thank you for this, I have been making mixed media pieces for many years that I never new were very much related to nihonga style painting, perhaps also degrees of kintsugi philosophy. I feel like I have been making art in this style without understanding it's ancestral link on my fathers side. It feels like a wonderful inner reconnection to my own blood and I hope to be able to study nihonga with a teacher one day in the future.

Miss Kiyo, thanks for your answer. Nihinga means painting in japonese, somebody tolds me. So, may be can you explain the différents ways to practise Nihonga, I mean differents classics ways to do it. Thanks in advance

I was wondering if you could mix the colors?? Also, do you know what’s the difference between nihonga and Chinese calligraphy ink painting? I see the same tools and the from I can see the difference is the powdered color pigment vs sticks? which is so cool to see!
@KIYOHASEGAWA3 жыл бұрын
It is possible to mix colors, but if the size of the particles are different, you can‘t mix it equally. The difference of Nihonga and Chinese-painting is powdered pigments vs sticks, also the paper, and the history.

If the glue can lose its adhesive properties as it spoils, then how does it continue to work on a painting? Is it because the process of painting spreads it thin enough to not spoil the same way? Also; I have no sense of smell, so is there another way to tell if its properties are changing other than smell? Something like texture or taste maybe?
@KIYOHASEGAWA4 ай бұрын
The adhesive strength of glue weakens when the water mixed into the nikawa starts to spoil. If the nikawa solution dries on the painting, it will not spoil, so the paint’s adhesion will remain unchanged. If you don’t judge by smell, as explained in the video, you can apply a small amount to your hand to check for adhesive strength🤏You can also consider the time that has passed since adding water to nikawa. In hot summer months, if it has been left for a day or stored in the refrigerator for more than three days, or in winter, if a week has passed, the adhesive strength may have weakened.

Thank you, Kiyo, for such wonderful videos on Nihonga. I am just learning about this way of painting. I have heard that it is best, once colors are mixed, to let them dry overnight. Then next day add more nikawa glue to the dried pigment. Then add water and pour off impurities. This could be done up to three times. Is this necessary? Most videos that I have watched, the painters just start painting straight away after mixing color for the first time. Which is your practice?
@KIYOHASEGAWA2 жыл бұрын
You don’t have to do that process and you can paint straight after mixing for most of the pigments. There are few pigments that is better to reduce impurities such as Azurite and malachite. (though you don’t need to wait overnight nor dry it) I have explained how to pour off impurities in the video of “heating mineral pigments”.

Hello Kiyo chan. I have seen many videos on making the gofun. It seems that people make a lot, and save much for later. How long can the gofun be stored once it's mixed? Is it kept in the refrigerator? Thank you so much!

Gofun will be explained in another video 😊

Wonderful video! It is hard to find good information on these topics. BTW, do you happen to know anything about the paint medium used on the faces of Chinese Opera Puppets (京劇人形)?? I have many of these puppets that I would like to repair, but I cannot find detailed information on how to make and use the paints. The little bit of information that I found says that the paints are made of "oxhide gel" or "oxhide glue" mixed with pigments. However, I don't know WHAT KIND of pigments are used in this case, and I don't know where to find oxhide gel, or if it is possible to use nikawa instead of oxhide gel. Any info you have would be very, very appreciated. Thanks!

Hello, Ox hide glue is almost the same thing as Nikawa. It is animal glue especially made from ox. Here is a link of product. pigment.tokyo/product/detail?id=1170

Your videos are so helpful. Thank you! I have a question. Can this kind of paint be used directly onto wood?
@KIYOHASEGAWA3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. You can paint on wood. It is called 板絵”Itae”. You need to do the dosa sizing on wood, and when you paint, the nikawa (adhesive) should be stronger than usual.

@@KIYOHASEGAWA Another question, please. Do the mineral pigments dry true to the color of the dry pigment? I use oils with pigment but it makes them darker. Thank you!
@KIYOHASEGAWA3 жыл бұрын
@@Iseeyouclearly Yes, it is almost the same as the dried pigment. Sometimes it slightly differs depending on the adhesive (animal glue). But visually, it becomes the same color.

Hello!! Thank you so much for these videos once again!! May I ask you something? I was thinking of buying a local animal Rabbit-skin glue sold here and make a solution of it.. Would it still work like nikawa or end up like nikawa if I do that? I know some uses rabbit skin, so I wanted to be sure..
@KIYOHASEGAWA3 жыл бұрын
Hello, thank you for your comment! Rabbit glue will be fine :) In Japan, nikawa is also made from rabbit skin as well as deers, cows, and fish.

what brand of pigments do you recommend?
@KIYOHASEGAWA2 жыл бұрын
It depends on where you live. If you live in Japan, there are multiple choices. If you live abroad, I think Nakagawa is the main nihonga pigments you can get.
