Sounds like the cdi then! Only thing you cants really test ! Check grounds also to be safe from coil n cdi ect no rust or paint ! I’ve seen handle bar switch short to frame loosing spark , had spark run down back brake cable the gear box lol 😂

Ok guys ... first of all thank all the answers and the post. For your information I found the problem. After reviewing everything according to the info of the post plus the electrical diagram. I found that the motorcycle had no current because the switch was always connected to ground. THE WIRE B / R always grounded .... the problem was THE BRAND NEW SWITCH ... yes ..... the connection inside the switch, the little drop of welding was touching one of the walls of the housing, there was the issue .... I grabbed an old saw blade and made a small long knife and with much care removed the welding from the housing and ate a bit to prevent future touches in the housing. SO PROBLEM SOLVE. FYI ALWAYS IF YOU REPLACE A KILL SWITHCH CHECK WITH ALL WIRES DISCONNECTED FROM SWITCH .... THE BLACK WITH A RED LINE WIRE ..... USING AN OHM METER ON CONTINUITY SET THAT THE WIRE IS NOT GROUNDED. (again switch need to be disconnected from bike harness) CHECK WITH A PROBE ON THE BLACK/RED LINE WIRE TO HOUSING ON SWITCH, IT MEANS WERE THE SWITCH IS INSTALLED. HOPE IT HELP THANKS ALL AGAIN.

Good to hear . It's hard fixing over the internet more of a guide . I had one pw not sure which video you seen . Spark ran through rear brake cable . You could see it spark at back wheel ! It's a process for the strong . I tell my buddy if it was easy anyone would do it ! Kids riding all that matters !

I’ll try to find it but should be 50 atleast I think mabey 80 plus volts I’d guess the pack would make it higher at the plug hundreds at spark lol but I don’t know for sure ! The towney 50 is same bike n qt50 also same stuff but they have lights

Awesome video! My pw50 wont rev up. Ive tried bypassing the switch and replaced the entire harness, carb , fuel lines. Top end has been replaced. Not sure what to test now. Idles great but won't rev up at all. Reeds are new, too. The voltage off the stater is high but jumps around is that normal?

Voltage It will jump with rpm’s up or down ! Sounds like carb or fuel issue if you have good compression! 32 to 1 good oil not gas station junk premium fuel not ethanol! Check spark plug gap also your secondary jet may be clogged also

I’ve been tryin to get a switch with a square plug 4 wire can’t seem to find one I keep getting a flat one. Wonder if it can be hardwired like colors without the plug?

If it has same wires you should be able to if I’m doubt open both n check we’re the wires go to in switch if colors don’t match ! It seems like I’ve done one beefy but it’s beets long time ago ! I’ll look I’m bit I got old parts bike in shed !

These things seem like they haven’t changed in years but maybe just slightly. Bought some parts off Amazon (Junk). Got frustrated and took to the shop. They sent back not fixed. They said there guy is the best. Hmmmm. But he didn’t fix it.

Yes I have hired a few of those guys myself, it hurt my name with few people! Don’t hate the business unless you complain n they keep him ! They guy that didn’t get good service at my shop one of thousands, he just took bike home didn’t say anything until year later at race track carb wasn’t done at all ! I’ve always stood behind my work n by him not saying anything I kept guy a week longer than I should have , someone else called n complained ! The first sighn I had him do compression check on atv , he said it held 90psi for 3 minutes lol I’m like sir they tester has valve that hold the pressure in a cylinder has rings n valves ! He was like 60 said he was Harley mechanic! I put tester on pulled throttle wide open and it was120psi 90 I would have rebuilt it ! Have to have throttle open to get air ! Make sure you give shoo call to make it right ! Sometimes they just got bad apple , but sometimes you may have a case deal out or something that may be harder to find ! Good luck !

So I have got to the diode have put my meter on 200v ac have put my earth on the yellow wire and tried earth at the coil and positive on the red wire when kicking bike over most I get is 2.0 is that to low? Hi Walden, Thanks for the video. My friend gave me his non-running PW50 to fix. I've been through all the tests you describe and have replaced the ignition coil. Now it will start and run for a couple of minutes then it dies. Sometimes it starts again, sometimes not. The only reading I got different from yours was the magneto resistance, mine being around 175 where you had 303. I'm thinking a winding is breaking down and causing the intermittent running fault, what do you reckon? Thanks for your help. Cheers, Richard.

