The 16 Steps with brief explanations:
kayanupassana - Observe each breath
1. Observe deep breathing
2. Observe shallow breathing
3. Observe how breathing controls your emotions e.g. deep breathing causes happiness, peacefulness, and tranquility while shallow one causes unwholesome thoughts and ill intentions
4. Observe breathing becoming quieter and much more delicate. During this stage practitioner may feel their body becoming much lighter and new sensations as your breathing returns to the natural state
Vethananupassana - Observe emotions
5. Observe Piti (Intense Joy), recognize that it originated from the state of tranquility
6. Observe Sukkha (Soothing Happiness), recognize that it was transformed from Piti as the excitement goes away.
7. Observe all emotions as they occur, recognize how they control your subconscious mind
8. Observe emotions becoming less active and eventually
dissipated, recognize that you are on the right path
3. jittanupassana - Observe the mind
9. Observe the mind, closely examine its characteristics e.g. is it feeling any cravings or deep desires (for any kinds of satisfaction, be it material, love, recognition, etc.)?
10. Observe the mind enjoying Dhamma by focusing on the act of enjoying, as you will by now have control of the subconscious mind
11. Observe the mind being fully under your control
12. Observe the mind setting itself free, by giving up its identities that have been built up from emotions over the course of your life
4. Dhammanupassana (Vipassana Meditation) - Observe true nature of all things
13. Observe the impermanent nature of all things that have come to pass, emphasis on how breathing controls emotions and emotions control mind (the previous 12 steps). Essentially everything happens in your mind and nothing is the same forever
14. Observe the desires and cravings dissipating as a result of seeing impermanence result of seeing impermanence.
15. Observe the mind freeing itself from all controls
towards Niravana,
recognize that the goal is Nirvana
16. Observe all Dhamma concerning tangible/worldly things being completely expunged from the mind.
