Bought one of these at Costco for $900 2.7gig, 512t SSD, 16gig ram, used it intensely for 3ys, been fantastic ... But ... a few keys stopped working, 5-6 around the P , lately over by the 2 ... is that just gunk that got down in there? Will a take apart and clean fix the problem? Or is it time to get a new one? Runs great with AutoCad but the 16 ram sometimes can't handle large aerials and lags in Civil 3D, can I go to 32 gig in this machine? Thank you for your demo !

Great video, I have a question about the sound from the speakers, The sound is extremely low when using the internal speakers, if I connect headphones or anything else the sound is fine, I checked all the updates etc , could it be the internal speakers & how likely is it both went at the same time, any suggestions would be much appreciated, there doesn't seem to be distortion from the speakers just very low even when i downloaded Volume-Master App to try to get a boost, it does help a bit but still low Thanks Danny , PS( is it worth replacing the speaker ,how difficult is it to access them) Thanks

Hey man question ...so I have the flex 5 and on the inside at the bottom where all the cables are ...I think it's the digitizer there's two orange flat flex cables side by side.... there the only ones that have the little black latch to remove them.. Do they go into the screen on the other end? or is there another connector somewhere underneath the PCB? Because I accidentally cut one off so I need to replace this cable unless it goes into the screen on the other end it's impossible to fix correct? Thank you for your time!

First, thank you for a great tutorial and your willingness to answer so many questions. I do have one which I am still confused on. I have the Flex 1470 model which should be reasonably similar. I am pretty certain it's the screen/digitizer unit (flickering more frequently and occasional black out. How do I insure it's not just the ribbon? Are the ribbons reasonably inexpensive....and just plow ahead and replace both? Thank you!

I enjoyed your presentation on removing parts from the motherboard. I followed along removing the battery, then the hard drive in order to replace the hard drive and connected the battery once again. . In doing so, my laptop’s battery Indicator shows NO BATTERY DETECTED. What did I do wrong? Appreciate your help.

I would double check that the connector is all the way in and also not flipped upside down (you can see the wire colors in video, make sure yours is in the same orientation). If all is ok, try unplugging it and checking the pins in the connector, then reinstalling. Good luck!

the flex5 has a well-known problem with fan noise. is there a way to tell if my fan needs replacement? currently on the market for a replacement fan. I have tried all updates on the SW side of things, and I still get some noise.

A 1.5 and 2.5mm Phillips screwdriver, and a 0.8 and 1.2 Pentalobe, and T4 thru T10 Torx will be enough for almost everything out there.

Will adding an SSD to the empty slot be easy to do? I’m assuming there’ll be drivers to install? What’s the process on doing this? Sure, as soon as you remove the bottom case, you have easy access. In this model I see the caddy included but you may need hard drive screws to attach it to the caddy. No drivers needed. It will simply be available as another storage device in Windows. You most likely boot from the PCIe SSD anyways, so you would just have a faster backup drive.

Great video. I have the same model lenovo and like others, the screen used to flicker which a reboot would fix. Now the screen is always black, sometimes it made some weird oscillations. I hooked it up to my TV via hdmi and it works fine with no issues. Would the screen/bevel most likely be my issue? I was recommended this by a computer repair expert but would be too expensive for them to do it.

Just opened one of these and the hard drive was just about welded in place. I had to slide a long thin spudger underneath to break the foam that had melted / glued itself to hard drive underneath the end towards the SATA connector.

Unfortunately that was probably like that from the factory... its a lot cheaper to glue something in place than screw it in place. Most laptops nowadays you cant even get the keyboard out since its held in with melted plastic rivets. A machine can do that in 1 second compared to minutes for placing dozens of tiny screws.

@@Sellbrokedotcom Didn't seem to be a factory thing, actually - it still had the three screws holding it down. And the remainder of the foam didn't seem to have a glue layer on it. It seems like it just got too hot for the material and bonded it to the hard drive.

Is the wifi card considered the network adapter? I’ve come to the conclusion that the network adapter is faulty and needs to be replaced but not sure where to find that. I’ve attempted to update the driver, reinstall the driver and as I come to the end of the installation it tells me it “Cannot install drivers. No Intel(R) Adapters are present in this computer.”

