I have an Abu Garcia 6500 C, maybe from 1988. I found it in the attic, and I took it apart to lube it. It looks similar to the one in this video on the inside. I did pretty much everything like you did, but now it goes in reverse (and forward to0) and I can’t figure out how to lock it with anti-reverse? Any idea what has happened?
@Svdreamchaser

Oh. I am not sure as i cant think of any way turning the crank one direction would make the otems go backwards. If it is just letting it turn backwards. I think the small arm at 11:55 on the left of the image. There is a curved part called a pawl, it engages with the teeth on the gear to keep it from going backward.
@ryanboldt7751
@ryanboldt7751 9 ай бұрын
@@Svdreamchaser I figured it out, there is a dog tooth like thing (at 17:35 and 21:59 of your video) that actually slides onto the bottom post gear thing. When I took my reel apart it fell off that gear before ever saw what it was suppose to do or look like. It was kind of an intricate application and would be good to show how to do it.

Really great close-up video of the maintenance on this real. However I do have a question, why did you use oil instead of grease on all of the gears? I have always thought that you use grease for applications where you need the lubrication to stay put.
@Svdreamchaser
@Svdreamchaser 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. I think it comes down to personal preference, I agree grease will certainly stay longer however my experience is that grease also captures more dust and salt then oil does and I’m OK lubricating these every year. That’s my opinion, certainly I think this could vary depending on the person and I’m sure a very very small amount of grease would be a great solution. Unfortunately, many people over Greece applications and end up with something that can capture outside substances and turn into something more glue like then lubricating. As a seller, I’ve seen this repeatedly in things like winches on a boat for hoisting and adjusting sails

How about the level-wind line bail? Your whole vidio it appears that it was not down (up) into the guide groove of the cross member. Is that true or is it an optical illusion caused by the camera angle? Please reply.

@@Svdreamchaser, Your line guide was not in the upper frame groove in this video. That puts the pawl in a more stressed situation of keeping the line guide upright, and will wear out/break the pawl easily. Barclay is correct, and it isn't just camera angle, there is one instance you can see the line guide tipping out of the frame.

Not trying to be mean, and considering this is a 2 year old video, I am sure you figured out, but the work you did on the Worm Gear, and Pawl is the hardest way I have ever seen someone do it on these videos. There are much easier ways to do what you did. Remove the Pawl retainer, remove pawl, remove worm gear, tube slides out, line guide drops off. Make sure when you reassemble that the line guide is in the little slot on the frame that keeps it in place, you missed it on this video, and all that is holding things in the "Semi-right" position is the pawl, which causes extra stress on the pawl, and will wear it out quickly. Simply put, that line guide was not in the frame groove.

@@Svdreamchaser I had to listen to a half hour of "It's A Small World" to get it out of my head.... which ended up being like the little old woman who swallowed a fly. Seriously though, great video. Although I should mention, I assumed the 6500 C would have the same inner workings as the 5500 and while there are many similarities, there are a bunch of differences. This video did help me bring it back from the dead though. The only thing, there is a little tiny pin about 1/8th inch long and a 32nd wide that fell out of something while disassembling and I couldn't figure out where it went. The reel is working great though so not too worried. I'm wondering if it might go in the thumb slide brake thing on the left maybe since it doesn't seem to effect the main workings. Ever have a 6500 C apart anyone?
