How I DIY installed a 24v plug and play garden lighting system including motion activated staircase lighting. In today's video I will be showing you how you can install your own lighting system and as its 24v it's super safe and doesn't require extensive excavations or an electrician.

I like Charlie’s video that are always informative but I wonder who wants to pay £1600 for some garden lights. The margin must be outrageously high. Charlie used to suggest cheap diy hacks but this is not longer the case. It almost gives the impression he is reading a sales script on this one.

@@antoinec1066 totally agree. I have made a range of DIY videos for my own channel - more of hobby than serious dedicated work but mine focus on doing jobs on a budget mainly and so I can't relate to this video at all really. £200 I could probably achieve the exact same look...

It's a cool idea - bring a 24V around the garden, and power wirelessly-controlled lights. Huge reduction in complexity. This should work with Z-wave as well. Z-wave would let you extend the range easily, because any powered z-wave device is also a relay, so, if you put, for example, a z-wave light switch by the yard door, it'd automatically relay the communicattions from inside the house.

The remote seems to be a bit limited in terms of having to be operated manually - you mentioned a Smart plug . . . our patio has lights around it set into the walls/cladding (with lights on the sides of the steps) all operated from a Hive plug/socket giving fully programmed lighting .... just have to adjust the schedule as the seasons change. The lights are all on one circuit but it wouldn't be difficult to create several circuits and use more than one Hive plug. No colour adjustment bells & whistles but the simple white lights work for us!

very nice install, but you should discuss the pro/cons of such an install. Like how it affects nightlife for bugs, birds and other life in the garden as artificial lighting is very "polluting" for them, and our benefit should be weighted against theirs. I've got garden lights myself, but I use them for occasions to not upset bugs whom I rely on for my fruit trees and flowers

I have been looking at Paulmann for cable lights for our open plan room as they are the only people that seem to offer that. Looks great. Most people will have a run of concrete pathway between the house and their grass/ seating area. I'd be interested to see how you would tackle that ( is it cutting a trench into the concrete pad ? If so, how deep do you need to go ( are the regs around that ) ? Then what should you use to sheath the cable ? And will an inflill/ back pour of concrete set properly or be continually prone to cracking/ lifting out ?

Seeing the comments about the overpriced nature of the lights, my feeling is that what you are paying for is convenience. You could easily get a variety of manufacturers' zigbee lights for far less, but then you've got to figure out how it's all going to be powered safely - a system like this just comes out the box and hooks up. I'd do it the more difficult way, but I've been playing with lighting and gone assistant for years, so I've got a bit more expertise in that area to have confidence to do it.
