00:00 James Dean Style Introduction
James Dean was the quintessential Hollywood bad-boy of the 1950s. Best remembered for his star-making turn as disaffected outcast Jim Stark in the 1955 film, Rebel Without a Cause.
00:49 A Brief Biography
02:42 James Dean's Films: East of Eden
03:44 Rebel Without a Cause
04:31 Giant
05:10 Unrealized Projects & Auto Racing
06:12 The Death of James Dean
07:15 James Dean's Legacy
08:05 James Dean's Signature Style
Dean was a studious and accomplished method actor, but perhaps more than his talent, it’s his natural charisma, as an avatar for rebellious youth, that shines through today. He didn’t abide by Hollywood standards of the time, preferring to live by his own rules.
Many of the biggest male movie stars of the 1950s, such as Humphrey Bogart, Gary Cooper, or Cary Grant, were of the previous generation and represented “old Hollywood” with their side-parted hairstyles and tailored suits.
How To Incorporate James Dean's Style Into Your Wardrobe
10:00 Harrington Windbreaker
10:53 Jeans
11.59 T-Shirt
12:46 Boots
13:48 Polo Shirt
14:29 Sweaters
15:34 Breton Shirt
16:19 Sunglasses & Eyeglasses
17:10 Hairstyle
While the word “icon” has become especially overused in recent decades, it’s undeniable that the term suits James Dean-whether it’s because of his genuine talent as an actor, or the fact that his death at 24 left him frozen in time in the minds of the movie-going public. The combination of his rebellious characters and his casual style was a perfect storm for inspiration.
His style has a largely timeless quality, featuring simple pieces rooted in their functionality and versatility. Watch any of his films or peruse a few photos, and his confidence and cool shine through. Do you have a favorite James Dean performance or wardrobe item? Share with us in the comments.

Dean wasn't my main clothing style influence as a teen, but his hair style certainly was. I used to walk into my hair dressers and simply ask for the James Dean and he knew exactly what to do.

Thanks for this beautifully done history of James Dean. I was 18 and a HS Senior in 1956. He set the style for impressing girls and when he was gone, we sorely missed him. We are the "Elvis Generation". Elvis had only his hair as a trademark so we KNEW how to dress. It was exactly like James Dean in our favorite movie "Rebel Without A Cause". (We never called him "Jimmy"). Hair long and pushed straight back - a lot of us threw in a mild "duck-tail". As you show so nicely in your video, we wore Black Engineer Boots, (or often black Jodhpur or Chelsea Ankle Boots or Penny Loafers and white socks); Levi's (beltless), White T-shirt, and a light-weight Jacket of the type he wore in the movie. A black Leather Biker Jacket worked with the same outfit in winter. It was amazing how many boys in my High School dressed alike - many of us still wear some modified version of that outfit these many years later. I still have two recent versions of that style Leather Jacket. And I still wear three-eyelet Desert Boots in Suede, black or brown, depending on outfit colors. It Was/Is the dangerous look - the opposite of the 'other' HS style - the nerdy Collegiate look of Khaki Slacks with the buckle in the back, brown Loafers (or black and White Saddle Shoes), and Madras shirts. Ugh. HAAA! Thanks again for this video. It is a keeper and goes into my Video library. Cheers.

That’s a really cool story man! I found that look in high school as well, though I’m plenty younger than you and still rock it, altough not as aggressively as when I was young but still wear my engineer boots, Levis and leather jacket everyday! There are very few styles, especially such that has been this trendy that has the staying power of the 50s rebel, a look really ingrained in the western world. Sorry about my english, I’m not a native speaker.

@@dennisnordlund902 Dennis, thanks for the really cool note. Lately, I have replaced the beltless Levi's look with a more military style, but with the same shirt and accessories. Now, with either black Cargo pants or black or Khaki Chino pants. When it's warm, I wear some message/black T-shirts in place of plain white. I admit to sticking to the "man in black" look. Nice to hear from another person who still wears that rebel look. Cheers.

Lol Very interesting. I am a little younger than you, but my husband who grew up in a large dairy ranch in the northwest, idolized Buddy Holly. He wore jeans rolled up, black pointed ankle boots and a thin black belt. Black glasses 🤓and a pompadour. Yuck. 😖 I wouldn’t have looked at him twice in 1966. I was into the Beatles and Tony Bennett, being a classical pianist and a light opera/jazz singer. Life is absolutely absurd, at the least, ironic. 😊👍🏼👍🏼🕊

@@christinalw19 Christina, yes, Buddy Holly was very much in our purview along with Elvis, Gene Vincent, Jerry Lee Lewis and then there was Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Vic Damone and others for Pop music. I have to say, Buddy Holly was the anti-James Dean look. The girls loved Elvis but he didn't develop his style until Las Vegas and nobody dressed like that - a cape? Nope. Tony Bennett is still making singing appearances . . . . WOW! Of course, I still drive a black Trans Am, so a bit of cool is still around. Cheers.

It's amazing to me that a few of Dean's style trademarks are still our standard. Natural fibers...Cotton, Wool, Cashmere. Leather footwear...boots or shoes. What we will never know is how he would have looked and dressed in his later years. We can all do our best. But, he'll always look better. We lost him at such a young age.

I was born in 1960, and was a teenager in Chicago. During that time, the north side of the city was heavily populated with greaser gangs. This made the jeans and T-shirt look align one with those gangs. They were strongly influenced by the characters in West Side Story, as well as the rebel look exemplified in Marlon Brando and James Dean. For kids he didn't want to be associated with gangs, this look was not popular. In my twenties, this look was completely out of fashion (think early 80s) and off my radar. Now, in my sixties, modeling James Dean would be silly, but that doesn't mean I don't wear jeans, Harrington jackets, and boots. But never Tees as outerwear. Never. As far as Dean as an actor, I was very impressed with the job he did in those three roles, and would love to have seen his career path had he outlived his youth.

"don't get a t shirt that you get from Walmart or target" You don't need an expensive designer shirt to look like him. I buy those Hanes comfortsoft tagless shirts that come in packs at Ross, throw it in the wash to shrink a bit and I still get the same fitted look James Dean had, looks just like his. It depends on the brand. I only buy Hanes Comfortsoft tagless shirts for t shirts now.

James Dean and Rudolph Valentino are the two greatest of all times. Their personal styles are 100% timeless.

I love this expansion beyond classics that can look really out of place today in streetwear. I love suits and especially big wool overcoats but it's pretty far off what's in style now.

You should cover Elvis Presley’s style as well, his use of classic menswear in the 1950’s and ‘60’s is underrated.

I haven't seen any of James Dean's movies, but I did see a Streetcar named desire, that has been influential on me too for similar reasons haha
