I have my Silhouette for a few months now. I use it for airbrush stencils, but didn't know this could be done too. Thank you for sharing Amanda.

Wow! Thank you so much! Trying to etch "tea soaps" onto a jar that holds (guess what?) tea soaps and since my friend is willing to sell me her Silhouette, this is perfect!

Marcie, that came out beautiful. Thank you for the great video. I do have a question, can you paint the etched glass. In other words, can you color the etched parts and if so, what paint and how to do. thank you again for sharing.

I followed this tutorial but my design has parts that aren't connected, such as eyes. I can't get those on the transfer vinyl. I did not use the stencil vinyl. It is so stiff and doesn't work for my project. Can you help me?

Very nice video, and informative. Is this your own image? I am curious, I have my own decal I want to print as a stencil and debating between Silhouette and Cricut. As to the glass etching, I never tried your way. I use Armour Etching ($20 for 10 oz.) I use a dedicated paint brush (cheapo) and dab it on. when finished wait 10 seconds, and re-dab to get rid of air bubbles. Then let is sit for 15 minutes. I like how that one works so fast, but seems that there is less time if I screw up to fix it.

Do you need to use "stencil vinyl" or would any sticky vinyl work?
@ericd7709

I was wondering why you used invisible vinyl, but then when you were squeezing out the bubbles from beneath it, an opaque vinyl would hide bubbles. Maybe a very light-coloured transparent vinyl would help ? The stickiness will be important - less sticking to the original backing paper < more stickiness of the top to the 'transfer film' < most stickiness of all to the glass.

So doing etching this way is permanent and won't come off in the wash? Also wondering if you put vinyl on cups (not the etching) does it stay there eg coffee mugs, plastic cups etc
@MrStoneSkull
@MrStoneSkull 11 жыл бұрын
Just a guess, but it would most likely come off in the washer. It would probably last longer if you washed it by hand *edit* I meant vinyl on the mug, not the etched glass

your project is lovely i am apprehensive using your scraping tool to spread the cream may i suggest using an old GIFT CARD grab one whem your at any resturant or hobby shop they are at the check outs and are free. then id stick said card in a little baggy for next time you use it.i only suggest this because of the toxicity of etching cream.

I never realized that I could do this with my silhouette. I'm wondering if they have colored etching? Would you suggest permanent vinyl or etching? I suppose it would be the look you want. Is the etching permanent? Sorry for all of the questions. Great job on the directions...

When I remove the transfer tape from the stencil it’s sticky around the design, is that normal?

Two questions: (1) What is the "etching creme" made of or how does it function? I remember from high school chemistry classes that SiO2 is really inert to chemical reactions and erosion (effectively etching). (2) What's the approximate cost of the supplies to make this flower?

Almost certainly it will contain HF - HydroFluoric Acid. 'Potent' is putting it mildly - Google [HF MSDS] for the safety considerations. In industrial applications, education and laboratories it is handled with extreme care - apron, goggles, visor, thick certified rubber gloves, fume cupboard ... At home, it is happily used in sink cleaners ! Use in plastic bowl in sink with window open. Keep gloves on when removing stencil - some cream may have seeped underneath. Wash all tools and your artwork very thoroughly before removing gloves. Preferably use separate tools just for etching. Highly recommend getting HF Antidote Gel (Calcium Gluconate) £15 from Amazon, for immediate application to the skin if you accidentally get some on your skin. HF dissolves calcium out of the bones ! Seek medical attention immediately if you don't have the antidote yourself. Safe disposal is a problem - flush with huge quantities of water. May corrode ceramic drains. Don't bin the old jar of cream in the trash - your Fire Department may have HazChem disposal facilities ?

I don't understand the need for that extra layer (compared to just cutting a stencil out of contact paper). Am I missing something? Can contact paper (shelf liner with adhesive back) not be used to make an etching stencil on this machine?
@creativeplanetjanet
@creativeplanetjanet 8 жыл бұрын
OK, thanks. I guess that extra layer on top is just to help smooth and secure the cut stencil extra well when sticking it down then? IDK, just seems a bit unnecessary.

To add color to your etching, you can use Rub N Buff over the etching. It adheres to the porous etching and you can just wipe the excess off the area around the etching. It comes in many colors.
