This video helped me improve so much! I have been interested in drawing horses for years and could never get the body right or the head for that matter. One I watched this it helped me understand the anatomy and shapes of a horse. Thank you so much!

Horse hooves are made out of the same material as our hair and finger nails, keratin. In the wild, horses would travel for miles in herds through rough terrain. This is why mustangs tend to have such hardy hooves- they are used to it. On the other hand, breeds such as the Thoroughbred suffer tremendously from hoof issues because their hoof care isn't taken into account when breeding- their speed is more important for the breeds purpose. There are documented undercover cases of Thoroughbreds being raced despite their hooves painfully falling apart and being practically glued together. And that's only a crumb of the abuse that goes on, unfortunately. Imagine someone who is barefoot in the woods all day- they are going to have calloused, tough feet like a mustang. Now compare that to someone like a Thoroughbred who walks around their carpets and hardwood floors barefoot all day. Horse shoes were invented to keep the horse elevated off of the ground. Back in the day, people were wondering why their horses hooves were rotting. Well, they had taken the horses and corralled/stalled them up and the horses would have to walk over the same areas they were going to the bathroom (whereas in the wild they would be traveling away from their waste- something that predators track them through). They couldn't escape mud from rain because they were fenced in. Horses were generally being kept on ground that was much softer than what they were used to. So blocking their ability to travel had them standing in moisture and bacteria and all sorts of nasty, which softened and infected their hooves. Giving the horse shoes elevated their hooves off of the ground and offered more support/structure for the hoof. It also helped avoid chips and splits in the hoof, and bruising of the frog located under the hoof. However, we now know that horse shoes cause issues for the horse, unfortunately. They restrict blood flow and flexation, cause impact damage to the joints, and an otherwise nonlethal kick could unintentionally seriously harm or kill a pasture mate. Shoes can also get caught on objects, leading to dangerous situations. Many horses require shoes for medical reasons, but a healthy horse won't require shoes.
