the only issue with doing it this way is that if you go to download at a transparent background the white square will still be there. any clue how to do it so that the entire image becomes transparent where it is white inside of canva?

Hello JoannePlans, I did not have that issue. My box did not show. You could try to download as a PNG and re-upload the PNG to canva and use the background remover tool and see if that works.

When you download you have to check the box for transparent background but that is a pro feature in Canva.
