Just so everyone knows - those 3 screws on the bottom of the case closest to the screen hinge are (according to the service manual) captured screws. Capture screws don't need to be fully removed from the bottom cover - just unscrew enough until they are free from attachment to the main body case.

I don't comment on videos and yet this was so easy to follow. Just take your time of course on removing the case especially near the bottom of the screen. I had a tiny piece of plastic from the inside corner near the screen of the case break and didn't hinder the case to be installed back on. Did a new RAM upgrade, SSD, and HHD drive. Saved me near $1k on a new laptop since the original HHD died.

This is the best guide for 5570 on youtube. Mine doesn't have the DVD drive but the procedure was the same. I could add one more 8GB RAM, 512GB M.2 2280 PCIe SSD (MVMe) Gen3 x 4, and replaced WiFi card to M.2 DW1830. The WiFi card needed three antennas but 5570 has only two antennas. I installed one more antenna on the back panel after grinding some of the metal shield off on the back panel.

I finally upgraded my 5770 Inspiron with a 512G nvme m.2 ssd. It's not necessary to remove the screws (the two by the hinge are captive) just unscrew the rest of them till they are disengaged then put tape over the holes to keep the screws from falling out. Now you don't have to worry about where they go! I used a polycarbonate cast iron scraper (Lodge) to pry the back off. It's very sturdy and I just had to run it around the perimeter of the kybd popping each clip in a single pass. It only took about 30 seconds to do that. Followed your excellent Macrium Reflect instructions to copy the partitions onto the ssd- it took about an hour. After changing the boot order it came up flawlessly in about 30 to 40 seconds instead of minutes. Thank You!

Fitted a M.2 SSD (Scandisk) 256gb to mine and followed these steps and the next video to clone. Boot time into Windows (and useable) sub 30 seconds such a difference (mine has 8GB RAM). Had issues with the clone, and had to wipe using Diskpart command in command prompt, but completing 2nd time worked fine. Video was clear and helpful, follow the steps and you will be fine.

This was helpful. I found starting where the removed disk drive is was the easiest spot to begin separating the cover. Also it's a good idea to place a cloth on your work surface when you have the laptop flipped over to prevent scratching the outer shell behind the screen. Additionally this computer also has the option of replacing the optical disc drive with another hard drive if you wanted to use a 2.5 SSD coupled with a HDD.

@@gaklimited I left in my HDD as secondary storage. Once I put in the m.2 drive and made it my C drive my computer boots up at least 10-20 seconds faster. Everything I do it is quicker and the battery last longer since it doesn't need to spin up a drive anymore. The monitor could be better but when I researched other laptops it was the only one that came with a solid 1080p screen in it's price point. All the others for the same price were 720p.

I added a 500GB Samsung 980 SSD to this same laptop. Here’s a few ideas to help. When taking off the screws tape them aside of the hole in which they belong. As you move the laptop around one or two screws might come loose from the tape. The credit cards work great to pry open, the case was somewhat hard to open. The area where the hinge opens is the toughest. I was afraid I’d break something so I just left it alone and never took the case apart from the hinge and had it opened about 90 Deg and installed the SSD with no issues (not even dropping the tine screw) so use a magnetic Phillips screwdriver. The case snaps together pretty easy. During the whole install process I did have a tiny pinhead plastic chip come off from somewhere; no issue though. I then used the Samsung Data Migration to Clone the old HD to the SSD. I had to do a lot of reading and the Samsung FAQs did help. I had to delete a lot of programs including the firewall, antivirus and turn off internet connection before the cloning process worked! But finally got it recognized and working with a speed of 1500/1700. A lot faster than the 5400 HD!!!!

I have the HP SSD EX900 PCIe Gen3 x4, NVMe 1.3 and can confirm that this Dell Inspiron is compatible with PCIe NVMe SSDs. Because this laptop's case and motherboard are rather flexible it can cause the M.2 SSD to pop out especially if you're opening up the laptop again. I put foam tape over both the socket and the SSD to prevent this.

