How to Downgrade Skyrim AE to Skyrim SSE in 2024

EDIT: The old version of Downgrade patcher works for going from 1.6.640 to 1.5.97 if you manually downgraded from 1.6.1170 to 1.6.640 via download_depot. This will fix the Skyrim - Patch.bsa not recognized filetype error. To Clarify, you need to download the old files version of the patcher on nexus specifically for 1.6.640 to 1.5.97 and use that **after** you've manually downloaded and replaced files with the download_depot for 640.

My Skyrim Pre AE, decided to upgrade to latest. Found this tutorial after the downgrader patch would not work (with the new update), did what you said, and all is back to normal, you Sir are doing Gods work, STEAM should allow the auto updater to be turned off, like it used to allow, and Bethesda should stop updating a 8 year old game, Either way I thank you. I'm currently in the boat of just getting back into Skyrim after a 3 year break and with my luck i seem to have jumped in at a bad time. A couple of new updates has the modding community in shambles with bethesda's typical bs. And alot of people's save's seem to be nuked. I'm thinking of downgrading to 1.5.97 but since i have never done anything like it i wonder, how do i know which mods support it? Isn't it going to be a real hassle of trying to figure out which mods support which version etc. And does even all the "major" almost required mods like skyui, papyrus, net framework etc work for it?

Yeah it's annoying but most of the mods you could want exist for both versions so it just takes a bit of sorting. The major differences between them are mostly that the Anniversary Edition update comes with a couple of Bethesda Approved* free creator club mods. The main reason I switched from OldRim to SSE was because of the multiplayer mod not supporting OldRim. If you want to go back before AE then just use the download_depot commands for going back to 1.6.640, as shown in the video, and then use the old version of the downgrade patcher from nexus to go from 1.6.640 to 1.5.97. Once the downgrade patcher is up to date you can skip the download_depot step if you'd rather wait for that, but by downloading it once you'll have it archived for any future updates that break the game. I have 300 mummified mods. I managed to get the list to work but it didn't pull the skse for some part of the mods, I tried with all the 2023 skse but it only recognizes the one from the downgrade, thanks for the help but there is no one to fix this, not to mention that you have to take out the excel if you want to add something else, the amount of complications and tail-playing of Mr. Tood is impressive. Every time I see a new Bethesda game or I want to buy one that I don't have I think about my mummified list, and the desire passes .

No problems, just redo it with the correct ones. Just exit steam, start steam, run the correct Depot commands (I recommend 1.6.640) and then once they finish you go to the content folder and copy the files inside of the depot downloads to overwrite the files in your Skyrim SE Directory.

I feel like it isn't so bad. Just type some commands in, wait a few hours, move some files, and run the old version of the patcher. Plus if you've done the first step before then you can skip it in the future because you'll still have the old files.

hey so im trying to install some mods on MO2 (eg. Cutting Room Floor and Alternate Start), but i can't install them because they are missing the Fishing CC master. and when i go into the CC section in the main menu i can't access it while downgraded to 1.5.97. so when i try to launch the game with CRF and AS the game CTDs. i really want to use these mods but cant because i dont have the fishing master. please help

If they require the Fishing CC then they are not compatible with 1.5.97. Try finding a version, usually in the older files section on the nexus, of the mods that does work with 1.5.97, alternative start has one for sure (I use it myself) but idk about cutting room floor. When you play Skyrim with mods you have to choose between 1.5.97 and later versions, you can't have mods from both.

ok, so I downgrade from 1.6.117 to .1.5.97 immediately, and my game won't launch past logo even tho it says ( product version 1.5.97 ) in Skyrim.exe properties did I miss things up? I tried every fix/mod in nexus and it didn't work if so how do I go back to 1.6.117 so I can Downgrade properly

AFAIK there is no single step method to downgrade directly to 1.5.97 until the Downgrade Patcher gets an update, usually you would first use the steam console and file replacement method to downgrade to 1.6.640 and then use the Downgrade Patcher specifically for 1.6.640 to 1.5.97 (NOT a higher version, only the old version of patcher for 1.6.640 to 1.5.97 would work) What methods did you use? Does the downgrade patcher say it failed to downgrade a specific bsa file? Returning to 1.6.1170 is as simple as verifying files with steam, or if that doesn't work reinstallation with steam.

okay so I need your help with something i used best of both 1.6.640.0-1.5.97.0 and since the new updated broke everything I reverted back to 1.6.640.0 but the best of both patcher isn't working and i need those files from 1.5.97.0 without fully reverting to 1.5.97.0 because it will just break other mods please help me

I fixed my skyrim I used the depot commands got it back to 1.6.640.0 then the best of both 1.6.640.0-1.5.97.0 decided to work @@JonesCrimson​

Let me know if you followed these exact steps: 1. Use the Download_Depot commands to go specifically to 1.6.640, and wait for steam console to say download complete on all 3 2. Copy the content from the 3 Download_Depot directories to overwrite files in Skyrim Special Edition directory. Not regular Skyrim btw, they have different folders if you own both games. 3. Run the OLD VERSION of the downgrade patcher specifically for 1.6.640 to 1.5.97, newer versions will NOT work. If yes, then please send me some of the error in the Patcher's text, like which file it stopped at.

Thank you I hadn't noticed that the last 1 was just 24 mb compared to 4000+ on the other 2 it had already made folders for all three so I had did the same thing I assume when just dragging and dropping the not fully downloaded folders

This just seems like so much hassle to downgrade now which is still pointless since most mods are updated anyway and 1.5.9 is basically abandoned. I think I'll just not bother and wait it out until I can run nolvus and they have sorted everything out for me XD

It's kind of about keeping access to the old mods available. Mods made for 1.5.97 will always be available, but the same mods for the newer versions might not be. If you use the download depot commands then you'll have those files stored in the content folder forever and never have to wait for the patcher or other mods to update again.
