You inspire to start drawing again & I love that you don't use grid lines. I've always loved the "freedom" of drawing & grid lines don't give me that. Thx Wei for all your great tutorials!

+Berta Barbosa That's good to hear Berta. Yeah, art is suppose to be enjoyable. No use grinding through grids=). Though a simple grid is helpful at times. Just not those crazy 20x20 grids that you do in some colleges.

This is why I like watching you because you keep it simple. And I'm not into hyper realisam either, if I want it exactly like the photo then just take a photo.

The elegance of your technique is astonishing, Wei! Great didactic too. Would you consider portrait Sade Adu, one of these days?
@ArtofWeiHo8 жыл бұрын
+Fier Luciano Thanks Fier. And you made me look up the word didactic=). Haha, learn something new everyday I tell ya. Sade, wow, haven't heard her name for a long time. Thanks for your suggestion.

Really nice, Wei. What impresses me most is how you do the whole thing with a 4B. I'm always so afraid of going too dark too soon, so I start with an H and end up using HB, B, 2B, and 4B. Probably way more than I need, but I don't have your confidence with the pencil.
@ArtofWeiHo8 жыл бұрын
+Todd Prepsky Well, if I were doing this off camera, I would drawing more details with the 2B and even HB first. But that takes too long especially for a video. So I just use the 4B. It's faster but you end up making more mistakes=).

Good job with this one. Very enjoyable video and the tips you give are very helpful. The final version came closer to the picture, but I think the only part that is slightly different than the picture is her mouth and this might make it somewhat difficult to recognize immediately who it is. Despite that, it is beautiful portrait. What I find interesting in most videos is how the finished image is so different compared to the one we see live on the video? Is the reason behind this that the image was scanned and that increased the contrast? it makes it much easier to notice the details.
@ArtofWeiHo8 жыл бұрын
+cartoon80s90s Yeah, there's a lot of little mistakes along the way. Also, I've found her expression hard to capture, especially when it's so subtle. The final drawing is modified in Photoshop. Mainly to make it look better as the lighting on the video makes the drawing dull. Especially on graphite, areas gets washed out by the lighting. Thanks for your comment.

I would have loved to see the final shading of the details! Thanks for the video, it was very helpful :) I really like the sketcky look you talk about, it gives a lot of life to the drawing.

+Carla T Thanks Carla, yeah, I like the sketchy look too.
@toddcercone67158 жыл бұрын
+Carla T I feel that Wei's sketchy style is more artistic, and more beautiful than a "finished" piece. When one draws photo-realistic it loses interest to me.

Although the measurements are a little bit off, it still looks like her. And you know what? Sometimes it is good to let us see masters like you make mistakes, kind of making us feel not so inferior! LOL!
@ArtofWeiHo8 жыл бұрын
+jieyi liang I'm not a master but I definitely make mistakes. It's very difficult to draw free hand portrait and have great likeness. That's why professionals trace=).

I'd say the doting around principle for drawing, is the same as it is for sculpture, in that moving around the work stops over emphasis & tedium. Also it's very handy for problem solving i.e working out tonal contrasts and shapes.

What pencil do you use in this tutorial?
@toddcercone67158 жыл бұрын
