My son just did this service but forgot to put the grease on the inside of the seal. Is is possible to wipe some on the stanchion and work it back and forth to get sufficient grease in there without redoing the entire service? Thanks.

No, a seal is meant to keep things out. If what you say could work, then a couple of wet rides and your fork would be filled with water and grime.
