Have just clocked up just under 600,000km driving buses since 1981. That is a bit under 14,000 km per annum on average. Should get to that figure by March 2025. Started on Minibuses, then 22 seaters, and for the last seven years 34 to 51 seaters, all MAN’s with auto gear boxes. My 51 seater MAN has a Voith three stage auto, which is very smooth changing. It is a dual door SLF 3-axle model and can have 26 standees, but we use it for short metro charters and cruise ship shuttles, so only seated passengers. Really enjoy your bus videos, keep up the good work.

Happy days! I started out in my blue overalls at Miller Street Birmingham. Just after I started, they tore off the lovely Birminham city coat of arms and stuck on, WMPTE. We had a mix of fleetlines and old half-cab Daimlers and Guys with Wilson pre-select gearboxes. One lesson that hurt was when helping the fitter adjust brake bands. I was in the cab on the pedal while he shouted which gear to select. I didn't press the pedal hard enough and it shot right out of the floor trapping my little leg under the steering wheel. The fitter had to climb on me in the cab and push the pedal back down. Owwww😢

I remember going into town on buses like that in the 70s-80s. When I heard the sound it took me right back. I can still picture the square tickets with the half circle cut out at the top strewn over the floor and fag ends upstairs. Oh, and if you sat at the front upstairs, when the bus went around a corner there would be a ball bearing run through the hollow handrail.

@robertp.wainman40945 ай бұрын
A good driver (which I'm sure your father was!) can make the smoothest changes possible with the pneumocyclic semi-automatic gearchange......but a bad driver can make the bus - and the passengers literally jump up and down!

I wish you could have explained the gear shift mechanism. I remember the same gear selector on Bristols and that was a pre-selector so you could just whack through the gears and each time you lifted off it would engage the next gear. Similarly on the Leyland Nationals I remember drivers just keeping their foot flat to the floor while shifiting and you would get a rev-out while it passed through neutral. So I am not sure what sort of gear set up this is where you have to match revs on the shifting in what appears to be a semi-auto.
@kristinajendesen71115 ай бұрын
Get someone to let you have a good, long drive of the best bus ever Fuzz, a Routemaster. We used to start in auto 2nd (which is the same position as 4th), push the gear lever to 3rd when it changed up, get the most out of that then pull it back to 4th. Leaving it in auto only it would change into top too early. Of course with the wheels up front, point them around the corner and the rest would follow without having to worry about the overhang.
