Yes, the technique would stay the same but you could start the layers lower or make them smaller to have room for longer layers toward the top. I have a video that shows how I fade my older son's hair. He wears a mid top fade.

I would just go slow and use the guards to make sure that you don't cut off too much at once. You can also cut downward to cut off less hair at a time.

We tried it and it was ok...........I still could not get out that line :( HOwever, it was decent for the first time since I've watched this vid.....He wants his hair at a 3 guard on top so I couldn't get the fade right since we used one Andis trimmer and a conair clippers. Please tell me how to keep it tall on top and then fade down to erase the lines. I want to just get the exact same clippers here on your vid......where did you purchase from? Kim Tone I got those specific clippers from Sally Beauty. If you want to keep more hair on top you may want to keep more on the sides too. For my older son (10 yrs) i keep his hair much longer on the top and sides. I use the same technique with the same guards but make the layers much smaller. So the first layer would be maybe only 1/4" above the ear with the teeth pushed back at the lowest setting. The 2nd layer would be about 1/4" above that layer on the sides but you can make the layers a little wider in the back if you want since there's just way more surface area back there. Then you can do another layer with a #1 guard keeping it very thin on the sides. Then a #2 guard. And if you're worried about how short you're making the sides do downward strokes first so you'll take off less hair when you get toward the top. There really are no "rules" when it comes to a fade aside from blending out your layers. You can make them as big or small as you want and whatever length you like best. This is definitely something that's going to take practice. I did not do it perfectly the first time. But if you continue doing it and trying different things you'll definitely find the perfect cut for your son.

Lol, when you get an at home kit the guards will be numbered and usually color-coded. Teeth forward and back refers to how long or short they'll cut the hair. You got this!