I have a Lenovo Flex 5-1570 (80XB) and the the touch screen stopped working however, the digital pen still works with the screen. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling the HID-Complaint Touch Screen drivers to fix the issue but still it does not work. This is the 3rd or 4th time that the touch screen has stopped working with this laptop but the previous times i was still under a warranty and i was able to send it out and they where able to fix the issue in less then a day. Now I am no longer in a warranty and I'm looking to fix this issue. Since the digital pen still works with the screen but the touch input does not. Is the digitizer the issue or another faulty component?

It appears from the forums people have had good luck just wiping the screen off with just a damp rag. Apparently any film left from screen wipes or other dirt can cause it not to work. If you Google " Lenovo Flex 5-1570 touch screen not working", you will get a lot of results and ideas.

Since the keyboard is riveted, is it possible to just replace the ribbon cable? My Lenovo Flex 5's 3edc keys don't work. At first it was just the "c" key. I suspect it's the ribbon cable since it's now a column of keys. The on-screen keyboard works fine. I used compressed air to clean under the keycaps and end of the ribbon cable connected to the MB--still doesn't work. When my laptop is throttling with the fan, the 3edc keys sometimes work magically. I've watched this video many times per the past few months, so thank you so much for creating this!

Its doubtful, most keyboards have their end of the cable integrated. You could always just try reinstalling the ribbon on the motherboard side. Otherwise you would need the whole palmrest assembly replaced.

It seems we all have the same issues! On mine 67-yu-hj-nm doesn't work anymore (at first was only the N), and same as you I already tried everything, reseating the ribbon and magically starts working again for just a couple of days and then broke again. Beside of keyboard on my yoga I also have the damn power button problem (lots of users have it), I have to use the reset button, it works VERY occasionaly, so i think it's not the i/o board Thank you SeelBroke for the nice video btw, after this quarantine it's over I'll try to find a nice repair shop here in Rome and let them replace these things. @@buba278 As a matter of fact i did, they resoldered the power button (that failed again after some time) and reseated the ribbon of the keyboard thinking that's resolved and when i came the day after to pickup the laptop i showed them that the keyboard will not work. They refund me the cost of the operation and i simply gave up. There are two options: change the i/o controller (that's most likely the real problem), or use an external keyboard Or throw it out of the window like an olympic champion

On this model you can pull the heatsink by itself, not sure about the 14" though.... you could just search your exact model on eBay and see if the heatsink is sold separately or if it's attached to the fan.

Absolutely! Once you get the bottom case off, just unscrew the hinge that's holding down the DC jack and swivel it up off the jack. Unplug it, then install and plug the new one in and screw the hinge back down.

You need a SATA to USB adapter, then you can run your HDD off a USB port.

Always. You can start by checking/reinstalling the driver, which is the easiest. Otherwise there are two other probable causes. The cable is worn out from opening and closing the lid, or the digitizer is going bad (sits above screen, senses your touch). If the touch behavior doesn't change with a change in the angle of the screen (open in laptop mode, all the way open in tablet mode) then it's likely the digitizer going bad. You should replace it is an assembly (either whole screen or at least the screen/digitizer unit separate from the back cover) as its hard to get the screen and digitizer apart without breaking it. All the steps for removal are covered in the video. Good luck!

I believe yours has the RAM already integrated into the motherboard, so if your RAM slot is free then you can add an 8GB PC4-17000 SODIMM stick to make it 16GB.

Most all manufacturers are doing that now with their plastic palmrests.... cheaper to just melt it into place than to use 50 screws :(

@@Sellbrokedotcom In all fairness--and I know you're exaggerating for effect--I've been repairing laptops for YEARS and there's absolutely no reason, from an engineering point of view, to do this. It only takes about five or six screws (max) to stabilize a keyboard. They buried it underneath all the essential parts and made it inaccessible from the top. That, to me, is either poor engineering or intentional hamstringing of a repair process on a commonly replaced item. Either way, I'm terribly disappointed in Lenovo (and any other manufacturer who does this to the degree that the keyboard can't be efficiently replaced. That is, it's not the plastic rivets that bother me, but the inaccessibility).

@@markomus1 You are correct. The keyboard should be a simple replacement job. I am reminded of a Corvette in what I remember reading about (never owned one) in the early 70s. To change the #8 spark plug required almost pulling the engine to get the old plug out.