Sounds right the shorter the wire the closer to 0 . So yours may be bad bout half way . And when it gets hot it gets worse . Or check spark plug make sure not burning oil from bad seal on crank in gear box

I am getting ~ 25 Volts on the B/R wire coming from magneto if it disconnect it from the harness. When I connect it to the harness and put the meter back on it I only get a couple of volts...

You got a weak stator at 25 ac volts I'm guessing you barely have a spark or only sometimes . What does the blk/ red to ground ohm at unplugged from harness ?

@@WaldensWorld It seems like I barely have a spark and its intermittent. I've replaced everything from the switch to the magneto, but I already found some issues with the new harness. For one, it came with the orange and black wires reversed that plug into the CDI relay (not the magneto). And from what I can tell, the diode on the new harness reads opposite of the inline diode that came with the bike. Does that make any sense? Mine is a 1981 which (I think) makes it a pw50 H model. I wonder if the wiring diagrams are the same across all models?

@@taildrgrplt is it stuck on start ? That has a limited on it ! It's different than run ! If you got new stator . N harness . The cdi may be bad . Or you start run switch . Is stuck on start . It fires like every other time on start vs run ! Check grounds also ! Diods are one way so if your getting spark it should be working ! Flywheel is clean no broken magnets also ?

Hi, Can you please clarify what the controller units does? Have a very old PW50 with an ignition problem. There is a weak spark and sometimes it fires but will not run. Have bused through the harness and it is OK. Very old fragile and cracked insulation, but OK with some tape!. Do you know how the controller interacts with the CDI? and is it possible to eliminate the controller? thanks

Hi, I have made some progress with this. It appears that the function of the controller is to limit the engine RPM when in the "Start" position, to prevent the bike from taking off when kiddo starts it. The controller has a connection to the magneto AC output that powers the CDI. Since the magneto AC output impedance is in the region of 300 ohms, it probably shuts down the CDI by effectively shorting the magneto AC output that powers the CDI. Another function of the controller may be to limit the RPM (& speed) when in the "Run" mode. Maybe someone knows something about this. The problem with the my PW50 seems to be that the flywheel magnets have become demagnetized, producing a smaller, weaker and erratic spark, making starting very difficult. There is not much around on the subject, but it appears that old flywheels( mine is 35 years old) are prone to loss of magnetism. I have bench run a CDI and discovered a simple method of doubling the spark coil voltage by adding a simple extra component into the system. Am in the process of determining if this gives sufficient extra spark to make the system work with the weakened flywheel magnets. If that does not work, then it means a new flywheel is required.

yes you prolly have bad handlebar switch ! they go out ! my grandsons will be running and vibrate to start then well no more running ! l;ol sorry i got a.d.d. didnt notice pw video ! most bikes have rev limiters built in cdi box so motor dont blow if you fall with throttle twisted !

I have the same problem . weak spark and intermittent spark . Replaced the magneto and no change . Replace CDI box . still the same . weak spark . I would rotate the engine with a drill on the fly wheel , at a slow steady seed it would have a steady spark but weak . NOTE , I have rev-limiter unplugged along with handle switch unplug also to narrow it down to Mag to cdi box and coil ( New coil) . Just getting now where

Sound like your wiring is backwards or switch under side is grounding to bars some how . I had one shooting sparks though the back brake cable by the rear wheel ! I'm think that switch !

I'm not near one but typically the black n whit is kill switch . Sime after market switches are wired differently if you have the old one you can check the wires on it n what switch they are soldiered too !

I’m now thinking it could be control unit but will try earth on switch Does anyone have wiring diagram with control unit removed? did you take carb apart ! sound like either piston in carb is in 180 degrees backwards or you gotr the adjustment screw in to far ! if you took carb apart the is a slit down the back side and a angled bottom edge on front ! the angled edge goes twords adjustment screw ! hope this helps !

Your throttle cable is not adjusted properly and constantly giving the bike throttle. Also try adjusting the idle down. The problem in your case is in the carburetor adjustment. Bob 831 383-2676

I'd check ground wires new spark plugs . The diod is in the wire harness I don't remember where but you can feel it . I don't think that's the problem though .

I tested the switch and got ohm readings when I was supposed and didn’t get any when there shouldn’t be any. Is there a way to bypass the switch for testing purposes? I tried disconnecting the plug where the 3 wires run, but that didn’t change anything either.

There is a inline resistor in the wire harness it may be bad ! But if I remember it’s for the start button not run ! Cdi may be out it has both modes in it !
