How to Do Easy Epoxy Inlay Test Success and Fails

How to do epoxy inlays is quick and easy. Testing five minute epoxy with mixing both acrylic paint and tempera paint into inlay allows you to see what works and what does not work. See success and fails.

When sanding the epoxy off, is there a better grit that will do the job? I have a project that I think this idea would look great on, but wasn't sure if the epoxy will easily show scratches from the sanding? Or it it a matter of polishing epoxy?? I have not messed with epoxy before other than just on top of a table. haha Thanks

Great video. I love the second cut creating the drop shadow. Really super look. How did you line it up for the second cut? Did you worry about it being exact, or just "close enough?"

Would you be able to make a block out of Epoxy Resin then use the x-carve to router out a shape in the middle of the Epoxy block. The cut-out shape could be filled with a different color epoxy fill. This should look very cool with a light behind it. From your example the x-carve had no problem cutting through the epoxy inlay. Most people doing inlays with epoxy are using wood, I can't find anyone using the cnc router on resin alone.. Thanks

So after you sand it all flush, how do you specifically polish the epoxy to shine? What kind of headlight polish do you use? Does the use of that affect the poly finish coat?

The headlight polish can be any brand. It is an abrasive. The polish will put a great shine on it just like it does on the headlights. I will sand first up to about 1500 grit then I use the headlight kit.

I just a project with epoxy inlay.. I never really got the color to stay within the carve. What did you seal with and what epoxy are you using?

You must seal the wood completely. If this is not done then the epoxy will seep into the pores of the wood and show through.

I have a piece of 3/4 pine that was pre-painted black, and then a 2D image was CNC'ed, roughly 1/8 inch deep. I want to fill, but not overflow, the CNC'ed areas with a metallic red epoxy. Which product/method would you suggest?? I am especially concerned about using a heat gun or torch on the piece, because I don't want the black paint to peel.

Use a slow cure epoxy. It will give more working time. A hair dryer will help to remove the bubbles without effecting the paint.

@@PawPawsWorkShop Thank you!!!!! Do you think that I should also apply a coat of polyurethane to seal the wood before the epoxy, which might help prevent air inside the wood from bubbling up to through the epoxy??

Why flame the epoxy? I'm assuming that helps get the bubbles out?

The flame is to pop the bubbles. It works immediately. Some people use a torch. I think that is over kill and can burn the epoxy.

Hello again, just completed my first carve and I surprised myself. My wife does a lot of epoxy resin and acrylic paintings. She is going to like your vid. The font is Lavanderia. I do not think it is a Pro font. This project was done only using the text. After the first carve, I filled it in with the epoxy, let dry and sand. Next, I shifted the text over to create the shadow and carved. I filled that carve with black epoxy.

Paw Paw’s WorkShop Good morning. Yes she pre mixes almost all the time either with acrylic paints or with matalic paints . They look so cool. I will try and do the text offset today. Your vids are most helpful and I am on the forum, but it’s like learning a foreign language right now with some of the terminology.
