Art competition? So the winner would be someone who incorporates what you talk about in your videos the best? I'd love if you hosted something like that and critiqued the submissions. I also like that you brought up storytelling and using reference. I'm at that point in my art where a change in mindset and the way I draw things seems to be the best way forward. I've been doing a lot of fan art as practice, but its been lacking something...I'll try incorporating more story into my work.

That's what i got from this video: You can't draw hands. They're difficult and complicated, so you oversimplify them or hide them. NO THATS BAD When something is opposing you, you should fight it. And that means that you will draw the hand the way you pictured it in your head, taking a minute or an hour, using references and tutorials, you won't give up and you will learn. Throughout my childhood, I was taught that I had to treat every artist that I looked up to as an enemy combatant. Art was an eternal competition, I could look up to artists, but it was for the purpose of someday surpassing them. This actually made me give up on art, because I'm not really a competitive person. I understand and enjoy conflict in world and character building, but people try to drag too much of it into everything else in life and there's literally no reward, no point to most of it.

Honestly I needed this. I'm in the study phase of a project, and I'm raking in so many hacks, tutorials, and references it feels like my head's going to melt. Staring at so much amazing art on places like art station, it can excite you but, more often, it just instills in me a sense of abject dread; fear that I can't even begin to rate, to even pass for decent; that my art is molten garbage and I shouldn't even bother, bc...it feels less like trying to entertain people and more like pissing in a crystaline lake. You feel like you're contaminating a space that's idyllic and finite; but, the truth is my struggle to create something valuable is valuable in and of itself. The art greats always know that, out there somewhere, there's someone even greater; and celebrate that fact, because how depressing would it be to see human creativity hit its peak and never go forward?

When I see an outstanding piece, the first thing that goes through my head is "So awesome, man, I'd never be able to achieve that" then I start observing details, imagine the process, understand how I can use that piece as a reference of the level of execution I want to achieve on my own pieces so it becomes an inspiration rather than a deterrent, challenging yourself to be better. You'd get results just by the sheer fact that you're kicking yourself to upgrade, that will show on your personal pieces and nobody will realize that the initial spark came from another piece unless you copy meticulously someone's style. (So what? There are countless of artists that draw in very codified and stylized genre. What stands out is their subjects/framing/color palette/mood)

I think this is kind of a masculine way of trying to improve art, that isn't to say it's bad it will definitely help a lot of people, but a lot of artists aren't competitive, a lot of artists don't find these sorts of challenges fun and are more personally influenced by their quality of work and will need different advice to help them improve. For those of us who are overwhelmed and are trying to become self satisfied there are also other emotional ways of personal growth and improvement. Through it relies more on self care, and self consideration. A realistic understanding that you, as you are are not a bad artist. That on the internet you are exposed to a lot of extremely skilled artists and that you are improving and paving your way. This advice might be actively a little harmful if you have depression or anxiety so keep that in mind as you move forward if you felt it a bit daunting. This is coming from someone who ended up with an RSI injury by pushing myself to far, that took months to recover from. Be kinder to your body and yourself rather competition motivates you or otherwise. Goodluck to those of you who don't improve that way and thanks for the video.
@MissyMona5 жыл бұрын
@@EthanBecker70 Not really sure what your comment is actually implying but with that said for those wondering RSI stands for repetitive strain injury. It's common in art professions and if you push yourself thoughtlessly it can become a life long inpairment, which can ruin ones art career in an instant, pushing past the pain can damage it to the point that you will have to quit your career. Animators and those in the 3D industry are especially suspectable and many contractors don't cover the costs of recovery. The more you know.
@oliviaj90375 жыл бұрын
Almost all the good artists I've met are competitive in some way, i find the ones who aren't generally work to a lower standard, they just don't care as much, it's just a hobby, they don't treat it like their life and passion and business. If you don't want to compete or pave a path w art it's fine to do that tho. And ofc never push ur self so far you get an injury. I think the message was just for artists who want to give it their all, and need a shift in mindset so they're not blaming themselves or others as much.
@MissyMona5 жыл бұрын
@@oliviaj9037 To be honest, I think it's a more complicated conversation then we could really get into,or speculate on in regards to hobbyists, professionals and artists who work on personal projects. The important thing to remember is we shouldn't generalize artists based off what we think is the winning mindset or pace. What works for him might work for another but also might not. There's multiple ways of leveling up and improving and just like how young artists make the mistake of not being willing to use reference for fear of "cheating" treating improvement as a linear thing that requires pushing forward for some younger folks might be discomfort, emotion or physical. Because associating strain as a form of whining is exactly the sort of language he used. Someone isn't a," whiny polly pocket barbie baby having their hand held" just because this might not work for them or they're uncomfortable and the thing that this can lead to is some unintentional pain or injuries in young artists. Thanks for your insight it's been nice having a conversation about this.

@dightxiii85785 жыл бұрын
You'll be able to draw other things than frontal view if you push yourself to learning all the core aspects of drawing from a deeper level, it'll take a lot of time, but it can be more than worth it. Make sure to get enough sleep and to use your time wisely, 6 hours of poorly used practise time is worse than 25 minutes of pure concentrated learning draw from life, study anatomy, study perspective from real life with inanimate objects first before moving onto things which are animate if possible one of the most common reasons for having off proportions when drawings from a reference is drawing what you think you see and not what you *actually see*, you need to detach yourself from defaulting to how you think things look, because you're brain is looking for shortcuts and is grasping for symbols to use that's just my two cents though

The Dark Souls comparison makes so much sense. When I first started playing Elden Ring, I was dying repeatedly to just imps in a cave. Like 3 imps. And it SUCKED. But I figured out their attack patterns, how to bait them, then finally got to the Burial Watchdog Boss and died some more. I got a little frustrated sure, but never angry to the point that I wanted to give up. I just kept trying and got a little better at timing, a little better at dodging, et cetera. And when I finally beat that easy peasy lemon squeazy baby boss, I was so amped up I wanted to fight EVERYTHING. And promptly had my face smashed into some mud by Tree Sentinel- But yeah, why CAN'T I approach my art the same way? I can and I will.
