I cannot express how brilliant you're narrative, detailed explanations and mini tutorials are. You (I'm guessing) help A LOT of people who maybe just want the basics and cannot fork out a lot of money. You speak of the things that are big problems for some of us but nobody ever mentions them. A big thank you from all of us who just want to be creative! We love you Sycra

this was an amazing tutorial, I was basically falling for all the mistakes you listed for practicing, and your method makes so much more sense

I've been searching for a tutorial that will give me the framework to develop skills that I know I have, this is it. Proportion and getting started has always been an issue for me, which is why I never persisted with drawing. This has given me the incentive to practise on a daily basis. Thanks Sycra

I'm glad, i'm not one of the only ones who believes, in using creativity, and imagination to create something. Rather than drawing it photo-realistically.
@wewk58411 жыл бұрын
Im glad you do still show reference drawing. Its the foundation required to advance to drawing from memory.
@MoogieSRO9 жыл бұрын
In this video, you mention people who get really good at copying photos, and not being impressed by that. This is something I've noticed with my art, when I do a speedpaint study from a photo and I receive praise for how 'good' it looks. But it's the _reference_ that looks good. If my copy looks similar, then all that means is I've picked accurate values and shapes. It's fine practice for me as a beginner, but it's not at all indicitive of what I can draw from imagination (which is very little). I suppose it's nice to receive praise though regardless, it keeps the motivation up. :P
@aprilblenk8 жыл бұрын
I do find coping helps in some ways though with developing your imagination. I don't think everyone would agree but for me personally, when I copy an image, I always notice how different the copy looks compared to how I would normally draw without a reference. For instance, I might notice that the neck is a lot wider than I imagined or that eyes in real life are smaller than how I would normally draw them and by doing that, I'm basically leaving little tips for myself for when I draw next time without an image. Of course, as Sycra said, you don't ALWAYS have to follow every single rule when it comes to proportions but it sure does help to have a basic understanding of how the body looks before you just start going off and drawing EVERYTHING incorrectly, you know?
@spaceybeatz78248 жыл бұрын
yes its a great skill. you mastered patience, line accuracy, proportion, and texture
@JadyLester8 жыл бұрын
aprilblenk Yes, studying an image makes me want to draw more using methods I've learned in the process, but I have been stuck in a reference rutmyself for a long time. drawing from imagination is like a whole other muscle set.
@GruntGeneral8087 жыл бұрын
I'm the opposite, I used to only draw strictly from imagination and not even glimpsing at any reference. It worked well for made up objects, but i had no idea what real objects, like the hind leg of a dog, looked like. I need to draw from reference more in order to know what things actually look like.

I really like how you explain the artistic process. You put into words something that comes naturally to those who have done it so long, so that those who are struggling with it and/or are inexperienced can have a better understanding of the way art is formed/created. I especially liked the point you made about how it's not magic but just a lot of simple things done quickly due to practice. Very well said. I'm sure this will help give a lot of people thinking they can't be skilled at art a bit more hope and now some very good tips on how to train your eye on proportions etc.

I wish your videos were around before I went to college. One of the things I love about your teaching method, is that you show the wrong ways that a lot of people draw with. I was stuck for the longest time with a lot of these issues myself, and none of my animation teachers would really show what we were doing wrong. Just draw the right anatomy over our pictures with a red pencil, then walk away...

you got me there sycra, as i currently draw realistic portraits but i am now trying to learn to 'create' for myself, and have to agree because copying really doesnt have all the benefits of becoming an artist, though photo realistic painting/drawing has been done way back . it dtill covers the fundsmentals of anatomy and proportion, and it helps you understand them realistically and that in my opinion is a great training ground for drawing figures

I love your channel! I teach art myself, and lot of the methods for basic sketching I've come up with, are very similar to yours! Makes me feel fuzzy. You've also renewed my own urge to improve, I'm doing the iteration thing (,that I saw in another video,) now myself too. I was looking for a way to put this into a solid idea (all that need for mileage and etc, that I ws trying to convey to my students with something like "you gotta do these simple things over and over until they're in the muscle memory!") and you helped me so much with that, specially tying it together with the analytical tendencies to learn a thing and move on. So big thanks!

I recommend 'the drawing scrpit' just give it a Google, same thing as PM but it uses photos of actual people with timers. Another good one is the Figure & Gesture drawing tool at pixelovely, it also has an option to do a class which build up the time intervals from 30 seconds to up to over an hour if you do a long class.

you're right, there's not much in posemaniacs dynamic poses, but serves well to learn quickly identify core muscles and body proportions, did not speak much to draw for animation, but I think the basis of a good picture is a good proportion , after the dynamism, both are for each other :)

NIce touch about your own opinions upfront . I am self taught and refused to accept a grant to Cooper Union EXACTLY for the reasons you give "Okey nice copy.... and?" I always drew VERY loosely sometimes not even looking at the paper but the model and turn the page into a mess. Giving myself challenges of finishing a piece without lifting the pencil once. My trick came when I felt the mess had the components right I'd squint and see the line drawing as it should be & darken that. MY style. :)

also PM is especially not good if you want to work on gesture drawing. Best way to learn that is to go out for a few hours every week(maybe every day or every other day) and draw people. Get a tiny little notepad and just sketch people you find interesting. At first you'll only be able to handle doing basic stick figures but eventually you'll be able to feel the rhythm of the human figure. And even later you'll be able to flesh it out into a full drawing. It takes practice but it's worth it.
