What do you struggle with when it comes to drawing portraits? Let me know so I can make more helpful videos in the future :)

Very helpful video! I’m a complete novice, but love to try and draw portraits. I bounce around to different areas of the face like you, and then focus on the eyes-the most difficult part.

You can do it! Takes a lot of practice though. I plan to do a bunch more videos with portraits. More to come.

ya know, i've tried drawing for like years. Drawing is one of those skills I believe I can not grasp. I will never grasp, it will take decades upon decades of learning. So, why would I? I won't see progress. Even more, I *want* to draw, but I can't. I do not have the interest enough. I will always hit the point of: "I'm done, I will go back to something that actually I can kind of do.". I am convinced that if I tried maybe 7 years ago, i'd be somewhat competent. But of course not. When I was 9 or 12, something like that, I could hardly draw simple squares representing a person, and gave up. So, I don't know what to do and am pretty much asking for advice.

To be honest, I'm not sure what advice to give when you already have your mind made up that you will never grasp it, won't see progress, say you can't do it, and lack the interest to draw. If I said the same thing about learning piano or something like that, I'm not sure what advice a piano teacher could give to help me. The student has to have the interest and the will to want to do it, otherwise I don't think there's any stronger advice or motivation that will ultimately keep them going. Anytime they struggle, they'll fall back to their negative thoughts and the motivation wears off. I would suggest having a goal or some kind of purpose - something you can fall back on - to keep you going through the struggle of learning to draw. I'm not sure what else I can suggest at this moment.

You learned to write by making shapes on paper! you CAN do it! Don't give up yet! You have to really want to though. I spent 50 years of life believing I couldn't draw. Just one year ago I decided to just 'show up' every day with pen/pencil and paper. I watched an inspirational video by 'Danny Gregory' - a short animated film (approx 10 mins long) called 'the artist who couldn't draw'. The message was inspirational and I've never stopped drawing since. I draw and sketch, just for me with no stake in the outcome. By showing up every day, some times only ten minutes or so I reached the conclusion just a few days ago: I CAN DRAW!!! I love Brandon's tutorial's and his honest and humble approach to his art tutorials.... if you decide to 'show up every day', I would suggest you show up here :) Good luck!
