I know you’ve got years of experience, but CLSI standards change. We now anchor with only the thumb, rather than C-shape, to prevent needle sticks. The way you shook the tubes is also improper inversion and can cause hemolysis in the sample, which directly affects lab values and in turn, quality of care. I see that you applied pressure to the gauze while it was on top of the needle. That can be extremely dangerous for both you and the patient. Safety is paramount, and my mentioning these standards is not just nit-picky. Patients rely on accurate test results and phlebotomists are their last line of defense in preventing pre-analytical errors.

When removing the needle, how should the person work with the gauze?
@cneer17
@cneer17 7 ай бұрын
@@Cindy99765 one should hover the folded gauze over the insertion site without pressure. Also the retractable needle safety device is activated while the needle is still in, so we don’t put ourselves (& patients) at unnecessary risk for needle-sticks by manually pulling the needle out

That’s not how you retract those needles. You need to hold down the left wing and squeeze the bottom and pull. Doing it the way you did is dangerous. Also don’t wrap the tubing all around your hand, that’s another needle stick possibility.

Adding to other commenters: the tourniquet was firstly slapped down on top of the gauze that would eventually be used on the insertion site, potentially introducing bacteria onto the gauze that could end up in the insertion site (which is an open wound, however small). And the tourniquet was placed too early; you should disinfect the insertion site, let it dry, and *then* put the tourniquet on. We should seek to minimize the length of time the tourniquet is tied.
@elainelaboy6369
@elainelaboy6369 Күн бұрын
Actually it's not too early. As you see palpate to find the vein. She has 60 seconds. So she is good. She had everything ready, otherwise she would have to take the turnicate off , then put on again.

funny story from when i was like 7 or 8 I have to get my blood done every year (high risk for diabetes). I also hate needles. Well I was NOT having it that day. Screaming, crying, and refusing to give the poor woman my hand (the arm hurts too much for me). My dad was trying to get me to calm down and hold still, and it didn't work. My mom happened to work at that same hospital, and she came in to hold my wrists down. I ended up kicking as hard as I could, and ended up making her slide out of her shoes. Apparently I traumatized the poor woman who was trying to get my blood and I feel so bad 🥲 (Cherry on top: Some 60 something year old woman had the audacity to mock me as I was going out the door after, and my dad almost yelled at her.) (I have to get my blood done tomorrow morning, watching these to desensitize myself before hand 🫡)

@@theassessmentclinic The current standard is to not put any fingers in the vector/path of the needle insertion because of the fingerstick risk. However "good" or "experienced" you think you are, you're only "good" until a fingerstick happens. I hope for everyone's sake that it does not. Please work on not being defensive with people's well-meaning comments. I and others here are also health care professionals and we're commenting from a place of concern, so when we see techniques we now know we have a safer alternative method for, we feel duty-bound to get that safer technique out there.

You are incorrect! There is no way you can tell how long I had the tourniquet on as this is a video that has been edited! Secondly, the max you can leave it on us for 2 minutes which this no where near! Thank you anyway for your response but please be wise and ask before assuming.
