Following are things that I gathered about Asian paints from Saurabh Mukherjee's Unusual billionaires: 1. Asian paints started in 1964 with household distemper when all other paint companies were making paints only for industries 2. They figured out that indians need good quality paint to colour animals horns and in small quantity, hence served the needs 3. Asian paints started using data analytics before it was even a thing 4. Lastly I think the biggest moat they have is their distributor chain which is a big entry barrier, I have read that they used to provide discounts to dealers if they make their payments on time and other such perks(maybe health insurance as well, not sure)

Asian paints has more than 50 years of data, it knows which area needs what shades at what day and they already have it prepared. Also it has an advantage of ITR, every store stocks paints 4 times a day. It is twice that of Berger the next one on the list. Philip Fisher says always ask the management what do you different that will give you an edge over your competitors, for Asian Paints its this strategy of using data and increasing turnovers that Mr. Jigash Choksi created has worked wonders and despite being the biggest player it has the best ROE, ROCE & other fundamentals.
