I think this linear "style" versus a realistic rendered one adds a certain animated look, rather than "cartoon-ish". It looks more alive somehow in my eyes, and you can feel the personality of the artist and sitter coming through the drawing.
@ProkoTV5 жыл бұрын
I agree. It also makes me want to play around with a stylized shading look. Shading doesn't have to be photo realistic.
@neonscorpion29815 жыл бұрын
@@ProkoTV I also think its appealing because it sort of smooths out some of the detail and 'imperfections'. It feels like looking at a perfected idea of the subject. It still captures the feature and detail to a point, but it's almost like looking at the 'idea' of the subject rather than just a 'photograph'. You can add slightly larger prominent traits and also slightly bend the rules to allow more character to come through. Not quite like a characature does, where its overblown almost for a sense of humor, these are done in a respectable appreciation for the things that make the subject unique. I think that's why they are appealing to me. :)
@Sheyth_Rise5 жыл бұрын
Its good for fast sketching and at least looks realistic good for time but realistic shading cool if you have time but its hard to erase later but the linear easily erasable
@ryanclouse2995 жыл бұрын
Not sure I agree on the last statement. A realistically rendered drawing can have a lot of character, and a line drawing can lack some. I think character is more dependent on the artist. Saying that, there is a lot of character in these portraits. :)

I think the simplest answer to why caricatures are appealing is that if done well, the exaggerations emphasize the individual’s unique physical features (hopefully in a flattering way) while at the same time capture their charm. They say a photo can speak a 1000 words, but I say a good caricature only needs to speak one: “perfect!”

One of the things you said at the end was so critical about the Pupil-Teacher relationship when it comes to art. "I didn't even realize I was making those decisions." It is because of that, that unconscious choice, that makes teaching art so hard and makes learning art hard as well. No experienced artist can tell you why they do all the things they do, why they make each decision. That's why you cannot watch a master work and become a master yourself. You must experience it to learn it. You must learn your own mistakes.

The style is nice and clear. I like the angular nature and the restrained hatching, and I think you achieved a good stylized likeness (of both yourself and Marshall). Also you did a good job of keeping the look of both portraits similar. You made a great observation about really learning how to do a photorealistic portrait before trying to stylize. For so many years I had such an unbalanced intuitive approach, and besides hindering consistency, I think that puts unneeded stress on yourself as an artist. I would like to know the total time you put into each piece. As a kid and being from the Nashville area, I would frequently visit Opryland where they employed a number of caricature artists. These guys took an 18 x 24 pad and a Sharpie, and in about 10-15 minutes made what was generally an unrecognizable likeness of the subject, by any stretch. Luckily for them the Nashville tourists were a pretty amiable bunch. It was a common device to connect the person to the portrait by including something related to their hobby, like a tennis racket. I think it would have been fun to work doing portraits there as a kid, but I didn't have the skills to produce a good likeness, at least not one that I could consistently look the customer in the eye and feel good about taking their money for. You'd think expensive private high-school art classes would have helped, but nope. Anyway, thanks for putting such amazingly great content out on your YT channels!

I've been pushing my style more in this direction. I think it's a convenience thing. I'm an architectural sketcher and interior designer so being able to sketch more linearly and drop a drawing in 30 minutes with a pen rather than 5-6 hours fully rendered out with watercolour or digital. I definitely wouldn't want to approach stylised drawings without having got up do a decent fidelity of realism beforehand.

Summary: "Design shapes without overthinking" - Don't let things become uniform, or boring. Match styles that inspire you, Good balance is from the confidence side - Talk to yourself - hahaha - Boost confidence - but not overboard Look at tonal values for line work - Dark, midtones, highlights, Make design elements -so that when you shrink the image, it still looks like a drawing - Make blocks - and put lines in it _ Let it stay linear, but keep away from realism, when sticking with the lines Start with Realism - and let stylization come after you can copy 1:1 :) Break rules in ways you haven't see other people do it - So it still looks good - and keep it up , try new combinations of this> Linear: indicate with plane of the head -line with the edge. Map out your areas you want to fill/line-up/use P.s. Your headshape was very accurate> Great Portrait AGAIN Proko :) Thanks for the advice, Do you use wacoms? I want to see you draw with a reference, and make it something 'new'

Some of my favorite drawings and paintings are the ones that lift the veil on the artists method where I can see and relate to the mark-making or brushstrokes. I think myself and others like this style because they can say, “I see what they did there,” and feel like they’re looking at both the result as a whole but also the rhythms and hand movements or the process that went into the work. With a rendering a person doesn’t get as much of that experience. They say “Wow that looks great,” but I don’t think they relate as much to the human touch that went into the piece.

I think people like stylized art because for the the most part, you can say every good artist has the ability to draw realistically. But taking that realism and drawing it with your own spin on it really creates a unique look that draws people like me into it. If everyone drew the same that can get quite boring. I think thats why elaborating on your own style is more appealing to artists.

Beautiful work, pleasing style. A possible project for you would be to do a single day's installment of a newspaper adventure strip (like Rip Kirby, for example). How would you go about it, how much effort would it take, what references would you use? Bear in mind that the artists had to churn out a 3 or 4-panel strip every day along with a Sunday page, though some had assistants (Al Capp had the likes of Frank Frazetta!). Just an idea you and/or your viewers might like. I love the artwork in some of those old strips.

Autobotprimo Yea no I (think?) I agree, hyper realism is great and all- but it relies on an extraordinary subject or interesting thematics. A recreation of a photo is impressive and all- but it just isn’t that *engaging* (unless you of course add themes, cool subjects, etc.) Adding some over exaggeration and flavor to create something that’s unique and tells a different story than simply a photo recreation is what gives art it’s incredible properties.
@ryanwayne47375 жыл бұрын
What I mean is, because we see the world hyper realistic all the time, we get used to it, and when you see a full on hyper realistic drawing it's kind of like meh because we see it all the time, therefore when we see a semi realistic drawing we are more interested in the concept because we don't see it in every day life

It's fascinating what went wrong with your self portrait ... to me, it's three things. Your face is essentially wide and soft; you made it tall and rough. And your nose is not a hook nose... despite your rendering matching its appearance in the picture. That dude who did your caricature back in 2018 didn't capture it either, in any of his three efforts! Your nose is an enigma. But really, when you started with that picture, I was thinking ... 'If I came across that pic outside of your website, I wouldn't even recognize it as being Stan Prokopenko'.
