This definitely helps me as I have a 11×11 drawing paper and I'm using the rule of thirds in my drawing but I'm finding it very difficult to get equal squares. But are my eyes and mind playing tricks on me cuz I could swear that the bottom is just a tad bit more than the top

Your method only works for square paper. What about rectangular paper? If the paper has weight as w and height as h, than the portion you take is actually (4h^2 - 3w^2)/(4h^2 - w^2) * h, and it happens to be 1/3 * h when w = h (square).

No it's a square. But if you want to divide the short side it still works (just fold away the bottom part to get a square and then fold it back afterwards).

Not sure of that helps you but I've seen it quite often that "square" paper isn't actually square but a little of, often not enough to have a huge impact but with this method that seems to be the case. Using this www.origami-resource-center.com/divide-paper-into-thirds-3.html And dividing parallel to the first fold seems to give better results in this case