Loved this video. Thanks a lot. This made the disassembling look so easy for people like me who have never dared open a laptop back-cover. However, I have a few questions about adding an additional 8Gb RAM to run in Dual-Channel. Does it have to be the same RAM module the company used? What are the latency timings of the RAM installed? Can I use any 2400MHz DDR4-L having near-similar timings? Thanks.
@accessrandom
@accessrandom 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you. That's a good question - I wish I'd zoomed into the RAM label while it was opened up. Looking at Kingston and Crucial's websites, I saw both CL-17 and CL-19 from Kingston, and just CL-17 from Crucial (and these were just single 8GB 2400 MHz sticks, which presumably would be matched with the existing one) - the common denominator being CL-17. Perhaps one of my subscribers/viewers can chime in to make sure?

So, kudos to the person in the thread who mentioned the flexibility of the case and how the SSD card may work loose - this happened to me today. I installed a Crucial MX500 1000GB SATA M.2 2280SS SSD - when I rebooted into Windows 10, I checked the device manager, and happily the SSD was there next to the existing hard disk drive. Similarly it appeared in Disk Management. I then used the excellent Macrium Reflect software to clone the existing hard disk drive onto the SSD (both drives are the same size, 1GB). This took about 45 mins and reported back successful. I could see the contents of the existing C: drive cloned onto the new D: SSD drive. I then rebooted to change boot drives but couldn't see the SSD listed as an option? What had happened is that, in the interim period, I had removed the case again to adjust something else and the SSD pins had worked loose. So, I reseated it and added a bit of insulating tape on the pins for good measure. I also reinstalled Dell SupportAssist to update to the very latest BIOS - changed the boot drive and, so far, my new 1GB SSD is quick! Great video! Very helpful.

@@accessrandom Not a problem! One other thing I found is an irritating periodic stuttering sound whilst listening to audio or watching videos on my Inspiron 5570. I have a few questions... 1. Can I install a WD RED 500 GB m.2 2280 SSD on my Dell? 2. If so, can I use my laptop normally, since I have the other HD, or do I have to do an extra step? 3. Can I upgrade my laptop putting the m.2 and an SSD 2.5 inch drive? Great video by the way, I was looking for it!
@accessrandom
@accessrandom 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Since the WD is a standard M.2 2280 drive, it should work (Dell's specs say the max size for an M.2 SATA SSD is up to 256 GB, but other commenters and my video have gone higher than that). You can use your laptop normally - the SSD would simply show up as an additional drive that you format. If you want to use the SSD as a boot disk, you would either need to restore the factory image to the SSD, or clone your existing hard drive partitions to the SSD. You can certainly upgrade the existing hard drive to a 2.5" SSD plus install an M.2 SSD - they will be seen as two drives.

I have this laptop, with 32G and a very slow 5400 rpm drive. So I await your next video, telling me how to boot up on a new SSD while keeping the 5400 rpm drive as a secondary. I am curious: do you see much benefit over an NVME drive than the SATA drive for most users, compared to the huge speed up moving from a mechanical drive to an SSD?
@accessrandom
@accessrandom 6 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid that I don't know the answer to that, as I only installed a regular M.2 SSD into the slot (not an NVMe). Sorry if I gave that impression. But my plan for keeping the 5400 rpm drive as a secondary drive is the same as yours. I did successfully clone and boot from my M.2 SSD and captured all the screens - I just need to create the finished video...

Your two videos were awesome, thank you. I've been running now for two weeks with an NVMe as the boot drive and the 5400 rpm as a secondary, and it has worked great. It used to literally take 10 minutes to boot the machine and let windows do its thing before it was really useful, now it's 30 seconds. (The other "tools" that helped me out a great deal were an egg carton and a sharpie.) Thanks so much!

For most users NVMe isn't going to make a big difference vs SATA III. But since the only unused slot is an m.2, you made the right choice to go for an NVMe drive anyway since m.2 SATA drives aren't much cheaper than m.2 PCIe ones.

I'm so sorry, your message got filtered and I didn't receive a notification from KZbin so I just saw your post now. When reinstalling Windows from an ISO file, it will list the disks that are in your system, and you can choose to which disk you'd like to install Windows during the install. I believe it would be the same with any recovery disk(s) provided by the manufacturer, but just in case it isn't: you can physically install the SSD you'd like to boot from, use the recovery disk(s) to restore Windows, and then install the other SSD. Sorry again for the delay in replying...

