I tried the skirt last week and it fits like a glove. Perfect! I am a beginner and struggled with the lining so it took me a little longer to sew but it came out very nice! I will definitely make it again but without attaching the lining to the hem.
@GraceyStitches11 ай бұрын
I’m happy to hear this, especially from a beginner. This proves that my tutorials are beginner-friendly!💃 You did a good job 👏 . Lining takes more time and skills but of course, with consistent practise, you’ll master it in no time. And yes, you do not have to attach them at the hem if you don’t want it all closed up. In fact, that’s easier. Just ensure that the length of the lining is at least 3” shorter than the main length of your skirt. Thanks for the review

Thank you! One more question. Can I combine this skirt with your bodice tutorial to make a dress? Should I eliminate the step where you depress the waist by 1/2 inch in the front when doing a dress?

@@raquelm8655 No. When joining the bodice to the skirt, don’t skip that step. You still have to depress the waist of the skirt. However, you may need to adjust your darts so that they’ll align.

@GraceyStitches5 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, I do not have a video on trousers at the moment. However, your best bet for measuring the crotch is to first find your natural waist and tie a rope or tape around it then option 1 - sit on a hard surface chair and measure from your side waist down the chair OR option 2 - stand up straight and measure from your front waist line through your crotch to the back waist line - divide the answer by 2, subtract 1.5" to get the front crotch and add 1.5" to get the back crotch.

@GraceyStitches3 жыл бұрын
Hello. I'm glad you like the skirt tutorial. Please try it out. Regarding the bodice, I do not allocate more to the front than the back. All we need for the front bodice is an adequate 'cup' to accommodate the bust and luckily, the front has 2 darts FROM DIFFERRENT DIRECTIONS to help us achieve that cup effect (waist & bust dart)...although we can add up to 2 darts on the skirt to get the bum effect as well... I recently started a series on how to draft different bodice pattern. You can start from here kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZbUmZuoaK6YrKc for the bodice pattern or here kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZK4ZJmXjJ15b80 if you want to know more about measurements too.

Thanks for this tutorial...but pls if I want to add a band do I remove 2" from the vertical measurements. Because I didn't see you add band
@GraceyStitches3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome. The skirt is bandless hence i didn't include a band in the tutorial. For a high waist skirt (close to your underbust) , add your 2 inches band above what you already drafted. But if you want the skirt to be exactly on your waist line (the one you measured), draft your skirt as illustrated. Use a masking tape to close up your darts, cut out 2" from the top part, use that pattern to construct your band while the tape is still holing the dart. You can remove the tape from the other part of the skirt before you cut your fabric. Remember to add your joining allowances at the top part and on the band.

@GraceyStitches3 жыл бұрын
Hi. I used the hips measurement at the hem (10.25"). Where the waist is bigger, you can also allocate more to the front waist than the back waist. Also, using a stretchy fabric in that case won't be a bad idea.

Thanks for this very well detailed tutorial. Please have you included the band to the skirt length?
@GraceyStitches4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the compliment. No, I didn't include the band in the length of this skirt pattern because I was going to use it to make a high waist skirt (NB - Usually, I use 2" as my band height.) This pattern is just the foundation for a skirt. If you want a high waist skirt, draft this pattern (with your measurements) first, then cut out your band separately. But if you want a regular skirt length, draft this pattern, then cut out 2" from the top part of the pattern and use it to construct your band and then reattach it to the skirt. Don't forget to add seam allowance all around the band and the top of the skirt. I hope my explanation was clear❤

@@level2456 Yes, you can include the ease allowance from the go. Just note it on your pattern, if you're drafting one, so that you won't forget what you added next time you use the same block. I'd advise an ease allowance of 0.25" on fold (making 1" in total after sewing). Here: for example if your front hips is 18", that will be 18"/2 = 9" + 0.25" = 9.25"

@@GraceyStitches Thanks a lot. You are very helpful....And the sewing allowance? Can i add it, without having to include it later? For instance have front waist as w/4+dart+sewing allowance, instead of w/4+dart and add sewing allowance later. Sorry for being a nuisance 🙆♂️
@GraceyStitches2 жыл бұрын
@@level2456 Oh yes, since you're drafting directly on your fabric, you can include everything at the first instance. w/4+dart+ease+sewing allowance. Ensure you note your seam allowance so that you can take in the correct allowance while sewing.

