This was great! I just started nature study this month but it’s been more like a walk since I had no idea how to actually do a nature study.

You might encourage wonder in a nature journal by (after logging all the observations in the margins or labels), add the prompt, "I wonder...." and have your child add a question about the object that the observations does not answer, such as "I wonder what this silverfish eats." Let the wonder linger and then later in the day or at a set time during the week, revisit all the wonders. Maybe you can make the wonders part of the visit to the library so they can use the library resources to find out. Enlist an older child, parent, or other older relative to assist younger children record their thoughts in their journal. The person should take dictation of the child's exact words and not be tempted to add their own words. After the child has recorded their thoughts, the mentor/assistant might want to add a letter (on a separate paper, inserted into an envelope attached to the journal entry that reflects on the experience. The separate note ensures the adult is not overstepping their role in the child's journal.

Very helpful information! I have a 3 and 5 year old and this is our second year of doing weekly nature walks and journaling. We use Exploring Nature With Children as our loose guide for what we're looking for and then come home to draw what we discovered. Having a snack for the trail is VITAL to everyone's happiness and success of the walk! I am going to try your tip of journaling right after reading a book and also giving my oldest a little more direction on what to draw.

So I used to be so elaborate. I used to dissect , label and paint pictures with my son of what our nature walk was about that day . NOW, I have a newborn and I have him draw something from our walk from the day and I ask him to tell me what he drew . I date it and write down what he says . I want to do more . I know eventually I’ll get back to our old schedule for now I’m doing a quick study and discussion. My son is 5.

Thank you for sharing this great idea! Going on a nature trial Sunday. I plan to homeschool for the first time this coming year. I will have a 10th, 2nd, and pre k student. I would like to implement nature studies in their curriculum.

We do a nature walks twice a month with a local homeschool group. There’s also an outdoor science co-op we started this year that is once each month.

Thank you so much for this video! You just covered everything I have struggled with. Nature study and journaling now sounds totally doable for me. I love the idea of doing it after reading. My kids are 6, 4, 2, and 9 months. I feel like I lose control when we are outside. They are all over the place. I think reading and journaling before going outside will really help keep their attention and then focus their attention once we are outside! 😁

I just found your video and I found it to be so so helpful. Thank you for making this. You made a good point that each child is different for sure because one child pays attention to details while the other child is fast and all over the place messy! My oldest is the take your time artist. She is a graphics designer now! All grown up. Now my youngest daughter is miss speedy pants. She wants to get to the next best thing. I am trying to slow her down but we but heads because we are so totally opposite. A friend of mine suggested that the Nature Walks/Study would be something that would help us greatly that way she can learn through observation. I am excited to take all this on, and I am also hopeful it will work. Thank you again.

Hi Joy. Thank you for this beautiful video 🤗 we live in middle east, it's mostly desert and we have super hot summers 🔥 can you give me ideas about how to do nature study in extreme weather. From November till April we can easily go out but the rest of the year it's boiling hot.

Yes, I lived in Arizona, so can understand. We would go out early in the morning. We've also done nature study on things like weather and the planets that are easily done indoors because you can't exactly touch those, but you can observe and learn about them.

Do constellations\ astronomy/ maybe even some sort of critter pet too... fish, frog, amphibian, bug, or a few indoor plants. Even a herb garden that the kids are responsible for.

This is sooooooo helpful! Thankyou! I have just started trying to nature journal. I have a 5 and 3 year old. Question: for the 5 year old is it okay for him to color in his drawing in however way? Like an earthworm that looks like a rainbow? I'm really new to this! And I wasn't sure if I should insist on the colors trying be similar to the real thing or let him just color how he wants! Thankyou!

Hi Sarah! I'm so excited for you to get started! In my home, I don't require ANY sort of school work or nature journal entries until age 6. (That doesn't mean they don't do a drawing with everyone - I just don't require it.) I do ask children, to make their pictures "the color God made them." This year, I did not correct my opinionated 4 year old girl, but because I know he is capable, I did ask my 5 year old boy to stick with the proper colors. Remember that it is more about them establishing a relationship with what they are drawing and working to put onto paper what is TRUE. I might ask him to try to find the pencil that is the closest color to the worm and then show him how to make marks on the paper and compare to the color of the worm. I prefer my younger children to describe the worm orally and look closely at it and perhaps then I would just write down what he says. I hope that helps you! You are doing so great!

@@joycherrick Thanks so much Joy!! It does! I wasn't sure if I should let him color his rainbow earthworm or insist he color it as close as it is to the real thing!!! Many thanks Joy! Your videos on nature journaling has been very practical for me to implement!

Do you keep your own nature journal that you do with them, or are you mainly guiding and helping with theirs?
@joycherrick
@joycherrick 4 жыл бұрын
I definitely have my own journal but don’t always get to journal when they do. Sometimes I journal on Sundays as a form of rest. Sometimes, I get mine out while they are doing independent work. I’m lucky if I get to do one entry per month!
