I enjoyed this very much. Traditional Technical drawing, on A3 or A2 paper, with 3H and 4H pencils, NEVER HB!, wooden T squares and acrylic set squares, was my absolute favourite lesson in school. Great to refresh my mind on techniques such as these. Try as I might I could never get my compass accuracy to perfectly complete the circle back to the origin. Great fun though.

@CogitoErgoCogitoSum Actually, a heptadecagon (17 sides) *can* be constructed classically. (It's *very* complicated!) What he's attempting here, is a heptagon (7 sides), which cannot. This is, however, a pretty decent approximation, good for most practical purposes. Fred

@CogitoErgoCogitoSum The subtleties seem lost unfortunately. I would argue that if the construction isn't exact then the heptagon isn't a regular heptagon. . There's a wonderful book called Ruler and Compass. It explains the subject far better than I can.

To put it in other terms, the side-length of a regular heptagon in a unit circle is s =2 sin(180º/7) = 0.867767478... while the length used here is s' = ½√3 = 0.866025404... The ratio is s'/s = 0.997992... So it's short by a mere part in 500. Fred

It doesn't work. To the natural human eye it looks as if he has constructed an exact regular heptagon. But he has not and it can be proven. It is convincing to the eye, but the mathematics says otherwise.

I "discovered" another method by kind of reverse-engineering a regular heptagon and finding some relationships between the lines and I think it works, but I'm too lazy to try and prove it now (I think I'll have to use some basic trigonometry, but I'm in the 8th grade, so that's not happening). The only thing I know is that I didn't need to inscribe the heptagon in a circle to do it. Edit: the side lenght I used is arbitrary, but corresponds to about 2.95cm, so you have a sense for the scale, and I did not have a noticeable difference of inner angles from an actual heptagon. 2nd edit: I used some pithagorean theorem and quickly learned about sines and cosines and what not and it turns out my method isn't perfect as well, but I had a difference of about 0.11 degrees from the inner angle of a regular heptagon, so that's cool. Last edit: I just proved my method completely stupid and wrong just by measuring some angles. It's worse than tge one in the video, but at least it closes up nicely. And at least I learned to use sines and cossines correctly.

i don't get why there is so much math critics over here, listen to me ya all there is something called in phyiscs the common errors that is something that no matter how accurate we can get we won't ever be 100% accurate espacially when dealing with numbers for example the hour here at my country is 12:32 and if i checked my brother's phone it is 12:33 and my mother's phone is 12:30 now can someone explains to me why does that happen ??? although the seconds periods is designed equally in the three phones there still some glitches, maybe they are the same brand and the same model yet still no conclusion what is going on and we cannot decide which time is the completely 100% accurate yet it is not a big deal cause minute higher minute lower ain't that big of a deal especially when don't have any full 100% accurate methods which by it we can measure the time, another example the approxmation ratio which can includes that when you have number like 5.8777163536...we don't have time to write all of this shit but we can easily take a few three numbers from after the decimal and conclude it as the full number so the final would be 5.877 although this number is not equal to this number above the math laws consider it acceptable as in the Pi value we all now that pi equals 3.14159265359 but we only write it 3.14 and nobody complains about that and many mathematical problems uses 3.14 specifically not even 22/7 in order to solve the equations and the answer becomes this moment 100% accurate and there is also something you never asked yourselves when you were solving math limits problems which was when x was tending to 2 for example we write it 2 while it is better be known that the x wasnot actually 2 but it it was 1.99999999999999999..... still we called this x 2 and nobody asked why this because there is something called tolernce which is involved in dealing with decimals same problem you cannot just say somebody drawing a polygon wrong cause ✌decimals✌ we don't live in a perfect world we don't have perfect measurments we don't have perfect pencils to make perfect geomtrical shapes so before you want a perfect mind in order to make a perfect geomtrical figures as you want your heptagon angle to be accurately 51.4285714286 nah nah and acting like professionals and with a perfect godamn minds supply me with the perfect tools you perfect people are dealing with the you rule the world with your perfectness p.s thank you aurthur this video is great for education fun and amusing keep up with the good work and don't listen to anyone.

Y'all judging this video saying it isn't a perfect heptagon should make a video showing us how *easy* it is to draw a *perfect heptagon with a ruler and compass* . Seriously do it and I'll STFU. Geometric theory can prove perfection in numbers, but it won't show you how to do something in a practical way. This video demonstrates how to be accurate (not perfect) and practical at the same time. I'm not gonna spend 12 fucking hours drawing a heptagon just because I want it perfect.