@accessrandom
@accessrandom 5 жыл бұрын
I think it really depends on how you plan to use the secondary SSD (which replaces the HDD). The M.2 SSD already has Windows on it so you wouldn't need to clone it to the 2.5" SSD - you could just swap out the HDD with the 2.5" SSD. If you plan to use very disk-intensive programs (like video editing, databases, etc.), you could actually install those programs on the secondary drive. Since it is an SSD, they would load faster. And if you keep the data (like video clips, database files, etc) on the SSD, that would speed things up tremendously.

Thanks! Yes, there are actually two slots for memory for the 690-0024. I would recommend the same brand/model of memory for each slot (or at least the same size/timings), as you can run into problems if they aren't the same - I list some models in the description based on the experience of some of my viewers. I'm not aware of any modules that are sized 12 GB, so you may want to check if your computer has two modules or one.

Thank you. If you are still using the HDD that came with your system, I would say yes - the SSD is well worth the upgrade, whether you add an M.2 SSD or replace the HDD with an SSD. Booting to Windows from an SSD will speed things up significantly. The benefits of a memory upgrade will depend on whether your applications are memory-intensive and/or the number of applications open at once. For general use, I find 8 GB to be enough.

I've noticed more people encounter heat issues with the i7 paired with 16GB ram, than do the i5 paired with 8GB ram (both 8th gen processors). Not that the i7 is problematic, just that it obviously is being called on to "work more" with the available 16GB. So while you can actually install a total of 32GB (16x2), a lot of people seem to overlook that you will be most limited by your processor. As in, just because you can cram in 32GB, you will really be taxing that i5 processor if you call on it to frequently be engaging that much ram. And 32GB will not magically be "top spec" for gaming, with the integrated 620 video graphics. It's great that Dell makes 2x ram slots, and 2 drive combos in a user/upgradeable laptop, but a lot of people mistakenly think 32 GB is going to make a ~500 laptop transform into a power station. It is neither channeled nor fanned adequately to place high demands on that i5 processor. This is an awesome machine with 8GB, paired with an 8th gen i5. The best modification I'd recommend beyond that, is to absolutely swap out the HDD for a SSD. That's going to actually help you with both the battery and processing longevity, plus you eliminate the moving parts of a HDD. A 256GB SSD truly will suffice for most people unless you are wanting to store really large files (video, etc). And if you really do want a massive backup drive, an external USB makes a lot of sense (plus you can use it for other computers/devices, as well). Hope this helps you, and others, who might be wondering about a solid configuration that maximizes the life expectancy while taking speed/efficiency into consideration. The biggest "speed" differences most people notice are in fact the bootup times; swapping HDD for SSD will get you the most definitive results. Beyond that, any computer is only as fast as its slowest link. The 8th gen i5 begs for more than 4GB ram, but most users won't honestly find it beneficial to go more than 8GB with the fan/cooling and integrated graphics on this Inspiron. Keep your machine vents blown clean, and this laptop should run efficiently for years - without melting your processor. HTH👍

@@MC-ti2vn Hi, thanks for sharing your insights. I have just bought this one with i7+16GB RAM+Radeon 530(4GB)+500GB SSD for video editing. I was thinking to upgrade the RAM to 32GB - are you suggesting this will cause a heat issue? Also, I plan to put in a 2TB HDD inside for storing videos so they can be accessed easily though not necessarily speedily. I may even add another 1TB HDD to the DVD-drive via a caddy. I will use SSD drive for real time editing, and the HDD drives for convenient storage - surely that would not cause any heat/performance issue, would it?

Thanks much. Since your laptop is in the Inspiron 15 5000 series, it should have an M.2 slot for you to add an M.2 SSD. Thank you! The interface for the 2.5" SSD is simply a SATA connector (where you plug your SSD into it), so there's no cable as such. If you look at the video at the 5:22 mark, you can see the drive going directly into the black SATA port to the left of the drive. I'm assuming that you only have an M.2 SSD and no other 2.5" drive - if you do have one, you'd need to swap it out for the SSD. I hope that answers your question...