Nice one thanks. But when joining it on the sides the back may not align with the front
@GraceyStitches3 жыл бұрын
No, it will definitely align because the same vertical measurement was used for both tthe front and the back. Notch the hip line on both patterns before you start to sew.

@@GraceyStitches I am talking about when you are closing with final measurements... The back might be a little wider than the front panel. Except maybe one adjust from the zip allowance area. I don't know how to explain here But thanks sis I appreciate

Thanks for this tutorial MA.. Please how do I join the sides together? Because the sides of the back is bigger than the front
@GraceyStitches3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching I get this question a lot. But sincerely, it is the same way you join your skirts. Right sides of the front facing the right side of the back. Sew the sides and then the zipper. I think I should do a tutorial on that

This is really beautiful, Thank you so much for this detailed tutorial. Just came across your page. Trying it out now but I have a question ⁉️ please after cutting and sewing,how will i take my hips measurement since the front and back are different. Should I divide by 4 and also am making a pencil skirt, the front and back are not same,how will I join them. Thank you
@GraceyStitches4 жыл бұрын
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching About the hips, take your hips measurement normally (that is, round your hips ) and then use the formula that I mentioned in the video The sewing is also very easy. These are the steps that I follow: 1. Firstly, I iron my zipper allowance by folding it inward. The crease it forms serves as a guide when I am fixing the zipper. 2. I join the back pieces. I start sewing from about 2" above where the zipper would stop and then I sew straight down to the hem of the skirt or I stop where the slit will start (if the skirt will have a slit) 3. I fix the zipper. I use the crease that my iron has formed as a guide (see step 1) 4. I join the front piece to the back piece then I open up the seam allowances by ironing them. 5. I fix the band and lastly, 6. I hem the skirt I hope this was helpful❤

@@GraceyStitches Thank you very much for your quick response but am asking about taking The final measurements considering the fact that i remove 1 inch from the front
@GraceyStitches4 жыл бұрын
@@nancythompson5423 oh! You mean after cutting and sewing? You know what? If your draft is right then the outcome will be right as long as you cut your fabric on the right grain. But if you still want to measure after sewing, just measure round the hip line of the skirt, you should get your total hips

Hi I hope you see this I’m a fashion designer and I started having issues when making skirt for people who have a hip of 46/47 etc but their hip bone isn’t protruding just bigger bum and this make the hip part of the skirt loose will this method work for people with large hip measurements and no protruding hip bone just rounder and more protruding back side🙏🙏🙏
@GraceyStitches3 жыл бұрын
Hello. Of course, I read all my messages.❤ and I completely understand your description. Now, let's go back to the video. At about 15:00, I mentioned that you should measure 0.5" or 1" outside the zipper allowance right? Okay. So, where your client has an obviously bigger bum than hips like you have described, you should go into the zipper allowance by 1" NOT 0.5" (irrespective of the difference between the waist and the hips measurement). That's about the only way that we can allocate more to the bum area. There are other methods like slash and spread anyway but that's used where the bum is really big or you are working with huge plus-sizes.

Hello ma, thanks for this tutorial. Can we use this method when making the “skirt part” of a gown?
@GraceyStitches4 жыл бұрын
Definitely ! Please go ahead. Your result will be perfect. As long as the dress has a fitted skirt part, this is what I use. Even for A-line skirts, I use this pattern. I just transfer the darts to make it wider at the hem

Thanks so much for taking your time to explain this video. You've just remove a burden from me now. My question is each time I draft a skirt for a person with big Buttocks the back length is always shorter. What can I do to eliminate that.? Thanks as I await your response
@GraceyStitches3 жыл бұрын
Hello. When the skirt is shorter at the back, this means the bum size is more than average and it needs more room. So, what we do is this: slash and spread at the back hip line. This increases the length of the back and also gives a nice fit.
