Another method, if you're not good at this dodge is to use Vow of Indomitable skill on your shield. - Activate once when she starts rush at you with Waterfowl. Do this and hold Guard button as well 'cause her attack is longer than your skill. - As she pause her attack for the second waves slash, activate the Vow of Indomitable skill a second time. - For the third waves slash is the easiest. You just move opposite of her direction by walking. Her damage will be minimal that it looks silly and she won't regain much health from you

So now, in NG+, im doing it no armor and no summons, and I've probably died at least 50 times and got to the second phase like 10 percent of the time, but it's so much more fun.

@@buuu29 I for myself also prefer melee builds and never really used summons other than at release before noticing very quickly that even the weakest summons give you a massive edge. After some dozen playthroughs I'm finally comfortable with malenia, its just a lot of running around and baiting to get a safe hit in. I guess fighting malenia in a randomizer inside a medium sized catacomb boss room made me also learn her. There's just no where to run. Just keep at it. you can do it ^^ If you are up for more playthrough Ideas I'd recommend keeping the stat distribution of starting classes. I also self imposed the rule of keeping the starting gear but I think staying in the same weapon classes etc. would also be fun and spice things up. Created a table just so I could calculate the level ups for all classes. Currently on my 7th run like that. Bandit was a Pain though :D

You can actually evade the first flurry without locking off with just medium roll. I do it all the time and no not with bloodhound step. It's similar to what you do however you strafe towards her side while locked on then dodge behind her twice the moment she lunges. Well done though.

That is not true at all. The majority of my 123 deaths to Malenia on my first playthrough were from attacks OTHER than waterfowl dance. Her speed, aggression, and complex AI also make her hard and fun to fight, besides Waterfowl.

Lock on is badly designed in general, it screws you over on large bosses more often than not and for enemies that dash around you it's good luck knowing what the cameras doing.

you can do similar movement locked on. This dodge was likely not intended to begin with, though... I think they wanted players to outspace it or use tools like shields/BHS/vow of the indomitable. For outspacing though the move is way overtuned, has so much forward momentum that it's extremely hard to be out of range in time

It's bad camera design, through and through. The developers should've programmed the camera to pan out the moment WFD (or other wide range/back-and-forth moves) is about to come out, but there is no dynamic camera in this game. The same issue crops up with Fire Giant, Elden Beast, Placidusax and Malekith.

@@dahlinvesek I think I figured out how to do it with lock-on. It's complicated, because it depends on the camera movement. The most ideal situation is that you do nothing when and after she rise up. Wait for a little moment, then start sprinting, when you you see her turning around quickly and hear a sound like wind-blow, you press your dodge button. Then you should make it.

If you do that, the camera position will move and you get hit. And try not to use long-lasting attack such as Carian Grandeur or jump heavy attack of colossal sword. It's not necessary to lock off at all to dodge it, if you lock on and just strafe left or right (without running) you can trigger the AI to attack behind you. the unlocked circling is kinda troublesome for us mouse/Kb players, i just lock on, get close, hold W and A until she starts the flurry and then roll, beat her in a flawless rl 1 run using this. And for the 2nd flurry, you can just roll to the back to have a much more forgiving roll window.

this is unnecessarily complicated, what I do is 1) run away for the first flurry 2) dodge right through before second flurry 3) dodge by tilting the movement stick to the upper right (1:30 on the clock) before third part 4) attack with something quick / run a bit away and cast a ranged spell/heal

So you have to make sure you have enough health for those. But it's the easiest way to avoid the damage and skill requirement needed to dodge it without a shield.

Might be because the circle you're making is too large. You quite literally have to be wrapping around the invisible wall that's below her. If you make a full circle and roll straight twice (like in the vid), you should be able to dodge. I've seen some people keep the lock-on and sprint-circle to her left, and then rolling left at the last possible moment. It seemed easier. Maybe try that if you don't have any luck. You can use a freezing pot to immediately get her out of the Waterfowl Dance, but you have to be quick about it. Probably the easiest and the most reliable method (at least for the first Waterfowl) is to use a knife (or dart, probably not Kukri). After her health's below 70% and you throw it at her, unless she was doing something prior, she will IMMEDIATELY use the Waterfowl Dance. Space it out accordingly. Most of these guys are pros that practice runs in advance, for tens of hours at the minimum, often with cheats activated to maximize the effectivity of the practice session. It's much easier to pick up the timing when you have god mode activated.

Might be because the circle you're making is too large. You quite literally have to be wrapping around the invisible wall that's below her. If you make a full circle and roll straight twice (like in the vid), you should be able to dodge. I've seen some people keep the lock-on and sprint-circle to her left, and then rolling left at the last possible moment. It seemed easier. Maybe try that if you don't have any luck. You can use a freezing pot to immediately get her out of the Waterfowl Dance, but you have to be quick about it. Probably the easiest and the most reliable method (at least for the first Waterfowl) is to use any throwable (knife ideally). After her health's below 70% and you throw it at her, unless she was doing something prior, she will IMMEDIATELY use the Waterfowl Dance. Space it out accordingly.
