IN THIS EPISODE: Drawing Mickey Mouse is a very difficult task. But it is just circles and putting them together in the right order. His design has changed over these 96 years, and there are many eras to chose from when drawing him. Not too many people draw the early versions from 1928 to 1932. The one most people find very appealing is the version from 1938 to 1948 as the animators found ways to streamline his design and squash and stretch his head and body. The animators back then I think said he more like plastic at that point. Look at Mickey’s first design, then look at what he became in later years. The designs I’m showing here were done by or inspired by, Fred Moore, one of the Mickey experts at the studio. He brought a certain look to characters he designed and animated, like Mickey. Before Fred Moore, Mickey was drawn by tracing the outline of a quarter for his head, and keeping it very stiff. After Fred, Mickey became very flexible with lots of squash and stretch. He brought a lot of appeal to his character designs and animation. The present design that is being used now is very different. Character design history is a very interesting subject. I would always ask on a new show who was the designer. Find out who did it, what were their influences, what was the assignment from the creators of the show. Well, enough of that, get to drawing Mickey Mouse!

Awesome! I was just studying some Mickey animation yesterday. There is a scene from Brave Little Tailor(1938) drawn by Frank Thomas that is absolutely brilliant.

The Brave Little Tailor is an amazing short. I saw it as a comic book story before I saw the film version. The comic story is really well drawn. I did not see very many Mickey Mouse shorts before I got into the animation field. When the first MM VHS came out in the early 80s, I bought it, and was so impressed. The shots in Brave Little Tailor by the various animators are great. Bill Tytla, the greatest Disney animator was responsible for animating the giant, and no one ever animated a giant better than this. To see the drawings of his is look at how to draw a character of scale with actual weight and bulk. I think Frank Thomas did a scene where MM walks out of the castle and looks back and says "Be seein' you, I hope?" I think that's his scene. A great short film to study, as a whole and scene by scene, frame by frame. Glad you liked my video, nd thanks for sending a comment....

Great idea! I have an Oswald model sheet in one of the Disney books.... Back in those days, most of the characters looked the same, just different ears. So Oswald the rabbit looked like Foxy the Fox, and the cat character at another studio. Is Oswald gaining in popularity these days? Anyway, thanks for watching, and thanks for commenting...

Great suggestion! What animal is it? A trick I learned from Ben Washam, was to draw a circle, divide it up into how many steps you character is taking as it walks or runs around in the circle, then tilt the circle, and there will be your steps for the guy walking around. There are some old WB and MGM and Disney cartoons with this action that you can study before I get to showing this lesson, and you can stop frame the action to see how they handled it. Thanks for watching, and thanks for the comment....