You can think of NVMe as a faster version of SATA SSDs. The theoretical maximum speed of a SATA M.2 SSD is 600 MB/s while NVMe's is 3500 MB/s. However, the Inspiron runs the NVMe in a power saving (GT2) mode, which halves the speed. You will still see faster speeds over the SATA M.2 SSD, but it will not be as fast as its potential. To be honest, either will be much faster than a hard drive so you probably will not notice the difference for gaming.

I ran into trouble with a 17 Inspirion 5770. Used two types of cloning software and the damn thing refused to boot from the M.2. Of course, a problem was the native drive was 2TB and my M.2 was only 1 TB. But what the hell, my plan was to use the M.2 for a system drive and the native drive for storage. After trying everything I said to hell with it and got out my installation media for Windows 10. If you do this be sure you are signed in on a Microsoft account which will remember the machine and activate it for you. At any rate, I nuked both drives, re-installed Windows from media I created from Microsoft's website, and Voila! Success! An added benefit was that all of the Dell Bloatware and Crapware was gone. The clowns at Dell had five partitions on the native drive. On the re-installation of Windows, I only had three which is all a system drive is supposed to have. Before all of this, that machine was so slow spiders could spin webs on you while you waited for it to boot up. Now it moves like lightning!

Hi - the strap is to ground yourself so that static electricity from your fingers doesn't fry any electronic components. I clip mine to the metal casing of a desktop computer which is off the screen. ESD (electro-static discharge) can be insidious because the damage may not be immediately apparent (sometimes the damage is catastrophic - sometimes you see the damage over time).

Thanks for responding. If I don’t have the wrist strap, how can I install my new ssd without damaging the components? Please give me a detailed explanation as I am a total beginner. Thanks in advanced!

If you don't have an ESD strap, you can touch the metal (un-painted) part of the desktop computer at all times while handling any electronic component such as the M.2 SSD.

I agree - it's very slow with the hard drive. The M.2 slot in the 5570 can take a SATA SSD up to 256 GB or an NVMe SSD up to 512 GB (according to Dell's own Setup and Specifications document), but many viewers have successfully installed higher capacities (like 1 TB).

Thanks for your encouraging comment. You are correct in that the 5570 officially supports up to a 256 GB SATA SSD as shown here: topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/inspiron-15-5570-laptop-_setup-guide_en-us.pdf I can only speak from experience , which is that my 360GB SSD is over spec yet it works fine. Question. I would like to see a video of you taking either the CD Drive out, and putting in a SSD, configure it like how you did in "UPDATE: Using Macrium Reflect Free to Clone Windows to a Bootable M.2 SSD". Or taking out the HDD and putting in an SSD. And then do the same as "UPDATE: Using Macrium Reflect Free to Clone Windows to a Bootable M.2 SSD". The reason is because my Dell Insperon doesn't come with the SSD slot. Plus, I like how detail your videos are. Or of anyone knows a video that does what I just asked above, I will surely appreciate it Finally, I'll be subscriping to this channel, as I like both videios thus far. And comments are good.

If the 5575 has the same layout as the 5570, then there should be an empty spot where the hard drive is at the 4:44 mark. The only thing I'm not sure about is whether there would be a metal chassis to hold the disk (you can see there's a metal frame that holds the hard drive, and there are four black screws that hold the frame to the motherboard).

It doesn't show up as unallocated space in the disk management window. I'm really lost, and hoping it's a software issue. Along side that, i've added an extra 4gb of RAM, and i've seen major improvements in overall performance, which is great!

x2 is just the number of lanes for PCIe. x4 is four and x2 is two lanes. You should be seeing 3400 with four lanes, but I've discovered through some investigation that there can be other factors that slow down the read speeds, even if there are four lanes.

Upgrading the hard drive to an SSD will make the biggest difference - when I cloned Windows to an SSD, I saw a very significant improvement in speed. Adding RAM will also help (depending on what and how many programs you run), but it will not be as dramatic as an SSD upgrade.
