Trust a woodworker to come up with easiest way to create a parabolic curve. Ive spent hours trying to find a video i could understand where the presenter didnt just brush over important information but made overly sure they used every algebraic equation they possible could to sound smart for the viewers. Thankyou sir. Liked and subscribed due to your simplistic straight to the point no B.S lesson which actually showed me what i needed to know. 😊

This is KISS brilliance, I was expecting a ton of math, but the minute you said with a framing square I understood the idea. Awesome, TY!

You have the best method for demonstrating how this works. I was able to easily create one in cinema4d and after effects. now i will make one using just after effects. You just need a line and a variable focus area as null object. As the line moves to the left driven by another null object. The line is targeted to look at the focus null causing it to rotate. A quick animation and in after effects use an echo FX to show all frames at once and wallah. I also notice all parabolic are basically the same shape. Its just scaling and clipping that's proportional to focal point.

This is a very good demonstration. You are a very good geometry teacher. I am going to build a large T square with 2 x 4 lumber. Instead I will build a (1-1-sqrt of 2) or a (3-4-5) triangle and use it as a T square to built a parabola. My goal is to build a parabolic solar cooker. I would like to build one slice of it and assemble multiple slices to make the dome. Thanks you for the video.

Merci

Thank you! This is brilliant! For a solar trough, how far up above and out from the focal point do we need to draw? (so that we reflect as much of the sun's rays as possible). For your 6.5 inch focal point you used paper that was 32 inches wide. Did you just run out of paper or is that the correct width for a 6.5 inch focal point? Thanks! John

Much better than my video. It would be nice if you would also show how to fit parabolas into any rectangle for those with limited resources, or ,of course longer focus parabolas.

I still like the focus and directrix method.
@JohnSmith-pc3gc Жыл бұрын
Making the parabola out of flat segments prevents the focus from focusing to a more dangerously hot and bright point. Light from solar collectors can cause near instant permanent blindness and third degree burns. Without knowing any of the geometry of the parabola exceot for the focus, the exact points for the segments can be determined. Draw a circle that is the diameter of the collector pipe at the required position. Grade the surface with vertical lines that are separated by the diameter of the collector pipe that are tangent to the left and right of the circle. Cut out a bar of wood or cardboard that is the width of the collector pipe diameter and the length of half the width of the collector mirror. The end points of the flat segments in the collector mirror can be determined by putting the bar over the circle so that it is tangent to the inside of the circle and swiveling the bar to see where it intersects the vertical lines. Align the left edge of the bar with the point where the first segment of the mirror is to begin along the line tangent to the right of the circle. Mark the point where the right edge intersects the next vertical line. Swivel the bar so that the left edge intersects this marked point. Mark another point where the right edge intersects the next vertical line etc. If the dimensions of the circle and the bar and the spacing of the vertical lines is a little smaller than the actual diameter of the collector pipe, it allows for small errors in alignment with the collector mirror.

Thank you very much for your ridiculously simple an elegant method of drawing a parabola. I have searched for a simple method to draw a parabola with a given distance of the focal point from the vertex and your method was the only one offered. Is the parabola obtained in this way a true geometric parabola or is it an approximation? Any way thank you for posting this most useful piece of practical information.
@oliveirao.72805 жыл бұрын
Friend, this method is accurate. It is not an approximation, you can trust.
@speedbuggy16v3 жыл бұрын
I would say it is an approximation, it is only accurate at the exact points the lines are derived from, BUT, it is very close, and the more points you add the more accurate it becomes. The reality is that the 200Lb gorilla with the belt sander is likely the sticking point on how accurate it is. In the end the way he did it, is probably at a minimum of 95% mathematically correct assuming the gorilla has any skill and eyesight! In other words, this is EXACTLY how I will be building my solar collector for my greenhouse.

Is this an ellipse or a parabola? Is there any way to check the directrix? Thank you.
@tarbucktransom2 жыл бұрын
The only way I can think to check the directrix is to use the framing square, tangent, and focus to find the axis, then set a pair of dividers from the focus to somewhere on the parabola and then swing that measure straight down parallel to the axis, then adjust the framing square along the axis until it meets the point you marked with the dividers. If you already have the parabola though, I can't think of what to do with the directrix. Why do you want it?
@atjthe2nd6 ай бұрын
the directrix is equal distance from the focus to the vertex. In this case he used a 6-1/2" focus point so the directrix should be 6-1/2" below the straight edge.

using the vertical center line (ie 6-1/2" inches) you can raise or lower the focus point (the nail).

the simple answer is to replace the word inch with the word UNIT. The Unit can be anything you choose (e.g. 1 cm, 8 cm, the short side of your dollar bill,...) 🤭
