Thank you, thank you, thank you, new to pastels and art in general have done a few acrylic paintings and played with the amazing Bob Ross for a while but all scenic rather than animals etc. Just put an owl down on some Pastelmat and who would have thought to put purple under a barn owls white face. Learning so much in this tutorial. Subscribed now, looking at some Derwent Pencils too, Currently use CarbOthello

As for pastel pencils, I use many different brands, sometimes this depends on the pigment softness and sometimes it’s literally based on a certain colour I want to use. I’m glad to hear that you’re currently using Carbothello pencils - a wonderful brand. This is actually the brand of pencil that I would suggest purchasing if new to this medium, as the colour range is great and the medium softness is spot on for use with Pastelmat paper. If you purchase any of the Derwent pastel pencils you’ll notice that they have a softer core, which is great for larger areas and where more soft blending is required, but it can be a little trickier to get fine details if working on a smaller scale. You can clean/sharpen blending stumps on sandpaper. It will bring the point back and still keep the edges soft.
