I Steve McCarthy would personally like to thank Dave ccrx6700 and the Cumberland Mine management for the invite to ride along on a track inspection. I was honored to share my some of my track experiences and knowledge from my 25 year railroading career with the Canadian Pacific Railroad in the track department. Dave is a very cool down to earth gentleman and we love watching his channel. My wife stumbled across one of Dave's videos a year and a half ago and told me to watch this so I did, Since the first video we connected through KZbin and the planning began to take place to have me come out for a ride along. That day was a very cool experience for myself but also getting to visit another type of railroad and industry that I never experienced before, Most of all getting to see what Dave does on a daily basis and to share his past track and knowledge was also very cool. Like Dave would say " THAT DAY WE WERE RAILROADIN"

I lived all my life in the two places Steve worked: Milwaukee and SW Wisconsin along the Mississippi River! I'm very familiar with the CP in Iowa as it street runs there in Lansing Iowa across the river from me, and I lived a couple of blocks from the Milwaukee Road roundhouse back in the early 80's! I recently saw a crew of like 20 maintenance-away machines over there on the CP track, and we watch the Christmas Train every year (except during covid). What a small world! The CP track just south of La Crescent has a long tangent, and the trains scream when they go through there! I'm sure Steve remembers that! That entire area is gorgeous with lots of hills, streams, and eagle nests. Steve was quite lucky working there!

Very interesting to hear about the nuances in track inspections between the mine and the main. It's possible Steve even used to check the mighty MILW RD main where I now watch CP at Elm Grove WI. Good evening Paul, Sorry its taking so long for me to reply to these but with gardening and everything else this time of year it gets hectic. To answer your question is yes, I took care of that territory most of my railroading career. Our territory when I was assistant foreman and then section foreman for a huge chunk of it was on the Cudahy Section from Oakwood Road in Oak Creek Wi to Pewaukee Wi where the single main started which Elm Grove and the West Allis Line switch was in our territory also. All three switches are gone now but what a pain in the rear the switches were at Elm Grove to take care of. The most frustrating area of our territory was at the Duplainville diamond area and you want to talk about a maintenance headache. I did work two stints on the road with the rail relay crew on the CP River Sub which was a cool sub to work on. Worked as track inspector out of Milwaukee and that territory was yards in Milwaukee Wi, Menomonee Belt and also included was the Cutoff to Pewaukee on the switch to single main. I also worked the Sturtevant section for awhile and finished out my career as track inspector on the CP C&M sub out of Sturtevant. Got my welders date also out of Sturtevant.

The intro is great like others I think you should keep it for all future uploads. Steve must be a wealth of knowledge, the company deserve a big thanks for allowing him to ride along with you and share some of it, I am sure you will be looking at rail anchors and evening up the shoulder on both sides now. Good to see he was impressed with your standard of maintenance that's something to be real proud of. Interesting to me is I notice the problem with bridges on my train rides out and there is a spot in a station I pass through often where the subway goes under, that is always getting a bad dip in the track because like a bridge that must have a solid roof and softer ground either side. Really enjoyed this Dave
@ccrx67002 жыл бұрын
I'm very glad to hear you enjoyed the intro and the video cedarcam. Your opinions are important to me and I thank you so much for sharing your wealth of UK railroading with me, I love to learn what others are doing and what they call things. Honestly I was a bit nervous to have a big time railroader coming and worried about what he would think about my track. But he was so kind and gracious and it really made me feel quite good to know I can talk railroading with the best of them, at least here on this side of the ocean.... :-) I would be all ears and eyes if I ever came to visit you guys.
@cedarcam2 жыл бұрын
@@ccrx6700 I bet you were nervous but Steve sounds a real kind guy as you say and it was great to hear he was not critical of anything he saw and just pointing out the things to look out for while inspecting. I bet you would love to see the differences between our track standards. As far as I know we do not have different classes of maintenance like you but our main lines are kept to a better standard and inspected more often than the less important lines.
@StormySkyRailProductions2 жыл бұрын
@@cedarcam Wasn't there at all to be critical and yes having a great time explaining to the viewers about what I have been taught by the older generations of people in the industry which this was such and honor to do.

@@StormySkyRailProductions Steve Thank you. It is great you shared what you learnt and looked out for, keeping the old way of doing things on record. More and more old skills are being lost over here now, and I am sure over your side as well, as new technology is brought in. We still walk through inspecting but a lot is now done using special trains that take HD video and photos, the video is synced with sensors so, say a dip in a rail will be recorded and they can check on the video to see the fault. I was out on the track over here as a signal maintainer.
@StormySkyRailProductions2 жыл бұрын
@@cedarcam Your very welcome, I couldn't agree with you more on the art that has been lost. My opinion you still need the human factor in track inspecting and the human eye also. Experience cant be replaced by technology that's for sure.

Can do a lot more cool stuff with a GP as far as mounting than with a phone. A nice variety of mounting stuff is found in kits, I got mine on Ebay for like 15 bucks.

@@ccrx6700 A Freightliner? I would think that with what one of those costs, it should at least have power windows. But maybe the Management at Cumberland just didnt want to pay for an extra that works easily, and opted for Ye Olde window cranks that are sometimes a bear to operate. It does look like a nice truck, but i imagine it rides rough on the highway due to the weight of the hi-rail wheels. That was a surprise learning that there are 9 classes of rails, an inspector really has to be alert and on their toes doing an inspection.

I had class today on the federal track safety stuff, and I didn't understand it at all. It was all taken from the book from 2023 track safety 213. The book was written in this hyper legalistic way. Very math heavy. They say we take it every year. The guy giving the class just read a power point presentation taken from the book. Literally, he read every word off a slide. The guy next to me seemed to know his stuff. He helped me a lot, I already forgot like 98% of it. I remember something about 62 feet, and there was a string involved. They mentioned something about deviation. I was hoping there was some tutorials somewhere.
@ccrx67008 ай бұрын
Depending on the class of track, many fed code measurements are taken on a 62 foot chord, most geometry trucks do the same. Don't get discouraged you will get it all figured out sooner or later, hang in there. Hope you can find an older guy who will help you out. Thanks for writing in and the very best of luck to you my friend.
