How to do a parallel parking in three steps

• Signal right and Pull over next to the car
• Stop your car mirror to mirror with another car
• Turn on Hazard light or keep your right signal on
• Back up the car until the tail light is in the middle of your back door
• Turn the wheel all the way to the right and back up until you see 45* triangle (think pizza slice) in your right mirror
• Turn wheel back to straight and keep backing up until you see a very small triangle
• Turn the wheel all the to the left
• Keep backing up until you become parallel to the curb
• Put the car on park, straight the wheels and turn off the hazard lights

ItsADEXTER thank you. The idea is to make approximately 45 degrees angle. I believe your car is a huge suv and you are asking about that kind of car. I never tried with a big suv but definitively the middle row window would be the guide to take.

Quick question, my car has side mirrors that automatically tilt down when in reverse, would I simply turn left when the triangle is bigger than what was shown in the vid?

If your mirrors are tilting down automatically , still your triangle should be smaller than the one at the beginning but it shouldn’t be too small.

This looks easy. I have a question. What if you have to parallel park on the curb, do u have any pointers about how to do it? My street is so narrow with a lot of cars. I have to park between 2 cars and on the curb. I'm a little bit nervous about doing it. how could I do this?

Hi Kayla, parking on the curb is illegal as I know. But if it’s allowed then you have to be very careful about that. It’s a bit tricky. You can use the same technique however when you are about to hit the curb you should apply more gas and as the tire is on the sidewalk immediately break so you don’t hit any other car behind. Then do the same with front wheel. It’s a bit dangerous as you know. Be careful and good luck.

Using my technique will help you to learn how to make a judgement and you will know how close you are to the curb. That’s how I park my car everyday.

Sorry for the late response. You need to Turk it to straight. Some cars, one turn can bring back to straight but some cars could be one and half turn.

Why do you put hazard light during parallel parking? And not used right signal? One of test site instructor failed me for not using the hazard light. But on driving manual nothing mentioned about use of hazard light during parking.

Every examiner make their own judgements and decisions. Some examiners thinks right signal is the best while some are thinking hazards are safer. Hi, No matter what they have no right to fail you just because you didn’t use hazards or right signal. It could be a point but not a fail.

I’m not sure about Texas but what I can tell is wherever you do a parallel parking you need either signal or hazards. It really doesn’t matter as long as you have one of those. If an examiner doesn’t like it they will tell you and You won’t get a point for that. In real life I prefer hazards.

It works perfect for the road test as well as real life parking even for tight spots. For tight spots you have to play with the angle, do not back up straight at the beginning too much. So pretty much you do the exact same maneuvers .

Sorry for the late reply. In the mirror if the triangle goes smaller it means you are closer. If you loose it you may hit the curb.
