Acrylics should work.

Try using an ink pad instead, so much easier. Just pop the lid off of it and turn it over onto the foam and dab until you've covered the whole thing.

It looks like it was cut from a foam tray like you get food on at the grocery store. It's why I am here so I can reuse them since no recycling options are available in my area. Heidi
