This video shows a typical early intervention speech therapy session with me, Kayla Chalko. In this video, I show how to do speech therapy with toddlers at home. I coach the parent on how to help her late talker learn new words and play skills. This little boy is 15 months old and learns very quickly. These are clips from his first one-hour session.

I liked this video simply because you were so transparent about how little a toddlers attention span is, so many KZbin videos make it seem as though something is wrong if you can’t sit your toddler down for an hour a day reading and learning. I like many FTM get sucked into these unrealistic expectations of what it should be, when in reality they edited out all the times the child lost interest. It took me a while to get out of that train of thought and use common sense and realize that I have a toddler and toddlers can’t and won’t sit still to look at flash cards for an hour.

I'm finding your videos extremely helpful. So clear and thorough and I appreciate you sharing your knowledge and information. I have a 30 month old who was screened today and is going for further detailed assessment and diagnosis of asd but the consultant seemed to think he definitely has sensory processing disorder. He doesn't lack social skills or eye contact but does have a significant speech and language delay. Developmentally is behind his peers. Doesn't exactly play appropriately with toys, in fact doesn't really notice them but he will play with objects rather than toys. Can do pretend play no problem. Actually seems to enjoy it and can initiate it. From watching your videos on red flags I'd say he has some red flags from all 3 of your videos but majority of them he doesn't have. Would it be possible for you to make a video on sensory processing disorder and what is it in relation to Autism? Also could you define what exactly non verbal means? I understand at his age he should have approximately 350 to 450 words. I actually complied a list of all the words I've ever heard him say including words like "the and you" etc. And he has spoken approximately 100 to 150 words but on a regular daily basis he definitely would not be using anywhere near this amount of words. What should I consider non verbal? At his age and his ability to speak would you think he would ever be able to talk properly? I do have a speech therapist and have been following he exercises but haven't seen an improvement since the initial few weeks and on the consultants advice today we are going to get occupational therapy. I would truly appreciate your precious advice/opinion on this. I'm living in Ireland and there is a huge lack of help or information on anything like this. Thanks.
@WalkieTalkieSpeechTherapy
@WalkieTalkieSpeechTherapy 7 жыл бұрын
zeehundred100 zeehundred100 Hello! Thank you for reaching out from Ireland! I will add sensory processing disorder to the list of future topics. Your occupational therapist will specialize in that and can help you directly. It does effect speech in the sense that if a child is disregulated, learning new things is more difficult. “Nonverbal” is used most frequently with children with Autism and is used without a clear definition. Usually they mean that the child is not speaking or speaks but does not use words in a consistent or meaningful way that is directed to people to get their wants and needs met or to socialize. If your child has about 100-150 words then that is a great start! Your speech therapist can help expand that and help the child learn to use speech in a meaningful and consistent way. Progress can be slow, especially at the beginning. For some children many months before measurable change occurs. Keep the faith! Keep watching our KZbin channel, subscribe, and share with people you know! Thanks and take care!

I live in abroad and we speak 4 languages at home (we are unable to stick to one language because the grandparents cannot speak English -- one set speaks mostly Kazakh and occasionally Russian while the other speaks Japanese), which I feel has contributed to my 25m old twins speech delay because it really is a big jumbled mess! They also started daycare where the employees speak Russian/Kazakh, and if we do go to speech therapy it would most likely be in Russian which really isn't helpful for me as I have a less than basic understanding of the language. The twins will babble and imitate some words in English and they can follow directions if they're in a good mood, they just don't really say anything or string words together. I just came across this video and am hoping to work with them using some of these techniques. Do you have any tips?

I'm just wondering, has this child learned a word in this one session? My son whos 20 months uses only certain words ("that", "book", "mama") and that would be the majority. But.. he's great at following commands for example "get in your highchair" ,"where's your ba ba", "close the door" and honestly tons of others im wondering after trying as many options as possible maybe when to expect progress. I know all children differ but maybe a ball park time frame Thanks this was very helpful -AN
@WalkieTalkieSpeechTherapy
@WalkieTalkieSpeechTherapy 6 жыл бұрын
Hi! Yes the child learned the word "Go!" He was a fast learner. It is difficult to say what kind of progress to expect because it depends on how delayed the child was and how much time is being put in to working on speech and language. Hopefully you have him in speech therapy and will be seeing progress soon.

Whenever they feel that the people they're familiar with are close to them, then it would be an okay, most of the time (not all. As different house, different treatments coming from the family members) The most important thing kids this age need is feeling safe, and the people living together with them should provide that "safety feeling" strong before letting the kids meet strangers.

He has speech delay and starts living with our family (my mom and dad) when he was 2 years old. i have opportunity to do activities just like what the therapist did and he can speak now! It just takes some times and works. Never give up if your child cant speak and never neglect if your child is "not like other child". It is better to take early action.

How old was the baby in this vid when it was recorded? My currently 29month old is a bit slow in speech im thinking maybe because of biligualism but he does love throwing ball back and forth. Easily loses interest tho and finds new things to do. His favorite is watching things soin. Fans, dryer etc. Loves clicking on every little buttons and switches that has cause and effect i.e lights household items that makes noise, air purifier, u name it. Has a hard time sitting down and wait for me to read him something, he rather goes for the book himself and flips the pages and dont usually let me read to him. He makes it clear to me he wants to go downstairs to see the dryer/washer by making sound they produce and pulling my hands. Hes obsessed with it. But once it satisfy, he will without fuss follow me back upstairs for other things. Help

I really like all the different activities that you show. I really appreciate you putting this out here for parents. What I don't understand is why the therapist uses more slurred "baby talk" at times. Using words correctly with good diction seems like it would teach correct language and pronunciation better. What are your thoughts on that?

Hi! Thanks for watching. Baby talk is a way of engaging the child with a sing-song voice. As child ages and becomes more verbal, the therapist will adjust how she talks to the child.

My son is 22 months and hardly says anything. I have 3 girls who spoke in small sentences when they turned 2. I’m trying not to compare but I’m also trying not to miss the cues of any problem. I know he can hear. I taught him “hi Dad” at 7 months and then nothing from there.. And the very few words he says (Mama, car, bus, stop) are clear. The rest is complete gibberish. He has no interest in imitating me. I’m debating about going to the doctor. ?
