. Update and Orchestrator does not show up in Services. Great job. The only problem so far is I lost my printer. I have a HP printer. But I can't see how this would affect my printer. But Microsoft likes to intertwine all its programs together. Any ideas? Thanks for the video.

Only these three services are affected by it. Printer drivers are not touched, so it shouldnt be the case. Was the printer working before you applied the fix? Of course, you could reverse it and re-enable the services, see if the printers work again. But in my opinion, i do not think it would make a difference if the printer was properly working before you applied this fix. As far as I know, the printer function isnt affected by these 3 services. But its microsoft, always trying to screw the user over, so i wouldnt put anything behind them either haha

Yeah, I done some research and it seems it has something to do with Trusted Apps. The drivers are certified and there is a setting that doesn't allow windows to run a non-signed driver or app. And it goes through Windows Update somehow to verify it somehow. It was working before I changed the permissions. I'm so tired of Windows. Just downloaded Fedora and I am going to use it as my daily driver. Got some programs that only run on windows so I have to keep it. I'm going to run both on separate SSD's and use Grub to load the one I need. But thanks for the help.

selecting" everyone" will make sure you yourself are able to restore the default permissions. i think it wont allow you to restore the per missions if you select system. ive successfully reversed and updated multiple times on many pcs by choosing everyone, its not an issue

I have a good pc, like i can play gta 5 but because of windows update it gives me a hella bad lag like it takes 30 seconds to end and the whole pc lags I had to format my pc every time so the lag would go away for a month. Well OF COURSE when I tried the first UsoSvc, it didn't do what you did, Now I got the error: Registry Editor could not set security in the key currently selected, or some of its subkeys. So I tried to reverse it and reenable it, and then tried to disable it again exactly like your process, but still same error no matter what I try. Not sure if anything will be disabled /working again. Why do I get involved in registry I know nothing about. Now it's laptop repair at $150/hour.

oh its an easy fix. please read the pinned comment. i can explain to you what has happened. There are 2 subkeys under UsoSvc, and registry couldnt set the permissions for those two, and thats why you get the error. i can try to solve your issue realtime, reach me at facebook.com/TechGeekEek. to reverse the disabling process, check the subkeys of UsoSvc and perform the instructions on the pinned comment. then you can disable it again, but make a note NOT to tick "replace all child object permissions...."

Im am guessing it is the Windows Update service. But i am not sure about that. You could try disabling the other two and keep windows update service running and check if the store works. However, since windows update service will be running, it will update push updates to windows as well. If thats true, then you cant have one without the other. Alternatively, i have seen a lot of people using ShutUp10 by O&O. Its a 3rd party software which apparently does the job. Havent personally tried it though.

I don't have any antivirus program on my computer besides windows defender. Will this stop it from functioning entirely or just make it outdated?

Ive checked and it looks like windows defender will still function. I am not sure if windows defender definitions updates will be impeded by this. You can try this and see if defender definitions still update. If not, just reverse this process and everything will be back to normal.

I was relying on a metered connection setting to hold off updates and now I don't have to worry about forced installs going past that. This is the first method that seems to not switch back (from reading other comments) so I'm looking forward to seeing how it does. Thank you for uploading this!

@@1612gceol Looking a bit closer, it looks like I was able to change ownership (to admin) on wuauserv and WaaSMedicSvc. The part it seems to be rejecting is "Replace all child object permission entries..." I also tried to only remove SYSTEM from list, and that was also rejected. Error is "Unable to save permission changes on wuauserv. Access is denied."

@TechGeekEek I think I figured it out. It didn't like that I was setting the owner as Administrator rather than my current admin account. Doing that, and deleting all explicit permissions in the list seemed to do the trick, and I still have access to adding the permissions back. I haven't restarted yet like the directions state yet, but in Services all three have errors in the description. Thank you!

@@MikeJensen3d i just realized what your issue is. After you change the owner to administrator, dont press apply yet. Remove the permissions as well. Then press apply. If the owner is changed to administrator and applied before changing any permissions, you will not be able to do so. Also dont worry about replacing child permissions. Not compulsory to tick child permissions clause.

Youre welcome. Disk usage 100% could be a lot of things though so im not sure how to isolate your specific issue. One thing you could do is stop the service “background intelligent transfer service” and see if it helps. Cheers

Nope. It doesnt affect windows media player. I've done this on many devices and can confirm. edit: it only affects 3 services ("Update Orchestrator Service", "Windows Update", "Windows Update Medic Service"), they are not used for anything other than windows updates and microsoft store.

If this is the case, stop the 3 services "Update Orchestrator Service", "Windows Update", "Windows Update Medic Service”, then confirm “Shutdown” and “Restart” are restored. This worked in earlier builds. However, I've got feedback from people who did this while "shutdown and update" and "restart and update" were shown in power options and this method still worked fine, no hiccups. Quoting the user in 3 consecutive comments from this video: I was too afraid that update will mess up my system so i went ahead and did the patch. It works and shutdown and restart option are there. Update & shutdown, update & restart also showing up but its not gonaa work since i have disabled the services. Previously these updates have consumed so much of my time. I had to do so many resets and reinstalls whole OS and take backups and all. All this would really take a toll on my work. Thanks a lot for coming up with this. Really appreciate you sharing this with the world. Well i have peformed a restart and a shutdown after the patch. Those options are still showing up in the power menu. The tweaked services did show error on the services app just after the patch. Everything shows up exactly as your video after the fix. Doesn't matter to me as long as those annoying notifications are away. I have latest windows 10 build installed. Whenever updates get downloaded and notified for installation, the shutdown and restart option don't go anywhere instead update & shutdown and update & restart pop up in the power menu. After the patch I have clicked on both update & restart and update & shutdown, both option function similar to normal restart and shutdown. Nothing strange happens. This should be obvious considering the services don't have the necessary permisson to perform the updates. Regarding stopping the services before performing the patch to get rid of those options. No it didn't work for me i stopped all three services few times before going with the patch and the options were still there to update in the power menu. I think they would go away only after installing the updates. But as i said previously i was afraid of my system getting messed up so i went ahead. I hope this info will be helpful to you. So I believe the workaround will still be fine in your case were you to click update and restart after removing their permissions.

Thats unfortunate :o Try this: Click the disable/enable inheritance button till it turns to“Enable inheritance”. Then delete the permission entries manually. Then click apply.
